Office wear for menopausal women who've had enough of your shit

Fizzyq · 22/06/2024 10:39

And who aren't as wealthy as they'd like to be.

Top priority is comfortable and not too hot, because these days it's always too hot, except when its suddenly cold. So I guess layers.

Not too tight, not too shapeless, not too expensive, not too cheap and nasty, not too fussy, not too old ladyish. This seems to rule basically everything out. I'm so sick of looking for stuff and not being able to find anything, and it doesn't help that my patience with anything that isn't straightforward these days is basically zero.

How hard can it be to find some reasonable smart casual (not jeans) stuff to wear to work that won't piss me off all day? Apparently it's impossible. But it can't be, surely.

If you work in an office environment and just can't be arsed with any twattery these days, what do you wear? Please help me before I have some kind of menopausal Falling Down moment and lose my mind.

OP, I wear uniform so have no choice... and it's horrible!
But if I could choose my own clothes I would wear wideleg trousers with sandals or smart trainers. They are so comfy and lightweight.
You can vary your tops but I'd wear a thin longish cardy. I'm tall, size 12.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/06/2024 10:53

Uniqlo are my go to. They have smart trousers with stretch or elastic in the waist back. I'm an apple shape so have several of this sort of style in different colours. If you take it out of the tumble dryer as soon as it's finished and hang it up while still warm it doesn't even need to be ironed.

I agree with Uniqlo. Added bonus that it’s all the same colour palette so it’s like having a capsule wardrobe. Washes brilliantly.

soupfiend · 22/06/2024 11:00

I was on training this week where they had those old school plastic chairs. My trousers were sodden and stuck to the backs of my legs every time I stood up

Horrible

No advice OP just solidarity.

PlumPeony · 22/06/2024 11:04

Vinted - especially if you know exactly what item you'd like. I try on clothes in shops but always check vinted especially if pricier item

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/06/2024 11:08

I also have quite a few tops from East, they are a bit more casual because they tend to have print but a lot of them are flowy which is much cooler than fitted. Some of them are a bit see-through so I wear them with a bratop vest from Uniqlo.

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/06/2024 13:45

If I CBA with the twattery - lol - I go with dresses. Fling em on, easy. Fitted but not tight. Fabrics like silk, cotton, etc, no polyester ever.

Brukli · 22/06/2024 13:53

I have to be fairly smart for work. Not seriously corporate smart, but my look has to say ‘senior’ and ‘professional’.

I have a uniform of trousers, sleeveless silk blouse, relaxed blazer and flat shoes for a big part of the year. I wear trainers to commute. I find it comfortable and easy to shop for. I go for lighter coloured tops and shoes this time of year, darker or jewel colours in winter. Mostly neutrals though.

I switch to a shift dress or smarter midi dress and flat sandals if it gets properly hot. Long-sleeved dress or high neck top and skirt with tights and smart ankle boots if it’s very cold.

Work has to have a ‘uniform’ of sorts for me. I can’t be arsed with faffing and decision making day to day.

Sotiredmjmmy · 22/06/2024 14:06

Jersey midi (or knee length and buy the long length) dresses and a cardi, flats or boots in winter and flats or sandals in summer. Becomes a uniform and is easy and comfortable.

If you go for the better brands it wears fine for all office and professional scenarios, Boden, white stuff etc and can easily dress it up with a jacket if needs be on occasions.

If money is an issue try a few styles, but nice you know which work for you, and then find them on vinted instead.

TheHorneSection · 22/06/2024 14:07

In the winter I wear dresses with tights, boots and a blazer I can throw over if needed.

This summer I’m going for blouses/shirts and trousers. Of all places, Primark have some great chinos for about £15 in a range of dark colours that sit well on the waist, so I bought them in black and navy, and then am browsing around for blouses. I’m relatively petite so am going for slightly bigger sizes I can tuck in or tie at the waist (low down so it still looks fine). Teaming them with either pointed flats or wedges. It’s all cheap, but it still looks smart enough for a relaxed corporate environment.

Nitgel · 22/06/2024 14:07

Uniqlo trousers and linen shirts

These are the chinos, I really impressed with the fit. They won’t last most beyond this year I imagine but that’s fine for me.

Tapered Fit Chinos

These smart-casual trousers are a must in any capsule wardrobe!

Shirts seem to be my go to at the moment. Not too formal - often loose, linen blends, worn with necklaces or pendants to smarten the look up if needed. Then trousers according to mood - shirts go with every kind, even wide legs, if the right cut. COS?

TheShiningCarpet · 22/06/2024 14:22

I wear m and s stretch wide leg jersey black trousers - they are smart for office but comfy with elastic waist.

i wear shirts from yours clothing - sadly not many in cotton which is my preference but cool
enough as loose fit. I have scarves I use as wraps including a wonderful cashmere one which is lightweight but so comforting when needed. I wear trainers as I commute. I have a few lightweight jackets if needed. I don’t give a stuff about fashion!

ItsNotInMyMind · 22/06/2024 14:58

I feel for you. Going into the office became quite an ordeal for me, I hated feeling sweaty and not fresh.

I found culottes were good for the office because they were cool and long enough to hide less than tanned legs.

I went through a phase of wearing these a lot, with a cool top. In autumn I’d wear loafers with them, ankle boots in winter:

Whitestuff and Seasalt midi dresses.

Def. no tights though!

Bosvenning Jeggings

As stylish as jeans but as comfortable as your favourite leggings, our Bosvenning Jeggings are a wardrobe essential. They sit on the natural waist, with a skinny fit through the leg and comfy elasticated waistband. They are perfect to balance out loose...

If you work in an office environment and just can't be arsed with any twattery these days, what do you wear?

Well, whatever the fuck I like and nobody would dare to comment. Obviously 😁
But more specifically - elasticated waist linen balloon trousers, various t-shirt/shirt/cardigan layers on top. Or dress and leggings. Or slim stretchy cotton trousers with a long shirt.

Vast majority sourced from eBay or charity shops.

For new, I might buy in the sales of cos, Finisterre, toast, Seasalt (they also have a good eBay outlet)

Dappy55 · 22/06/2024 16:26

H and M lovely baggy linen trousers and sandals or flats

colouringindoors · 22/06/2024 16:31

Following with the same question... I've got some cheap linen shirts from HM and nice 3/4 length chino type trousers from Marks last year (Wide flat elastic for back waist - v effective). Works ok temp wise, but does feel Very middle-aged mumsy....

Abitorangelooking · 22/06/2024 16:32

I wear Toms flat canvas shoes (very comfy) comes in lots of colours, linen blend wide trousers. I got them from Tesco and liked them so much I went back and bought three more pairs. Slash neck t shirt with elbow length sleeves from Markies. Cardigans from Vinted. It is my self created uniform but just all so easy to wear and I think it looks quite chic.

Phineyj · 22/06/2024 16:39

This is very specific but Seasalt's Chapelle dress has got me through two hot sweaty summers at school. Cotton, great coverage, no need to iron, lots of prints.

RiverF · 22/06/2024 16:43

For summer I have a "uniform" of linen trousers and fitted cotton tshirts with leather trainers.

Boden linen trousers are good, but Next are OK and about 1/3 the price. They have some nice red wide leg ones this year.

YourCalmCyanPombear · 22/06/2024 16:46

One of my absolute favourites right now is this Elegant Women's Summer Top. It's perfect for the office and super comfortable. The fabric is great for hot days, and it looks really nice too. Fairly affordable ...

But yeah it is slightly hot so keeping cool is the main thing aha.

Not sure the swearing is strictly necessary

Kind Regards

Noseybookworm · 22/06/2024 17:32

Loose wide leg linen trousers/mid length linen wrap skirt?
Casual shirts in breathable fabrics (cotton/linen/bamboo) vest top/cami underneath so shirt worn like a jacket?

Corksoles · 22/06/2024 18:01

Wide trousers - cotton, linen, weird viscose stuff but it feels floaty.

I hate short sleeves so long sleeve tshirts and silk/linen shirts. Crew neck cotton cardigans in bright colours. Cotton blazers from Whistles that go in the machine for washing.

Flat comfy shoes - mostly camper ballet flats. Canvas trainers.

Mostly Cos, Arket, Jigsaw, Whistles, Baukjen. Mostly in the sales.
