Teen boy smart casual

My 16yo son has an event to attend with smart casual dress code. How does this translate for a teenager? He has nothing in between extremely casual and 6th form suits. Top, bottoms and footwear please. Thanks.

My 17 year old wears a short sleeved shirt open over a plain black or white t shirt and chinos. I'd describe that as smart casual.

Black jeans and a light blue or white polo shirt probably by BOSS or Calvin Klein with leather trainers is what my DS would wear

Invisimamma · 21/06/2024 18:57

Dark jeans, spotlessly clean trainers (not white) and a polo or shirt, something like Boss, Lyle and Scott or Ralph Lauren.

shardlakem · 21/06/2024 19:55

Chinos & a shirt, deffo not a t shirt even if it's a polo shirt

WASZPy · 21/06/2024 20:15

DS goes to a public school (for various reasons- not actually our social set). They ask for older pupils to have chinos, matching coloured shoes and a shirt to be worn open at the neck (with cuff links 🙄) available for smart casual events like their business networking things- so I suppose that is posh code?

samlovesdilys · 21/06/2024 20:42

Blue button-down shirt, chinos, brogues...it's not exciting but will be accepted as smart casual in most situations in my mind...

Littletreefrog · 21/06/2024 20:46

I think it depends on your social circle and who is likely to be at the event. Because where I am chinos and a shirt would be smart.

Smart casual would be smart black jeans and a polo shirt. Formal.would ve a suit. Black tie would be a tux.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 21/06/2024 21:02

What is the event and who is hosting? Assuming it's over the summer,
I would say a polo shirt or short sleeved shirt with chinos or dark jeans and leather trainers/boat shoes

chipfork · 21/06/2024 21:33

Thank you all so much! Normally in trousers that look like pyjama bottoms. Chinos, short sleeve shirt and boat shoes are ordered. He will look like a junior doctor which will fit the bill 😊

Another vote for chinos with a shirt, maybe a striped or check shirt depending on what he’s comfortable wearing.

CurlewKate · 21/06/2024 21:43

You can be smart casual without labels. Just saying....

mummamagic · 17/06/2025 11:21

What do you reckon for an 11-yr-old boy? Could he get away with shorts and a button-down shirt for smart casual in the summer, or are full length trousers de rigueur?

Comefromaway · 17/06/2025 11:28

Chinos and a polo shirt. The brands I see on similar age lads range from Ralph Lauren, Belstaff & Fred Perry (from Vinted) to Lyle & Scott & Weekend Offender (though I would avoid the latter brand for this kind of event. Boss is for the older age group.

Definitely could get away with nice tailored shorts and a polo shirt at 11.

From about 8 to adult, mine always wore chinos and a navy linen jacket. With either a T shirt or proper shirt, school shoes or Converse, depending on the level of formality required. Even a tie on occasion.
