I'm looking to buy some collagen and have gone back over the Style and Beauty threads. A few names keep coming up. Please pick your favourite so I can decide!

I'm not thinking of Marine, Vegan or Halal, mainstream bovine collagen is what I'm looking at.

So: the ones mentioned:

Hunter & Gather got a LOT of mentions but also many negative comments on unpleasant taste so I've ruled them out.

Top contenders are:
Vital Proteins
Absolute Collagen
Ancient and Brave (lots of positive comments)
Willpowders (tasteless)

Others mentioned:
Dose & Co
Collagen Super dose
Weight world collagen
Beauty pie
Vida glow (someone said "good")
Zenii shine fusion

Thank you 😊

Do they actually work though? Is there any scientific evidence?

HolidayAtNight · 19/08/2024 21:02

Yes - there's a review article here which cites many other sources:
Beneficial effects of food supplements based on hydrolyzed collagen for skin care (Review) (spandidos-publications.com)

I've been taking it for about 6 months now and my nails and hair (including leg/underarm hair, annoyingly) grow much faster!

They all are high in protein but a tiny amount. Easier to take on the whole though unless your really into protein shakes in which case I suppose it wouldn't matter to much taste wise? The Terranova ones have other good stuff in them to help aid absorption and other bits so bonus. The other brands are probably good enough but spend more on marketing…

I dont have protein shakes, I cant stand that sort of thing.

I have to have high protein but cant eat volumes of food due to WLS, so we're advised to take protein supplements, usually as shakes etc but I cant stand those, or the protein waters as they have artificial sweetners in them (as do most shakes)

So I use the collagen powder as a halfway solution, its not a full protein, but I can put it in tea and coffee without tasting it too much, or the milk for my porridge . I also use the Alpha01 bone broth protein and put that in things like the water for rice or lentils.

However, although they say its tasteless, its not really, there is a taste and I would rather take capsules if I can get the protein benefits of 18g a day from it but if not, I'll stick with the powders

Physios specialising on osteoporosis recommend collagen for bone density issues too and preventing.

Can I ask which one you take? Sorry if you've already mentioned x

HolidayAtNight · 19/08/2024 21:54

@Existingbudhet Yes, I take Vital Proteins Unflavoured - about a teaspoon and a half in coffee each day! The amount it says to take on the tub is enormous and I read this article which says you can take 2.5-15g: How Much Collagen Should You Take a Day? Supplements (medicinenet.com) It works for me, anyway!

I take absolute collagen. Jsut mix with some hot water and a bit of juice (and I throw my liquid iron supplement in there too). It's not delicious but it's not awful and it's made a big difference to my skin, hair, nails and my joint pain .

backspace2 · 19/08/2024 22:03

I'm not in favour of these powders at all, I looked into it and most of the studies were paid for by the manufactures and the studies are all poor quality and don't control for other dietary sources of amino acids. The proteins in collagen powder are broken down into their basic amino's and aren't any better than any other form of protein. In fact too much protein in your diet prevents the body from performing autophagy which actually recycles your own proteins in the body and it well know for its antiaging benefits.

These collagen powders are made from what would have been waste materials and god knows what parts of the animals, there is also suspected risk of transmission of prion disease i.e. CJD or mad cow disease from gelatine which is basically what these powders are https://www.neurology.org/doi/10.1212/WNL.98.18_supplement.3654

The people who are selling these supplements are laughing all the way to the bank!

frecklejuice · 19/08/2024 22:03

I use Willpowders and it really is tasteless in a protein shake, I tried their shake though and it was 🤢

Moonshine5 · 19/08/2024 22:22

I saw a combined one (bovine and marine) on another thread. Heads up I have not used this product. I've screenshot the photo.

Jeez that's scary, surely companies like Ancient and Brave would put only good quality ingredients into their products?

DancingFerret · 19/08/2024 22:38

British Supplements marine collagen capsules are excellent, IMO.

Been taking Absolute Collagen almost a year now! I'm really impressed, I just gobble it straight from the sachet in the morning, not the best taste in the world but certainly not the worst! My hair is a trillion times better, my skin is good and my nails are stronger and longer. Biggest improvement for me is my hair.

kindletimeisfinetime · 20/08/2024 07:16

It's not mentioned here (which is worrying me!) but I started taking Feel collagen yesterday. Can't report back yet as to what it's like!!

NorthernDancer · 20/08/2024 07:21

Another vote for British Supplements

Existingbudhet · 20/08/2024 08:28

Can anyone elaborate on the safety of these products esp the bovine ones?

Delatron · 20/08/2024 10:14

Willpowders uses Swiss bovine as they have the highest welfare regulations in the world - cows are all grass fed.

The argument (which you may or may not agree with ) is that there is less regulation in the sea so marine collagen can potentially contain micro plastics etc.

ABirdsEyeView · 20/08/2024 10:45

I like that Willpowders really is tasteless. I put in in coffee with a teaspoon of keto powder, use a frother and it's like a cappuccino

GettingStuffed · 20/08/2024 11:25

You do know that there's no evidence that taking collagen actually works don't you.

I'm looking for something to help with sore joints, is there really anything proven to help?

Blondiebeachbabe · 20/08/2024 13:25

When I researched this, Vital Protein's had the highest dose.

I'm quite happy to go on the evidence I've collated myself ie my own hair, my own skin and my own nails!

OneHeartyCat · 21/08/2024 12:32

Since this thread I started taking ancient and brave- can’t taste at all in my morning coffee. Will report back results! Thanks for the OP
