Should I buy this skirt?

TudorClock · 21/07/2024 21:35

I saw this skirt today.
It's lovely in real life.
I have nothing to wear with it, can't really imagine what would look right.

The top on the model looks dreadful.
I have to have sleeves at least to the elbow....

Any ideas what would work or talk me out of buying it please !

It is gorgeous, but speaking as someone who has wasted money on clothes that I have fallen in love with simply because of the way they look ask yourself these questions:
What would I wear it with?
How would I accessorise it?
Where would I wear it?
How often would I wear it?
Is it wash or day clean?
Is it suitable for the life I lead and the person I am or am I buying a dream?

LlynTegid · 22/07/2024 16:56

If we knew each other I would try to talk you out of buying it.

NewEmployeeAdvice · 23/07/2024 15:22

There's a reason it's in the sale.

It's one of those things that is never quite the right colour/shape/style to go with anything else and you will never be quite sure of the right occasion to wear it.

It’s a bit Carrie Bradshaw in the 00’s which I’m guessing it’s meant to be.
Lovely but deffo a wardrobe filler not a real life killer!

RosesAndHellebores · 24/07/2024 08:28

I think it's terrific. But it's an evening skirt. It would look fabulous with a black leotard or leotard like top in black with a short or boxy evening sweater in black or grey, probably beaded, sequinned or jewelled in some way.

Perfect for the opera or posh parties.

Love it but you have to have the occasions to wear it and a suitable cardi/jacket will cost

HiFillyJonk · 24/07/2024 10:43

It's a drab colour, impractical and looks like it was made in 2002. Save your money.

Colinfromaccounts · 24/07/2024 10:44

I hate it. It’s awful. It will make you look really frumpy.

I find that checklist too presciptive.

Is it wash or dry clean? - I don't care. Never consider that

Is it suitable for the life I lead and the person I am or am I buying a dream?

Not sure what's wrong with that.

As for "when would I wear it" - I don't love that skirt but if I did, I'd make reasons to wear it. It can easily be dressed down.

What would I wear it with - see the examples given.

Missing the point of the thread, but why do so many of the models on that site have their bras on display?

BeNoisyCritic · 24/07/2024 19:56

Why have the elbow requirement?

TudorClock · 24/07/2024 21:12

Why have the elbow requirement?

After having a melanoma removed, I had to have a wide local excision operation. ( Its unsightly and has to be kept out of the sun)

No it'll get jam on it

CautiousLurker · 24/07/2024 21:59

It looks like a dancer’s skirt, so in my head I can only really see it with a leotard/body type top (or something that looks like one). 1/2 or 3/4 sleeve. It would need to be a similar colour, though - silver/grey or maybe a pale pink?

it’s very elegant if you have the figure and some gorgeous shoes.

Onelifeonly · 24/07/2024 22:08

It would (probably, since the way the skirt hangs is hard to determine) be a lot better as a dress! I like the look of the fabric and colour but I sense that only a plain top would work and would likely look dull with the skirt. TBH I find this with a lot of flowing skirts - it's hard to find a compatible top, so I end up just getting black or navy and look dull / too obvious.

Garlicnaan · 24/07/2024 23:24

No, the model is doing weird poses making me think it looks shit when just standing there.

I also can't think of what would go with it except maybe black. It's not a v flattering colour on most people.

If you can't think of three things to wear it with you already own, it's a no from me!

purplevipersgrass · 25/07/2024 00:48

Offforatwix · 24/07/2024 21:15

I was running through in my mind when I'd wear something as draped and showy as that and briefly thought it might be good for a Christmas party – but then decided I'd be bound to drop food on it and it looks as if it would mark badly.

When models adopt poses like those in the photos, it always makes me suspicious that a garment looks awful just hanging.

OP, I've had several items in my wardrobe for years while I've waited for the right opportunity to wear them. I think this might be one of those garments, if you know what I mean. Good idea at the time, but never the right occasion to wear them.

1mabon · 25/07/2024 09:18

If you are very slim, buy it, if not forget it.

CointreauVersial · 25/07/2024 09:27

"Is it suitable for the life I lead and the person I am or am I buying a dream?

Well, nothing wrong with that, if you have plenty of spare cash to blow on things you will NEVER wear, because they simply don't work with your lifestyle. Like buying a ballgown when you never go to balls. Just becomes another item on a hanger in your (bulging) wardrobe.

I have a blind spot when it comes to things like trouser suits or posh dresses. I get influenced by someone online, love the look, know it would suit me, and am so tempted to buy. But I don't live their lifestyle - I spend my life in casual clothes - I don't even need to look smart in the office, and if I go out I'm more of a "jeans and a nice top" person. I might look lovely in a wafty beige linen wide-leg trouser suit or a silk dress but have literally no place to wear such things.

So it's always a question I ask myself.

Re: the skirt, it's difficult to tell from the ridiculous model pose, but you could order it and see if it works, then return if not. I like it.

Lillers · 25/07/2024 09:28

A friend of mine (who is very stylish) once told me not to spend money on an item unless I can think of at least 2 things I already own that I would wear with it, and at least 2 places I would be comfortable wearing it.

It’s advice that has saved me from many an impulse buy, especially when things are on sale.

munchoc · 25/07/2024 09:29

It's awful looks like the chair decoration at a tacky wedding.

Do you never go to a pub? Or a restaurant? Or a theatre? Up to you to stick to jeans and a top if that's what you like but unless you never leave the house I don't believe there's literally no place you couldn't wear wide legged linen trousers or a silk dress.

GlassHeart1 · 25/07/2024 09:39

No from me too.
In fact I have started getting rid of skirts and rather wear dresses, far easier to live with without the constant mix and matching which can be a total pain.

CointreauVersial · 25/07/2024 09:50

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle - Wide legged trousers on their own - yes, all the time. Wearing them now. But with a teeshirt and flip flops, not a matching jacket. I honestly can't think of a time where I'd wear a suit. Certainly not to a pub or a restaurant. Yes, I do wheel out a nice dress, if I'm going to a summer garden party, or a wedding, but they are few and far between, and I have several items I could call upon (having not heeded my own advice about not "buying the dream"!). I would just feel overdressed anywhere else.

That's your own self imposed limitations.

If you wear trousers to go out presumably you wear a jacket- why does it become unwearable if the trousers are in the same material? Obviously I don't mean traditional pre Covid tailored work wear suits, but there's absolutely no reason why linen trousers and a matching jacket or a dress can't be worn in a pub or restaurant.

You don't want to , and that's fine if that's your choice, but that's different from "there's nowhere I could wear them"
