Hair oil

My DS has long, fine, surfer-type hair, which he maintains by washing with standard supermarket shampoo and conditioner. Despite using conditioner, the ends are fairly dry and a couple of people have suggested that he would benefit from using hair oil to moisturise it.
I have no idea what hair oil is or how you might use it (my similar length hair is a different consistency and doesn't have this issue) - could anyone recommend a product and tell me what he needs to do to use it, please? Is it something you apply during washing and rinse off, or do you brush it in and leave it on, etc?

I’d try a better shampoo and conditioner first

Leave-in conditioner might be a good idea, think of it like moisturiser for your hair. You rake it through wet-but-not-dripping hair then I brush to distribute it evenly.

Moroccan Oil is good. So is Kerastace Elixir. Both pricey though. On my 5 year old I use the L’Oreal equivalent. Not that her ends are breaking but it makes it shiny and easier to comb through. When it’s damp I squirt some in to my hand and just run it through. Sometimes I use it on dry hair too.

I’d also buy better shampoo and conditioner rather than the supermarket brand.

Aveda dry hair oil is great I put it on after styling and again every night because we have air con at work.
