Do I need help? I think I want to buy a swimdress!

So I'd always associated these items with my grandmother and Esther Williams. I'm not ready for the full flower swimcap but I have found myself strangely drawn to swimdresses when looking for a new swimsuit. Something like this:

Palm print dress

Navy with frills

Navy with belt.

Is this a sign of madness or have I found the gateway to a new poolside look? For context, I'm in my 50s, size 12, hourglass figure with wobbly but slimish thighs.

edited for spelling.

They are awful! Even on a fat person, they just look you’re ashamed and uncomfortable.

I literally can’t imagine looking at someone and thinking they must be ashamed and uncomfortable because of what they’re wearing. Weird

Now I’m looking at swim dresses……this is so cute.

I'm old. I like my old backside covered up. Lands End tug less suits have nice low legs. Decathlon do some Tankini with boy short legs too.

there’s no rule to say you have to have lots of flesh on show.

@verylongday

its from Amazon.

Bambooshoot · 08/08/2024 15:50

I love swim dresses! Where I live the sun has a lot of bite so pretty much everyone covers up, from kids to adults. I wear a long sleeved rash vest with either shorts or a flippy swim skirt, I probably look more like I’m about to play tennis than swim but who cares, rather that than melanoma!

AddictedToBooks · 08/08/2024 15:54

I have a swimdress and swim weekly and I absolutely love it - it gives me that extra bit of confidence by covering my hips and I don't notice any difference when swimming - it doesn't get in the way at all as the skirt is so short.
If you want it, then go for it - they're really flattering.

I think I'd go more swim shorts/playsuit options... the dress would make me feel like a 5 year old . Sugar plum fairy...

Can I jump on this and ask what brand that boy leg suit is?

How are they doing lengths in a pool?

I don't have any problem - however I swim breaststroke, so I don't know if they'd be a bit distracting if you did the crawl.
To be honest, I don't notice I'm wearing a swimdress once in the pool as it floats up but isn't a long skirt - I only notice it when I change direction in the pool without stopping swimming and then I feel it stroking my thighs a little but I honestly notice no difference to when I used to wear a traditional swimsuit

This is very much like mine - the shape and length and halterneck are the same - mine just has polka dots

TinkerTailorSoldier · 08/08/2024 18:39

Does a swim dress have a builtin bikini bottom? Or is it a 2-piece outfit?
If its 2 piece, I'm getting me 1

greengreyblue · 08/08/2024 18:40

It’s a swimsuit with an attached skirt . One piece .

ghislaine · 08/08/2024 18:48

@TinkerTailorSoldier you could always go for a tankini with a skirt. Personally I live in fear of the top rising up and exposing my pasty tum but ymmv.

@greengreyblue I love that simplybe one, the frill is really cute.

And I’d like to thank everyone on this thread, I had no idea there was such a community of swimdress wearers out there. Time to take the plunge, I think!

@ghislaine I know, it’s in my basket…..

Sooty20235 · 08/08/2024 20:12

Im size 8 and love them.
It’s mad to think people are saying you might be judged for wearing something that apparently shows you are worried about being judged…

Holibobsjoy · 08/08/2024 20:15

I wear a swim dress or a pair of swim shorts because being +sized I have jiggly bits I don't care about looking older I care about having the confidence to be in the pool or beach. People need to wear what they are comfortable with and to say they are frumpy or old and something you wouldn't be seen in is a bit of a slap fkr those of us who are given the ability to access the water thanks to these things. BTW shein has some great swimdress and long line 2 piece swimwear.

Bowies · 09/08/2024 00:12

I prefer board shorts but it seems you like the vintage rather than surf look, so it seems a natural progression. Wear one if you want to!

BrandNewBicep · 09/08/2024 07:23

Even Kate Moss is rocking a swim dress in Ibiza no less. I won't link to the Daily Mail, but she looked absolutely fine.

DilemmaDelilah · 09/08/2024 09:48

I always wear swimdresses and they are fine for swimming in!

Starlightgazing · 09/08/2024 14:39

@ghislaine Wear what you want, I’m sure there are some way worse sights at the beach/pool than how you look !!!

Grammarnut · 09/08/2024 16:06

I think they look attractive. I like the style with the longer legs, too.

Vizella · 09/08/2024 23:30

DustyMaiden · 06/08/2024 19:26

I had this one but DGD pinched it.

It's a pin-up girl skirtini from the 50s and is actually very sexy - that's why she pinched it!

llamalines · 10/08/2024 07:29

I go swimming regularly and I wear "boy leg" swim suits. (Stupid name! But it's how to search for them).

I really can't be doing with having to constantly keep myself "swim ready" down below. I'm not even in a relationship (nor looking for one). What a monumental waste of time and money.

Instead I just pull my swimming costume on, and I'm ready to go. Just like men have the luxury of doing without even thinking about it.

FWIW, I'd love a swim dress for a change but can't find any in my size! (24).

If anyone knows of any in my size, please let me know!
