Is there such a thing as a stylish waterproof coat?

Just that really. I am off to Canada on holiday and doing lots of outdoorsy stuff. Thanks for any help!

Honestly, I don’t think there is a stylish waterproof coat.

There are coats that are less hideous than others, and I’m sure others will be along with links. Others might also be along to say that it doesn’t matter what it looks like, but this being Style and Beauty I will stick with my stance.

I ended up buying one from M&S that almost looks like a parka. It has normal coat styling details which make it look a little less ‘hiking and day-trip’ than some.

I think recommendations probably depend on what you’re planning on doing in Canada?

I wouldn’t wear a high street jacket for proper hiking, but if you just need something for wandering around a town or similar, then you could get something nice from Rains, Stutterheim, Sweaty Betty etc. If you need something breathable, waterproof and wind proof though I’d look at the outdoors stores - I’m not sure any proper hiking jackets are particularly stylish but if you’re hiking or similar it doesn’t really need to be. And everyone else will be wearing outdoors clothes. Go for something in a neutral/easy to wear colour as it’ll be more wearable than something like bright yellow or green.

Thanks everyone, I am going bear spotting - lots of time waiting and changeable weather. I think you are right @SaltyGod 😂

I have a nice waterproof from Sweaty Betty, but they are unbelievably pricey, and from a technical perspective, there are definitely better waterproofs out there! Mine is definitely waterproof though and it gets compliments, so if you're keen for a pretty coat then I can definitely recommend it. I got mine second hand, I think they go for about £200 new 😬

MidnightPatrol · 03/07/2024 13:46

Stutterheim

EllenLRipley · 03/07/2024 13:46

Yes, the prices are crazy to me when I won't wear it again but I think I might need to suck it up

I bought a jacket from Joules a few years ago, it said waterproof but I didn't expect it to be. It genuinely is waterproof, I still have it now (went to New York in 2019 with it, so it's old) and it's still waterproof. Not sure if they still make it or similar, but I would definitely recommend if they have something you like.

I got a Rab jacket for Canada (BC and Rockies) but we went in May and did the glaciers and stuff. It kinda depends when and where you're going. Also curious to know where you live that you won't wear a waterproof again..!

Stutterheim

These are perfect! thanks so much, I'd never heard of them :)

I live in the North of England and I am a farmer 😂😂I know, I know. I DO have many many waterproof overalls - Dickies thermal suits mostly. But they are literally caked in shit! Outside of farm work I avoid being outside in the rain as far as is humanly possible 😂
My holiday and 'days out' wardrobe is based around relaxing or having fun - it is not a case of not having anything - it is a case of wanting something waterproof and not to look like I'm on my bronze DoE on the holiday pics 😂

Can you buy something in Canada? This is basically bread and butter to the Canadian outdoorsy folks and there are loads of specialist brands which sell more cheaply in Canada and where the shop assistants can help you; am thinking of Patagonia, Haven, Mountain Equipment Company.

Ah fair enough! Do you need warmth or just waterproof? I know you like the Stutterheim but if it gets warm/dry you'll need to carry it. What about this? Then you can just roll it up and pop it in a bag. I can recommend their waterproof trousers too. While I understand wanting to look stylish, if you're doing lots of outdoorsy stuff practicality is key

AreYouShittingMe · 03/07/2024 14:33

Have a look on Vinted. Didrikson are a good brand. Expensive new, but you might get a bargain.
Never worn mine bear watching, but it keeps me warm and dry on the touchlines. That are warm baselayers, and good socks.

ThePoshUns · 03/07/2024 14:35

I treated myself to a Didriksons, waterproof am really pleased with it. Not sure how stylish it is!

minipie · 03/07/2024 14:35

If you like Stutterheim you will also like Rains

Both have nice colours and their waterproof material is nicer than most - matte and flexible.

Sadly the shapes are very straight up and down which does nothing for me

I wouldn’t want to climb a mountain in it, as it is t very breathable.

good for standing around in pouring rain though.

Realdeal1 · 03/07/2024 14:53

I bought a Didrickson coat - its perfect and i wear it over my usual bright clothes. Definitely worth spending money as the cut is great

Oh god I will not be climbing any mountains! Sitting around
We were discussing this the other day - to all the farmers I know the response to the suggestion of a walking holiday is laughably absurd 😂

I’ve got a Stutterheim and a didriksons - both totally waterproof and excellent albeit expensive

😂😂 sorry this has really made me laugh - a farmer from the north of England asking for waterproof suggestions 😅

@EllenLRipley in all seriousness if you want something that’s nice/smarter and doesn’t have to be super practical for hiking, I’d look at Rains, Stutterheim, Sweaty Betty etc and look at Vinted and eBay. You’ll definitely find something that is more on the nice side and not too outdoorsy. Good luck and have fun in Canada!

MaGueule · 03/07/2024 17:10

EllenLRipley Sounds as if we have similar holidays planned. Are you going into the Great Bear Rainforest for bear watching?

I went this waterproof in the end. It’s probably not very stylish, but I liked its neutral colour and the slightly shorter fit was more flattering for me, especially with shorts.

There are some other lovely recommendations on this thread. But I’ve got loads of other coats and didn’t want to spend a fortune. www.superdry.com/products/details/263250/products?sku=20822175003237MO019&source=googleshopping&locale=en-GB&nst=0&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gclid=*
