My make up always looks shit

I really really want to get better at make up. Currently I cleanse, moisturise, primer, elf glow, foundation with a sponge, concealer, cream blusher, put this eyebrow tint stuff on with a little brunch and mascara. But it just looks crap. My coverage is rubbish, my eyelashes look shit no matter how much I curl them or what mascara I use. Help!!!!!

I love make up and am very practised at applying it. If yours is looking bad, perhaps try Lisa Eldridge on Youtube. She is very good at less is more. That might be your problem. And have you got the right products for you? I don't know what your budget is. Space NK is usually quite helpful but all their products are fairly expensive.

Maybe you are putting on too much glowy stuff, especially at this time of year when your face might sweat. I do recommend looking at videos though. What products do you use?

Try Nars Longer Radiant foundation. Apply with fingers and then use a damp sponge dabbed over it to even it out. It looks amazing and is fullproof.

Are you using a water based or silicone based foundation? You need the right primer for your foundation. I wouldn't bother with a primer, elf glow and then a foundation either, do a primer or the glow. Are you exfoliating at any point in your skincare routine?

My routine is cleanse, exfoliating toner, Olay super serum, eye cream and moisturiser. Then I use the elf power grip primer, foundation, cream contour, concealer, powder bronzer, cream blush and set with the Huda beauty loose powder. Then I do my eye shadow, brows and eyelashes and finally a good mist of the beauty crop glow milk setting spray. I use a damp beauty blender for all application too.

Good quality products and watching YouTube videos helped me or even try a beauty counter as a starting point.

DontBiteTheCat · 17/08/2024 16:36

Tubing mascara is a game changer. I got a KvD one in a beauty box and my lashes look incredible.

UnfriendMe · 17/08/2024 23:14

What exactly looks bad? Does the foundation look good? I always think no matter how good the eye makeup or anything else, if the foundation looks bad or cakey the whole look is just bad.

I recently started using this cushion pad foundation which is amazing. Full coverage and fool proof, if never looks cakey. It's also vegan and cruelty free which is a plus.

It’s the elf glow. It makes my face
look flaky with patchy coverage too.

I put makeup on the other night and it was so humid I had to use another foundation because the first one I chose just slipped and wouldn't stay on

I just patted my face with tissue and my second foundation went on a treat and stayed on

You have to leave 5-10 mins after applying moisturiser before adding foundation longer on a humid evening

I do have primer but don't really need it

I use Stay perfect foundation by Boots No 7 which I'm very happy with

I used high end foundations my whole life till I tried this and I like it m

ClipTap · 18/08/2024 04:43

The foundation that slipped was Boots No 7 Hydraluminous

Hucklemuckle · 18/08/2024 06:33

What do you mean by the coverage is rubbish?
Uneven?
Not enough coverage?
Cakey looking?
Patchy?

Can you describe the problem or even better add a photo. You can block out features if you want to stay anonymous. Just show the problem

as for lashes again what is the issue?
short?
sparse?
clumpy mascara?

Aquamarine1029 · 18/08/2024 06:42

I think you're using too many products and they probably don't work well together. I would stop using the Elf Glow for sure, and maybe even the primer. See how your foundation looks on its own.

Then I would def recommend a cushion foundation, they go on the best. The one I recommended is def my go to and do quick and easy.

TheKoalaWhoCould · 19/08/2024 06:42

@UnfriendMe Thanks, I already use one. I like the tirtir one from Korea - it’s fab! I was just explaining that the elf glow may be OP’s problem as it doesn’t work for everyone.

Summerhillsquare · 19/08/2024 07:16

It's the brunch. That stuff will never stick.

🤭

It doesn’t work for me either, it makes my foundation patchy.

Make up looks best on smooth, moisturised skin so exfoliate regularly.
A tip from a former air hostess was always eye make up first, then foundation.
I mix Fenty foundation with a little bit of serum and illuminator (glow?) then apply with a fan brush. This gives a more natural, light, glowy coverage; then Charlotte Tilbury contour wand under cheek bones. No blusher. I personally don't use a primer but spray on sunblock over make up.
