Birkenstock sizing

I bought some Birkenstocks today. I went to their store so I could try different sizes on. I am usually a 38 (5). However the shop assistant talked me into getting the size 39 because my toes just fit within the raised footbed. They feel comfortable but look a little big to me. I am
do confused as I have heard that people usually size down.

Any insights? Thanks

Dd and I both have birkenstocks and both have gone for our normal size. Perfect fit.

Word of warning they are not comfy to start with but once you've worn them for a while they are the comfiest sandals ever.

HowIrresponsible · 05/07/2024 22:04

I am a 37 and I buy a 36

Person in the shoe shop helped fit them and she said 37 was definitely too big. There aren't meant to be big gaps back and front and there were on my usual size. Your foot is meant to fill the sandals end to end.

Photo is how they are meant to fit.

I'm a 5 and have size 4 birkenstock in regular fit.

I'm a 39 and I always buy a 38 in Birkenstocks

I can’t wear birkenstocks because my feet are different sizes (my left is a 5 and my right is a 4) and they have to fit the foot ‘exactly just so’ as they have that thin ridge at the back and the toe ridges. As PP said, they’re not meant to have space visible on the footbed.

I went for Vibae instead as Toast have started carrying the Moroccan style slippers. So comfy, I just wish they’d get the shoes in now as I don’t want to order internationally.

I wear my usual size, my feet are wide and i have one really randomly long toe.

Im at the stage where my calves get really tired as im still breaking them in.

Thank you. I think I might need to return them as they just seem a bit big. Very odd as the video on their website also says you should have a spare 1 cm from the edge.

I'm a 6 / 6.5 and always buy 39 which I think is a 6?

Ozanj · 05/07/2024 22:54

They’re meant for wide feet. If you have long narrow feet they won’t work. I can’t get them to fit at all.

solsticelove · 05/07/2024 22:56

I always size down one size.

theredspindletree · 05/07/2024 23:16

I am a 5.5 and have fairly slim feet and I buy a 38 and always get ones with buckles so I can tighten them up a bit.

ScottishStardust · 05/07/2024 23:48

I recently bought and returned to size down for the exact reason you mention.

Interesting. I should have followed my own instinct rather than following the assistant’s advice….

They do a narrow fit (they usually the ones left in the sale) but I don’t wear them so I don’t know if its enough to make them wearable for actual narrow feet.

useitorlose · 06/07/2024 03:07

I'm 6.5 and wear 40 narrow. I ordered online but checked sizing and fitting in a Birkenstock store first.

Those of you sizing down - does that mean your toes touch the raised edge?

Not quite.

unsync · 06/07/2024 15:06

This is how they are supposed to fit. Most people I see with them are wearing them too small and too tight. As long as you have the right footbed for your foot's width (narrow or regular), if your Bs are like this, you should be fine.

Yes in agreement with the others, I'm a size down in Birkenstocks.
