Quilted or wax Barbour jacket?

I’m looking for a navy Barbour jacket and torn between a traditional wax style, and a quilted version? The quilted one is obv going to be warmer but should I go for the more classic Barbour style? I’m looking at the more modern cuts (boxier/shorter) rather than the very traditional ones if that makes any different. Anyone who has one - any thoughts? Thanks!

I only own quilted jackets and find them really hood in the rain and good for autumn weather and also spring weather.

If you can, I would go to a Barbour shop and try before you buy. DH has set his heart on a specific quilted one, when he tried it on it looked awful around the neck and collar, he chose a different style that he hadn’t seen before. They are all cut differently and feel different.

John Lewis sell Barbour

Thanks - good shout, there’s actually both a Barbour and a John Lewis near me. Also keen to hear from anyone who owns one about how much wear they get from it/if they own a quilted and a wax jacket which is more versatile!

I have four waxed cotten Barbour jackets, I just love them and with the different styles they are my go-to coat and get worn all the time.

Agree about trying before you buy, the sizing can be quite snug but when you have the right one it will be perfect.
OH has two and one was sent back to Barbour to have the sleeves lengthened (at a very reasonable cost).

If it has a thermal lining it will be very warm (sometimes too warm) whereas just a cotten lining will allow you to wear it all year around.

My Wax jacket gets lots of wear. It’s warm and almost looks better as it ages. I like the slightly battered look 😂

Personally I prefer waxed, they just feel nicer when on. Better quality somehow.

Thank you everyone! Really helpful 🙏

I think waxed it is. I’ll go for one that has a bit of room for layers, sounds like it’ll be more versatile than a quilted one as it should be good for spring/autumn without layers and winter with some layers. Going to go to the Barbour store at the weekend!

I have both! I suppose the waxed is more practical but the quilted one looks so nice and has a soft fleecy lining!

You can get padded liners to zip into many of the wax jacket styles to make them warmer for winter. With a hood, that's basically what I wear from October to April! The wax jackets are really waterproof too.

Definitely go to an actually shop/supplier to try on. I find they come up very small!
