Should I buy this skirt?

TudorClock · 21/07/2024 21:35

I saw this skirt today.
It's lovely in real life.
I have nothing to wear with it, can't really imagine what would look right.

The top on the model looks dreadful.
I have to have sleeves at least to the elbow....

Any ideas what would work or talk me out of buying it please !

I think a plain jersey top would work, or a very simple blouse.

TudorClock · 21/07/2024 21:55

Thanks @MavisTheMonkey what colour Jersey top would you go for?

No. I can't imagine what would look right with it either. I think it would hang unworn.

Hohofortherobbers · 21/07/2024 22:40

Its really lovely, but in reality where would you wear it? Office? No, pub? No, restaurant? No.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/07/2024 22:55

It would look nice in winter with a thick cream jumper

I can't imagine it would go with anything else

DogwoodTree · 21/07/2024 23:04

I can see it with a plain, boat/scoop neck, 3/4 length sleeve, tight, jersey top to kind of play up the elegant ballerina vibe of the skirt.

Agreed. A boxy jumper to contrast with the sleekness of the skirt and flat boots, ankle or knee. I think it would only work if it's deliberately dressed down in a grungy way rather than dressed up.

Something like these funnel neck jumpers.

No. Don't buy it. You won't wear it

Callmemel · 22/07/2024 01:03

Tricky. I'd go with the thinnest, finest, most body-hugging, silk knit turtleneck black sweater I could find. But I'd probably skip it, tbh.

Mosaic123 · 22/07/2024 01:54

Bright yellow blouse with big sleeves. OP said sleeves must be elbow length. Or a silky white one.

diktat · 22/07/2024 07:30

I think the way they’ve had the model twist her hips makes it difficult to see how it looks normally.

I think if you can’t immediately visualise what you’d wear with it then it won’t get worn.

OneBadKitty · 22/07/2024 10:07

It looks lovely but would be hard to style- a plain black or cream cami top is all I can imagine it with. It might look OK if you have a dressy Christmas do to go to or a wedding but don't think it would get much wear.

MorrisZapp · 22/07/2024 10:10

I see loads of skirts I like in the shops but I don't buy any of them. The ones I already have sit unloved in the wardrobe. I'm 53 and simply can't style them any more.

When I was young in the 2000s it was slinky vests all the way. Spaghetti straps are no longer my friend and I don't know what to do with my waist with a skirt and t-shirt.

I'm so with you....I used to love a skirt - short, knee length, midi....then I lost my waist and nothing looks right. I just look like the Queen Mum god rest her soul.

DelphiniumBlue · 22/07/2024 10:15

No, don't buy it, unless you have at least 3 occasions in mind to which you could wear it. It's almost fancy dress. And as you've already worked out, it would be very hard to find a top to pair it with.

Coconutter24 · 22/07/2024 10:23

Are you planning on it being an everyday skirt or wearing it for a special occasion coming up? It’s more of an occasion skirt, would only need a simple top to make it work

Holandcleo · 22/07/2024 10:31

My first thoughts were that this looks lovely in a photo and on a very tall very slim model. In real life? What kind of occasion would this be appropriate for? A very formal evening? Worn once? But with what?
Do you attend the sort of events that this would suit?
My other concern was the length…at 93cm this would be trailing across the floor on me , and I’m not small!

understatedeleganza · 22/07/2024 10:37

It's lovely and the kind of thing i would have worn in my twenties. The colour is challenging though, very cool and won't go with a lot. What type of occasion?

TudorClock · 22/07/2024 10:57

Thank you for all the responses, sorry thought this thread had died a death last night and didn't realise!

I have decided not to buy it....I am a bit of a magpie and have form for buying pretty clothes that don't really fit my life / can't figure our what to wear with them, and then just glare at me reproachfully from the wardrobe!

I can see winter with chunky jumper working @LaurieFairyCake but I seem to feel a bit daft trying to pull that look off when I've tried it.

I agree that no longer being able to wear a spaghetti strap top as @MorrisZapp said is the ruination of many an outfit for me.

Thanks all

Black poloneck for autumn / winter. Super annoying pose from the model - can’t see how it hangs properly!

KewBridgeSteamMuseum · 22/07/2024 12:31

Simple waist length crew neck jumper: M&S or Uniqlo will do you a thousand of them.

Where and when to wear it is much trickier - if I had a solution to that I'd buy it myself right now because it's lovely.

Time40 · 22/07/2024 15:05

Its really lovely, but in reality where would you wear it? Office? No, pub? No, restaurant? No.

Office - no. Pub and restaurant - why on earth not?

I would wear it with a plain, slim-fitting jersey top, and there are so many colours that go with pale grey - most colours, in fact.

ThatsAFineLookingHighHorse · 22/07/2024 16:07

Honestly, I think you'd struggle to wear it
