Cheeky Returns Question

A dress has arrived today from a big retailer that I want you to keep. However this dress is now reduced considerably in the sale.
I have ordered the cheaper sale one and am going to return the one that has just arrived.

My question is: will they know which exact dress I return? Can I wear the dress today and return the sale one, as if it's the one that arrived today when the sale one arrives? I can put the sale one in the packaging of the full price one.
It's John Lewis if that helps.

They won't know.

I’ve done it and felt absolutely no shame. Every penny and all that.

In no way is that cheeky. Many times I’ve contacted a retailer after receiving an item that was subsequently discounted (like the day after ordering), asking them if they’ll honour the discount, and they usually do. It saves the additional cost to them of posting out a second item and processing the return, because what you’re suggesting is entirely legit but is much more of a faff for you and for them.

Thank you both. I'll do it.

I'd contact John Lewis swiftly and they will almost certainly refund the difference to save on having to return and then send out a sale one. Best of luck x

I've literally just done this with Zalando on their live chat. A pair of jeans reduced from 66 to 57 before I even received my order. I asked if they would honour the discount to save me having to return and reorder, and they said that was fine.
