So, if Spain has male primogeniture, and if Felipe divorced Leti and married a younger woman, and this woman had a son, would the son displace Leonor and be Prince of the Asturias?

Yes.
we would need to pass the constitutional change to avoid this scenario

Maireas · 26/07/2024 08:17

That's brilliant, @justasking111 ! Direct him here! I was educating my husband and son in the same way, because they'd no idea who Mathilde or Mary were!

Thank you - a bit like the late Queen's Letters Patent to prevent a younger brother having a higher status than his older sister.

Bingo!

Choux · 26/07/2024 10:59

I was about to say that Leonor getting a younger half brother would cause a real issue. Especially if she was already Queen.

Obviously that's a highly improbable situation but the best time to change the succession laws is when no one is impacted or before Leonor has any children. I think one of the reasons Carl Philippe and Sofia do so many events in Sweden is because the King thinks his son should still be the heir.

Those national celebrations were rhetorical King and Carl Philippe are in uniform down with the soldiers and the Crown Princess is up on the balcony with the Queen. Looks wrong.

Thank you @Mencia - love the dives into history that these threads often bring.

From what I've read, King CG was not at all happy about C-P being demoted from Crown Prince when he was a few months old, even though the change to the constitution was already in progress when he was born. But it probably worked out for the best - CPV seems cheerful and hard-working and Estelle similar.

Norway's constitution underwent a similar reform but didn't apply retrospectively. That probably worked out for the best too, otherwise we'd be looking at Prince Consort Shaman!

Maireas · 26/07/2024 12:45

😱that's a lucky escape!

It was the same for the UK. It can create all sorts of issues to do it retrospectively, although Anne ahead of her younger brothers would not necessarily be a bad thing.

I think the UK should extend it to peerages etc too though. So that eg Lady Louise would inherit the Wessex title and not her brother.

It doesn't seem fair or right that the abolishment of primogeniture is only for the monarchical line, and doesn't apply to any other hereditary titles.

I like Leti's outfit and the shoes are lovely too.

Edited

I was particularly impressed by Leti’s arms!

Maireas · 26/07/2024 14:13

I agree with you, @KnickerlessParsons and I know some families in the peerage are campaigning about it. Including the current Duke of Westminster, newly married and obviously contemplating the issue.

Fergie always knows what colours suit her - I wonder if she dyes her hair? It’s a good job if it is. I remember her going blonde a good long time ago and it quite suited her.

I imagine Carl-Philippe feels tremendously relieved not to be monarch. The pressure must be grim.

SqueakyDinosaur · 26/07/2024 16:51

Inheritance of titles and estates is one of the exemptions from the Gender Recognition Act. It shows that legislators know very well the difference between a man and a woman when they choose to.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 26/07/2024 17:38

It does seem totally wrong & sexist in this day & age that women can't yet inherit peerages automatically as the eldest born child.

There's an earl who's recently succeeded to a title - perhaps Rosebery? He had 4 daughters and then a son but one of his daughters now appears to identify as a man. But it's the youngest son who's still the heir!

KnickerlessParsons · 26/07/2024 18:21

Of course she does. 64 year olds don't have hair that bright!

RitaIncognita · 26/07/2024 18:37

Most of the English peerages can't be inherited by women at all. At least some of the Scottish peerages allow a woman to inherit if there are no male heirs.

Various royals at the Olympics opening ceremony.
Including Albert sadly doing his Butlins red coat impersonation.

Mary seems to have had several outfit changes and then bobbed off on holiday. Perhaps she can time travel.
