I try not to wear more than three colours total in my outfit
So black shorts / black white striped t shirt / gold sandals
Or mom jeans , white t shirt , Khaki shacket etc.
If I wear workout gear it’s only all black , including all black trainers too.

CocoapuffPuff · 14/07/2024 18:56

Wear what I like and don't give a stuff about anyone else's opinions. I'm far more interesting than my clothes. Bet you all are, too!

Frankbutchersfangs · 14/07/2024 18:59

No cold-shoulder tops/dresses
No military/camouflage looking clothes
No leopard print clothes (shudder)
Wear what suits me, not what is in fashion

GettingStuffed · 14/07/2024 18:49

Patterns on top or bottom not both.

This was the only one I could think of. You see it a lot with summer clothes. Only one half can have a pattern and the other half should ideally be in one of the colours of that pattern or in a colour that goes with everything.

Gwenhwyfar · 14/07/2024 19:07

" my upper arms are a disaster area thanks to yo-yo dieting. (If there was one thing I could go back and tell my younger self...)"

How do you know it's down to yo-yo dieting? Upper arms get flabby in most people as we age.

This is a thread about wearing what you like though? ‘Personal fashion rules’, as I understand it means what you think looks good on you, not laying down the law for everyone - though there are definitely plenty of threads on S&B where people do that!

Anothershapeofapple · 14/07/2024 19:15

Can you all come and take me shopping? I need you.

Not like mine, alas! Very droopy and cellulitey now. 😬😄

Tbf I'm not certain it's that, but it's the only thing I can think of, as they weren't like that before the yo-yo dieting.

I'm really not convinced it's that

No, I'll be honest and say that I don't think two different patterns look good on anyone else either. Of course, they can wear what they want, but I don't have to like it.

ClaudineMallory · 14/07/2024 19:20

No grey (shudders), no black unless it's a funeral.
No frills, bows, high heels or tights.
Unless the garment is lined, I wear a Marks' Cool tech slip or camisole. Stops things being see through (my pet hate), and makes clothes hang beautifully.
Oh and I mix silver and gold jewellery, which I know is supposed to be a fashion crime, but I like it!

GettingStuffed · 14/07/2024 18:49

Patterns on top or bottom not both.

Gawd, I was terrible for this in my younger days. I look back at some old photos and cringe, I'd throw things on with no regard for whether the top half of my outfit actually complemented the bottom.

It wasn't until a VERY unstylish bf commented on it to me that I got my act together.

Hopethisendswell · 14/07/2024 19:24

Ooh interesting thread!

Long maxi skirt/ trousers = short sleeve/ sleeveless top
Midi skirt/ cropped trousers = 3/4 length sleeve top
Big boobs so plain tops eg no frills, large patterns, pockets over chest.
Cropped or bootcut trousers
Heeled boots for casual winter footwear
Flats or vans for casual summer footwear
Dress for the job I'm doing eg sportswear and trainers for the gym only, worn jeans and tshirt for gardening.
Always have one half fitted eg cigarette pants with a looser top or maxi skirt with fitted top
Patterned skirt= matching colour top or complete contrast, same with shoes (either match the top or contrast)
Necklace or earrings not both

Bit weird I know 😂

ruethewhirl · 14/07/2024 19:28

Gwenhwyfar · 14/07/2024 19:19

I'm really not convinced it's that

Do you have any theories then? (I'm not being sarcastic, I'm curious 😄)

ClaudineMallory · 14/07/2024 19:30

Not weird, @Hopethisendswell ! Your personal style. Go for it 👍

DelphiniumBlue · 14/07/2024 19:30

No wide leg trousers- they only look good with a fitted top which is not something I would wear. Dresses rather than skirts since my waistline has disappeared. No coloured jeans or leggings. No beige/cream/pastels. No puff or wide sleeves. No round necks. No polyester. Nothing boxy. No big patterns. No uncomfortable shoes.
Yes to black and vivid, cool colours. Yes to neat shoulder lines, flowing dresses,
deep V-necks and collars. Yes to delicate silver jewellery.

mynewusername2023 · 14/07/2024 19:32

Wear what I'm comfortable in and don't feel pressured by anyone else to deviate from that.

SuperSharpShooter · 14/07/2024 19:34

Too old for this to matter now, but back in the raving days - No tights with trainers 😂

No Basic T shirts or round necks. (Fitted band T at a push)
No V necks
No double denim
I'm quite picky on tonal matching.
Hardly EVER any florals
No tankinis or swim shorts
No caps

BigFatSober · 14/07/2024 19:38

Less is more (ie I prefer understated...not that I wear less clothing 😂)

Topoftheflops · 14/07/2024 19:40

No socks with sandals or high heels like you see in Vogue mags.
No crocs. Ever.
No wide leg cropped trousers.
No neon colours.
Only leopard print accents like bag or belt only.
Gym clothes only for the gym not flouncing about in.

Gowlett · 14/07/2024 19:40

I need some new personal style rules!
I’m going down a jazzy lady route, I don’t even know how it happened (I’ve been buying the “interesting” pieces, then wearing them together, I think). I’m turning into Susie from Curb Your Enthusiasm. I used to wear cool clothes when I was younger, so I think I’m channeling that energy into my wardrobe, but I’m not Carrie Bradshaw. I’m Susie! It needs to stop…

ConflictofInterest · 14/07/2024 19:50

Only buy dark colours for work. I prefer bright colours but am never in the mood to wear them to work and they end up unworn.
Only natural fabrics, mainly linen or wool.
No black, white, or pastel colours, I look terrible in them.
2nd hand expensive brands in good fabric are almost always better than buying new for same price.

ClaudineMallory · 14/07/2024 19:50

Bloody love Susie. She rocks! I think the costume department on Curb are brilliant!

BluebirdBoogie · 14/07/2024 19:54

No bright colours.
No patterns below the waist.
Do not match earrings/belt/handbag/shoes.
No white trousers.
No heels with trousers.
No fussiness, eg frills.

CeeJay81 · 14/07/2024 19:54

No jeans unless Jeggings.
Trousers must be high waisted or leggings (they are not made for bubble butts)
Skirts need to be knee length or longer
Dresses must have a waist or wear with a waist belt.
Prefer colourful tops but no v necks or anything low cut(no boobs).
