I’ve coloured my hair at home for years and I’m thinking of taking a leap and highlighting my own hair at home: just a few strands here and there.

I’ve got mousey brown hair. Ive watched loads and loads of videos. Bought foils and a 30% peroxide bleach kit and have been practising the foil technique ( without product obvs😀). I did a strand test on the hair at the back of my head near my nape and I got a good golden blonde result after leaving the bleach in for 30 mins. Didn’t use toner. I’m aware that the front of my hair / roots will probably lighten more quickly so I’m going to factor this in.

What confuses me is that I’ve heard you should aim for a pale yellow result when bleaching. I removed my bleach at a mid yellow stage but really liked the colour. If this is so, and I’ve committed a bit of a bleaching faux pas, do most people bleach to a peroxide lift blonde and use toners to get a golden shade after? Also in the past I remember getting a mix of colours when having highlights done. How is this achieved - are individual lighted strands toned in different colours?
