Tell me about your hot weather day dresses? A few requirements...

It hit 30 degrees in London today - up that by a bazillion degrees for tube journeys - and once again I was wearing The Wrong Thing.

It was an office day, so I saw loads of women of all ages in central London wafting about looking great in loose dresses. It's reminded me that I have a stop off for a few days in Sydney in February '25, in Australia's high summer, and I should be buying a couple of things for that now. My wish list is:

Dresses for all day daywear, and I burn really easily and will be carrying a backback, so nothing backless. Looking to be covered up but cool, sartorially and temperature- wise. Mild cut-outs would be ok.

Likewise some kind of sleeves would be good, even better if they're not puffy but the milkmaid thing seems hard to avoid at the moment

Natural fibres a must.

Let me know if there's anything you can point me towards. I seem to have loads of clothes but nothing that fits the bill, and am aware summer sales are on at the moment.

After I realised that viscose is a breathable fabric, it's my hot day go to. I find a smooth-weave viscose (as opposed to a twill or crepe) much cooler than linen and most cottons – even just touching the fabric in the wardrobe it feels cooler than my other clothes.

My best two are from Zara - really thin cotton midi dresses. You have to search through an awful lot of shite to find anything though.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/08/2024 10:57

I find viscose awful in the heat - it creases so much and makes me feel really sweaty.

Agree with Zara. I got stopped in London by someone admiring my broderie shirt dress, and I'm an overweight sixty something.

I have some lovely long sleeved linen mix shirt dresses from John Lewis and a ridiculous number of voluminous COS dresses. I live somewhere that had long hot summers until this year.

I think its lovely in the heat and Im not sure how you are getting yours to crease! Its one of the things I love about it, doesnt crease and doesnt need ironing!

Im currently swanning about in a lovely v neck maxi dress, 100% viscose, side splits and it even has pockets! Its from the Tu range and I have alot of this type of dress from Tu for hot weather.
(just so happens this one was £1.50 off Vinted....total bargain!)😎

We will have to agree to disagree! It creases loads on me.

Seasalt have lovely high-quality dresses.

I like Nobody's Child Alexa dress in linen for keeping cool in the city.

In recent years I’ve got some lovely summer dresses (both long and short and I’m only 4.10”) in New Look, Zara, Matalan, H&M and Apricot. As I’m short I normally go for a midi dress and it looks like a maxi dress on me 😀

Littlemisssunseeker · 02/08/2024 22:26

Another vote for viscose on a hot day! I'd previously had a weird snobbery about it and only go for cotton or linen in summer, but recently ordered this(100% viscose) and I've never felt so cool and calm in 30 degrees heat. The fabric actually feels cool which is lovely..

Love this! Thanks for linking, I just bought it.

Let me know what you think. I missed it in green. Pink isn't really my colour, but I love the design, and it's a silk/linen mix.

@Mercurial123 update on the Jigsaw dress. Big disappointment! Fabric and colour were lovely. The top of it though was huge, even though it was supposed to be a 10. I think that the picture of the model must have had the excess fabric clipped in the back and holding her arms in a way to not show how loose it is around the body.

It felt like they had done a one-size-fits-all for the top, and bottom, then just did differing waist measurements for the sizes, as the waist was vaguely correct (though still a bit loose).

Mercurial123 · 08/08/2024 19:08

@GreenPoppy, that's so disappointing. It looked beautiful on the website. I was hoping to find the green on EBay, but I won't bother now. Thanks for the update.
