If you wanted to spend £100 - £200 on a handbag for an 18 year old, what brand would you buy?

I cannot emphasise enough how much I do not know or understand about fashion, style and handbags. I use a rucksack because it's practical - it's one my 12-yr-old used to use as a school bag.

However, the 18 year old is quite interested in fashion, cares deeply about aesthetics, is beautiful and arty and always looks so lovely. She's a little bit alternative - Arial-red hair and mostly wears black and lace. She makes her own clothes, and buys from charity shops.

She really appreciates quality. Her grandparents bought her a watch, and she did lots of research and chose a very classic, elegant style, and it was important that it was a Swiss watch-maker, not a fashion brand. She wears it every day. She also wears her grandmother's jewelry. She likes old things, and things with meaning or history.

I would like to get her a handbag. I might end up asking her what she would like because she's quite particular, but start me off on my research by telling me what you would get in this case. Thank you if you have a suggestion!

I can’t help with brands but I wanted to say I love the sound of your daughter!

DustyLee123 · 08/07/2024 08:30

Why don’t you just give her the money, it sounds like she would enjoy researching the purchase herself.

VerityBridge · 08/07/2024 08:31

Ahh thanks @Jeezitneverends . I think she's fab :)

Agree re: giving her the money. Also, if she’s into charity shops she might prefer to use a reseller rather than buy new.

A trip to TKMaxx usually results in a handbag purchase.

My fashion student daughter who also loves all things black has a Zadig and Voltaire bag that she adores - I think they're very pricy but it may be worth checking Vinted

olderbutwiser · 08/07/2024 08:44

I wouldn’t dream of buying one for her and depriving her the pleasure and agony of choice. Give her a budget and free choice. You will make her very very happy.

SandPoppit · 08/07/2024 08:48

This sounds like a lovely shopping day and lunch out together! If you don't find what she likes, at least she'll have a better idea of what's out there. Then you can give her some £ and let her continue to research and buy on her own.

JaninaDuszejko · 08/07/2024 08:49

She sounds great. Ask her what she wants and look together on vinted or another resale site to get more for your money. Then buy her something small to go alongside it so she still gets a 'surprise'.

Bjorkdidit · 08/07/2024 08:54

She definitely needs to choose it herself. There's thousands of different brands and millions of different 18 YO women. The odds of MN telling you which will be right for your DD are minimal. Plus what size/shape/material is practical and preferable to her, if she wants to carry a bag at all.

Ooh I'd love the gift of being able to choose my own pricey handbag and I think I'd hate being given one, I'd feel I had to pretend to like it knowing the cost. I'm very particular and it sounds like this young lady is too. You obviously have very good intentions but bags are so personal and spending that amount I'd want to be 100% sure she's happy with it.

botemp · 08/07/2024 09:05

When I read your description of your 18yo my first thought was Simone Rocha or Olympia Le Tan but even in the sales you'd struggle to get one on your budget. I agree with others, probably best to ask her or give her the money.

VerityBridge · 08/07/2024 09:32

Yes, I think you're all probably right and that choosing the bag is as much a part of the gift as having it. But I am enjoying looking at the suggestions. That red Fable bag with the fox is just stunning and she loves dark red.

I have also stumbled across a Fendi baguette bag in black fur that is perfect, if not for the price tag - oh, but at that price it might be real fur, in which case no!

There’s nothing you could choose that would outweigh the delight in finding her perfect bag herself.

Don’t give her the money, it’s too easy for that to get swept up in other things. Give her the budget and pay for it when she finds it.

PragmaticDramatic · 08/07/2024 19:32

You could consider a charity shop gift card.

CormorantStrikesBack · 08/07/2024 20:53

Tk maxx have some Moncrief bags reduce from 1k to £200.

Is Coach a good brand?

I've found a pre-loved Coach patent maroon leather bag that I think she'd like. I'm not going to get anything as a surprise, just trying to understand a bit better.
