Hi all,

Not your typical wedding guest dress, but I don't really do long flowery numbers. Just wondering if this one looks ok? I could style it up with statement shoes/bag.

Thanks all. :)

What kind of wedding?

KateDelRick · 19/08/2024 11:31

I personally don't think you should wear black to weddings because it's the colour of mourning, but of course people will come on here and vehemently disagree.
What accessories?

natalienewname · 19/08/2024 11:34

Depends on the wedding: Fashionable young things in a cool city venue, absolutely perfect.

Sedate country church with vintage mismatched crockery and handwritten chalkboard signs, I think you’d perhaps feel a little out of place.

IggyAce · 19/08/2024 11:35

It’s a lovely dress but it’s give me funeral vibes. It could work for a wedding with a pop of colour.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 19/08/2024 11:35

I’ve seen teens at weddings this year in similar, but pastel colours.

I think the colour, length and shape make it more suited to a night out than a wedding.

SuncreamAndIceCream · 19/08/2024 11:37

I wore black to a Halloween themed wedding. If it's not a similar event I would find something else.

Megifer · 19/08/2024 11:37

That's gorgeous op where is it from?

I'd wear it to a wedding with my DMs and chunky silver jewellery

MN generally is still very old fashioned when it comes to wedding guest attire tbh 😬

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/08/2024 11:37

I think that's more of a dress for an event where you're standing up most of the time.

I personally would never wear black to a wedding, but I also think it's just too short. I'd be worried about flashing my knickers during the ceremony.

I think there's quite a lot of middle ground between long and flowery and that one!

(I actually do like it, just not for a wedding.)

Doughnutforme762829 · 19/08/2024 11:38

I would style it up with say pink shoes and large pink bag for colour. It's at an old chapel in northumberland. :)

Traditionally black is for funerals not weddings.

If there's going to be lots of English people there then I wouldn't.

MargotEmin · 19/08/2024 11:43

Ooh that's gorgeous, I'd love it if you wore that to my wedding.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 19/08/2024 11:44

Old chapel in Northumberland - possibly not black. Same dress in dark blue would be ok.

also you might be sitting for a long time on an uncomfortable bench. It might end up all scrunched at the back and looking a bit rubbish.

MargotEmin · 19/08/2024 11:44

MargotEmin · 19/08/2024 11:43

Ooh that's gorgeous, I'd love it if you wore that to my wedding.

I wouldn't 'style it up' though, its sculptural shape is the main event.

lovelyhat · 19/08/2024 11:46

I don’t like black or mini for weddings so it’s a no from me.

DancingNotDrowning · 19/08/2024 11:46

Lovely dress but it’s evening wear imo, so fine if it a black tie affair (provided long dress hasn’t been specified) but not a day time event.

Megifer · 19/08/2024 11:47

Just one of about 50 links I've just seen saying black now considered fine (as long as no other dress code etc)

Pink shoes/bag sounds good for some colour 😃

I went to a couple of weddings last year, lots of black, reds and <gasp> greens!

An old chapel in Northumberland may be a bit chilly as well.

AncientBallerina · 19/08/2024 11:48

No it’s not suitable for a church wedding. It’s more of a cute dress you’d wear to a party. Or a chic London registry office wedding as above. I wouldn’t wear black or a dress that short to a church wedding. Etiquette exists for a reason.

KateDelRick · 19/08/2024 11:49

Well, some stylists may consider it "fine", but many people would still say no. However, I would judge the type of event, and what you're suggesting is probably no.

AncientBallerina · 19/08/2024 11:49

Red and green are fine obviously - black especially in a church is associated with mourning.

Ridley4 · 19/08/2024 11:49

Too short for a church wedding but a lovely dress

Nanana1 · 19/08/2024 11:51

Black is fine for a wedding but that style looks a little cheap. If you like it though go for it.

I love it too. Totally get people thinking it's too short, but it's not really when it's on.

More people are wearing black to weddings these days I've found!

I think it's lovely!

I would do statement shoes bag and earrings. Nothing in the hair.

Noooo red and green on MN is an absolute no no usually. I also remember vaguely years ago it was a no no generally (remember my gran getting hives when i showed off an emerald green dress i got for my cousins wedding, bad luck apparently!) so the fact you think red and green is now "obviously" ok surely shows times have moved on a little?

Red used to mean you'd been a mistress of the groom 😆
