Have a look at the "About" page of this site

Checking in on the new thread, I've missed you all.

I read Glyndebourne and thought "Goodwood" so I was a bit confused at first. I love the sound of gores upon gores upon gores.

I am also Team NoFringe so I'm glad your stylist is so wise.

I'm also off to the spiritual home of this thread. Sadly we're only in Paris for one night, staying in Pigalle. Any recommendations gladly received.

I also have a wedding in the North of Italy next year. The bride is Italian so it's a proper Italian wedding as opposed to a destination wedding. I've heard that they tend to be on the dressy / glamorous side. Has anyone any advice?

botemp · 21/08/2024 16:29

👋Elle, what kind of recs are you in need of for Pigalle? Food, shopping, sights, all of the above? My main tip would be to pack a safe bag against pickpockets as there are a lot in that area and probably best not to wear any sort of flashy jewelry. The area just to the right of it where you wander into easily doesn't feel the safest. Avoid using the Anvers metro station if you can.

Northern Italy is more dressy than glamorous IME, south goes all out on the glam. But it is Italy so there's always a bit more flash to it than elsewhere. I'd be less concerned with my own outfit and more the rest of your party. Italian men are so impeccably dressed, even when casual and in scorching heat. It's not just the suit, it's the socks, the shoes, the cufflinks, the starch in the shirt, probably the underwear... And children can also be in a sort of Sunday best (seems to depend on the type of family, since it's a wedding with international guests I'd assume it won't be that super formal, but if a large church and a separate evening venue are involved I'd assume it would be formal formal with outfit changes involved). But don't go mad with the spending as the food will be delicious and plentiful so spilling on those darling little outfits for the DC are bound to happen.

I'll take all of the above in terms of recommendations. We have booked Le Pantruche and Aux 2k for food, but would welcome a good bakery or light breakfast option and and sights and shops. The plan is just to meander round a new area and soak it up.

We are not bringing the DC to Italy so that's one less thing to worry about. Interesting about the men's dress. We got married in the height of summer and MrElle still fits into the very light wool suit. He has a good selection of very nice shoes but the shirt, socks, cufflinks and pocketsquare (?) may need to be sharpened up. I have plenty of dressy options so I should be fine. I saw somewhere that dresses are full-length but maybe that's more in the south. I have a good midi option that I think will work.

botemp · 23/08/2024 11:44

There's a really nice boulangerie in the area, Mamiche, but it's gone a bit viral so you might need to wait in line. If you've got no patience, on the same street there's KB Caféshop which is a specialty coffee roasters so more coffee focused but they also have pastries and light breakfast options.

There's also Buvette Paris but that's more of a brunch type place. If you're there with the DC I suppose crepes at Cafe Breizh might be an option? There's also two good ice cream places, Une Glace à Paris and Glaces Glazed. Bulot Bulot is a nice seafood bar in case you need another lunch/dinner option.

In terms of sights, well, it's all a bit cliche, Sacre Coeur and Moulin Rouge/Rue Lepic being the main sights, you'll barely hear any French around you but it is pretty and the view from the Sacre Coeur is beautiful. For the rest, it is more of a residential area than people realise (and lots of steep hills so sensible footwear and supportive socks recommended). The cemetery is interesting though, if you enjoy that kind of thing.

For shops, there's a few surplus/outlet shops. There's a Maison Kitsune one close to KB Caféshop, brands like Maje, Sandro, etc. also available. The only one I bother making the trek for is the A.P.C. surplus, prices are good and it is a good brand to pick up for basics, for men especially in that location. In that street and the street parallel to that (can't remember if it's below or above) there are cute little independent shops, a lot ran by Japanese expats for some reason who have a really nice curation of things but these shops seem to come and go a lot.

There's a lot of secondhand vintage in the area but it's mostly crap for tourists at inflated prices. I do like RoseMarket Vintage which has designer vintage, quite unique pieces, a bit more free spirited than other designer vintage shops in Paris. Kind of that luxe 70s Parisienne vibe. On the pricier side, especially compared to the other vintage places in the area (technically I'm stretching the boundary of Pigalle with this one though).

Let me know if you need any specific address of the above as I know Google maps can get itself confused quite a bit in Paris.

WRT to Italy, I've always sort of viewed it as it's such a family focused society that there's sort almost an obligation to present as a unit and reflect each other in that way. So you'll see less of that contrast of a man just wearing any old thing with a female partner dressed to the nines.

That's great thanks. It's just the 2 of us (I swear I do bring DC on trips too) so we'll have a potter and probably wind our way across to more familiar territory.

I'm trying to remember who originally recommended Sensai bronze gel xing maybe? I think I bought it about a year ago and didn't think it did much for me. This summer however, with my skin in better condition, it has been a revelation. Or maybe I'm moving towards preferring less make up. I finally get the hype and I've been topping it off with Rhode tosted teddy as my go-to summer look .

Papyrophile · 23/08/2024 16:56

I am thrilled to read that the Sensai bronzing gel is working for you this summer, Elle. It's been a staple of my make up bag since forever. The local department store stopped stocking it about 16 years ago, so I used to make pilgrimages to Harrods. Thank heaven for on-line; it has made little stuff more convenient.

Very sad news, my lovely mum died suddenly 10 days ago, very peacefully in her sleep. She was 89 and had been well and healthy all her life, so we are grateful --- if sorry for ourselves. Pulls marinieres are de rigueur for her funeral, as it will hopefully still be summer.

Floisme · 23/08/2024 18:43

It was her default summer wear. She had them in every colour/weight/sleeve length and wore them with jeans or linen trousers. (Cashmere jumper in winter.) We've taken a bright one, and best jeans and proper undies, and some favourite loafers as the final outfit, all sprayed with Mitsouko.

Thank you for your kind wishes flo and bo. Ma won her her dream exit ticket, and it's only the left behind who grieve. The family feel very sad, but to reach nearly 90 without ill health or suffering..........

That is lovely! I'm sorry to hear about her death from your perspective but it's a good death from her's.

Watching the Disney+ film of the Taylor Swift concert in LA just now, I made my son promise that at my funeral he'll make sure they play Who's Afraid of Little Old Me which tickled him.

Clothingcrisis · 23/08/2024 23:58

Evening all, have name changed and am hijacking your thread to ask for help - please!
I'm off to Le Jules Verne restaurant in the Eiffel Tower in November for dinner for a Big Birthday. I want something new and lovely to wear, but I'm really struggling with what.
I'm 5'7, size 14. Fat side of curvy though good underwear does help the mid section. Dark hair and eyes, olive skin. Hate jumpsuits, trousers need heels (very long body, very short legs). Love black, suit navy, green, blue and, sometimes, pink. Yellow, cream, orange drain me.
Any ideas? Please!

Redandblue11 · 24/08/2024 08:44

Papyrophile so sorry to hear the sad news 💐
I love how you describe her outfits, perfect simplicity.

Redandblue11 · 24/08/2024 10:34

Italian weddings. I don’t have personal experience, but the Italian side of Argentina probably means that our weddings are also very much evening wear type occasions.
Depending on where the family is from they also do things like the groom taking the bridal gather out.

Yes to dress up, long or midi dresses are good in Italy as long as they are dressy in a more evening or elegant cocktail party.
Having just come back from Italy and specially visited where the posh Italians spend their time in their second homes, I can vouch for men in impecable outfits, of course I wasn’t in a wedding and was holidays seaside … but they showed off their tans in these white and light blue perfectly ironed shirts and very well fitted trousers.

Some inspiration here in vogue Italia.
Is in Italian but easy to see the photos of course / there is google translate too.
when they show the ivory suit is in case there is a theme, such as guests to wear black/white (but avoiding white is the thing to do too unless estipulated)
the length of dress, a midi will be appropriate if is dressy.

@Clothingcrisis is it your birthday? Or will you be a guest? And what sort of things do you like? It is probably touristy place so the dress up can be as you like. But if is a special occasion I am always up for dressing up. Maybe if you guide us with what sort of things you like we can give some ideas/inspiration.

Finally Elle, in our recent Paris trip we walked around Pigalle and we stopped for a drink and small bites at Barbot in Av Trudaine. Really good place and excellent wine and seafood. We were not having a full dinner, but some people were.
That road had a handful of very well appointed places. The other one that caught my attention was Bonjour Bonsoir next to where we sat.
I would definitely go back to that road and eat/drink again there, it was not touristy at all.

Just found this thread - committed Francophile who hasn't made it over there yet this year, so I'm going to hang out here vicariously!

botemp · 24/08/2024 11:28

Welcome Seaside 👋

Hmm, I suspect that Vogue Italia article is a recycled one, just translated from another edition (going by the picture I'm assuming the UK one), they do that a lot. Hopefully they tailor the content a little but I've seen plenty of articles that are just direct copies, the ones in the Dutch edition barely make any sense most days

crisis, yeah, I'm with Red in not totally knowing what you're asking for. If it's about the dress code of the restaurant and not wanting to stand out for the wrong reasons or special occasion wear. If it's the former, it's as Red says, dress down rather than up, blouses and casual blazers type thing. But if it's an occasion for which you want to dress up, go for it, they're there to deliver you a memorable meal not the other way round, nothing wrong with advertising it's a special moment for you. I'd just go with a silhouette that you feel great in already and look for a dressier version of that. I'd be inclined to go for coordinating separates over a dress to get more wear out of them and be able to wear bits of the memory later. And maybe something with a geometric print with lots of lines as a sort of nod to the Eiffel tower?

papyrophile I'm sorry to hear of your dear mum's passing and am glad you can take comfort that it wasn't drawn out or overly distressing. I love the idea of including her fragrance as part of the outfit when it was something she always wore.

Speaking of frangrance it seems Dries Van Noten will be focusing on his. I have a much loved bottle of the collaboration with Frederic Malle in my fridge. I'm not generally a gourmand lover but that one was so good.

My darling mum died this year too. It is so hard to lose a mum.

Papyrophile · 25/08/2024 16:11

Thank you yesmen. It was sudden, and we are saddened but writing the words for her eulogy this weekend, it's impossible not to be pleased that she was spared all the suffering of a long decline.

There are 137 pairs of shoes looking for a new home, size 4.5. More Hotter than Manolo or Robert Clergerie sadly.

banivani · 25/08/2024 16:23

I’m so sorry for both of you, it’s a difficult loss even if you can find peace with good memories and the support of family. ❤️

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 26/08/2024 07:09

And welcome Seaside and Crisis!

I think I tend to agree about good, special, separates being the way to go, as I have acquired so many barely-worn dresses over the years.

banivani · 26/08/2024 09:53

One hundred and thirty seven!!! :O All you can say really is "well done" ;)

Castle, I forgot to comment on your Dream shop above. Some lovely things, but a rather annoying shop layout so I got tired of browsing. But you hadn't bought from them, was that right?
