Shampoo for hair that gets greasy quickly

Hello! I’ve generally managed to wash my hair every other day and have it still looking reasonable, but in the last 6 months it’s looked a bit minging and greasy/lank if I don’t do it daily! Any recommendations for shampoos for greasy hair appreciated!

I’m the same and I have tried literally 30-40 different shampoos. They don’t work. The only thing that works for me is dry shampoo between washes. I have Batista on auto delivery from Amazon 🤦‍♀️

Try Upcircle shampoo creme. Takes a while to get the hang of but now I can go 5 days between washes.

Olaplex 4 is brilliant. I still wash my hair every day, but this leaves my hair fluffy and light, rather than heavy and greasy.

Just wash your hair every day. If your hair is greasy, you need it. It's not rocket science, it's basic hygiene when you have very oily skin/scalp.

Have you tried shampoo bars? I don't know if they work, but heard good things about them

I agree with this. Just wash it. I’ve tried everything over many years and nothing works. Also I’ve noticed my scalp gets a bit sore and irritated if it gets greasy or if I use dry shampoo.

It does depend on each person. My hair used to get greasy everyday and I had to wash every day. During Covid, I extended it to every other day, used deep cleansing shampoos, etc. I now need to wash it only twice a week. Could stretch it more but that’s when it starts to look flat and greasy and I’m not a fan of dry shampoo.

Not saying OP will be able to achieve that, but I used to think it was me having a greasy scalp but it was a case of me washing too much. So sometimes it isn’t as straightforward as a hygiene thing.

Washing your hair frequently does not lead to greasier hair. Your oil glands have no clue how often you are washing your scalp - there is no mechanism for this - they have no sensors for this.

Faith in nature grapefruit and orange has been good for my DD.

I've found the Tresemme cleanse and replenish range really good for my hair that usually gets greasy very quickly. Have also recently tried Voduz which is good too.

Well in that case, I have no idea why my hair went from being flat and greasy every morning to managing to lasting a few days when I stopped washing it every day during the pandemic, but that’s what happened!

I'm afraid this!

Also wash in the morning.

I have had years of greasy hair but I have to say I love the fact I am washed and clean every day first thing as a result. Helps with BO as well as avoiding greasy hair.

Also, if anyone else gets greasy t-zone try Erborian Matt creme as a primer

This stuff trashed my hair unfortunately. Would leave it so dry and unmanageable. Still reaping the "rewards" years later as I had quite a bit of breakage.

I have greasy roots and dry ends annoyingly.

The only thing I've found helps me go 2 days is shampoo containing salicylic acid from Revolution which I was recommended on here.

Could have been product build up

I've tried extending wash times several times over the past 25 years and never managed it although could go longer when pregnant due to hormone changes and producing less sebum. My skin was amazing! As was my hair...

I'm just a grease producing person. I have a greasy t zone as well.

For those who don't have a greasy face, perhaps this works. For those who do, chances are you just produce a lot of grease.

Lots of good advice here. My hair gets greasy quickly and I don't like washing it too much due to drying hassle and damage (if blow-drying). But when I go to the salon it lasts days without a wash! I was happy to throw money at the problem but my hairdresser says it's more about technique than shampoo. She says to wash it twice, and not just on the top. Get your head upside down and really really scrub it in. Twice. Same goes for rinsing, get everywhere, tip upside to make sure you're really getting it all out. No conditioner on anything but the last couple of inches. She also says that using a hairdryer will help it last longer, even if just 50% dry and that the risk of damage is low if not washing and drying daily and using heat protector etc - it's an offset I guess.
When I bother to properly wash it like this it lasts loads longer.

I've always had greasy hair, I received Voduz illuminating shampoo and conditioner for Christmas and I've just bought more! It makes my hair feel so healthy and I wash it every other day, or every 3rd day if I'm not going out anywhere.

Mary46 · 04/03/2025 15:59

I like Head and Shoulders citrus one or grapefruit. My hair so thick. Had cut back on hair masks etc found hair bit greasier so just use small bit now.

Wendolino · 04/03/2025 16:05

I've tried just about everything and the best I've found is Aldi Lacura shampoo and conditioner (honestly!). The orange one. Lather twice then just condition the ends. I used to wash my hair daily or every 2 days but now I wash it every 3 days and it's not that bad by the third day.
When I think of all the expensive stuff I've tried over the years, it's hard to believe cheap stuff from Aldi is best.
