Pregnant Bridesmaid Help

One of my lovely bridesmaids has just told she’s expecting. It was a surprise to everyone but is lovely news and I’m so pleased for her. My wedding is in 10 weeks and I obviously still want her as part of our special day, she also still wants to be involved. The bridesmaid dress will obviously not fit her now and we have no idea what size she will be in 10 weeks time. I’m sure this is a common enough situation but has anyone experienced something similar and have advice on how to organise a dress in the circumstances? I’m not fussy about things being too matchy or within a theme, though my other bridesmaids will be wearing the same dresses. She’s one of my best friends and I absolutely adore her, I am a bridesmaid at her wedding and she will be mine so I just want to find a solution to make her comfortable and happy. Just to add, she absolutely still wants to be a bridesmaid too before anyone suggests otherwise.

How many weeks is she? is this her first?

with my first I didn’t start to look pregnant until I was approx 26 weeks and wore all my own normal sized clothes until the . She may be lucky and might not change shape in 10 weeks time.

ASOS generally have loads of bridesmaid-type maternity dresses so maybe have a look on there?

Instantcustard · 16/06/2024 11:35

What is the style of the dress she has and how many weeks is she? As others have said, it is not a given that she has to change dresses. I got married at 18 weeks and did not wear a maternity dress as I didnt have a bump.

Have you already bought the dresses? How far along will she be? Could you buy the next size up and have it altered.
If the dresses haven't been bought, some brands have maternity options in the same colour/style.

Something "flowy" in the same colour as others?

Ever pretty have quite a few. Attached an example.

Thank you all very much for you help! To answer some questions.

It is her second and she didn’t get very big with her first so am hoping sizing up may be an option. There is not much give in the dresses that we have already bought so may have to order an extra, in a larger size and hope for the best. I may also order a flowy/ looser fit as a backup in case she does get bigger than we thought. She will be around 20 weeks at the wedding.

I don’t want to cause her any additional stress as she already feels bad for the unexpected news so wanted to have a bit of a plan to alleviate some of her worries!

The dress we had picked and ordered unfortunately doesn’t have a maternity option but I am happy for her to wear anything. I know she won’t want to stand out too much either though so trying to find something appropriate. I’ve also emailed the shop we bought the dresses from for some advice. There are lots of options to consider here though so thank you all very much. I’ve never been pregnant so it’s not something I’m knowledgeable about!

Another option could be that she does a speech or is an usher instead- IF she doesn't feel comfortable being in the spotlight. She could obviously still help with 'bridesmaidy' things, but wouldn't feel pressured to fit into the same dress etc. My pregnant cousin was an usher- greeted people, handed out order of service at the door, took umbrellas and gave out blow bubbles at the end to use outside (no petals/rice/confetti allowed). Its just another option for her to be involved.

I think because it’s her second she might show more than she did with her first. Unless she has super tight tummy muscles!
hope you find a plan B and enjoy your day

My neice had two pregnant bridesmaids - she knew, we didn't. They had dresses that 'didn't show' - I think they were under 14 weeks. and we now have lovely two girls. The bridesmaids all chose their dresses within the same colour scheme....all looked stunning

sawnotseen · 16/06/2024 16:02

And, to begin with, they were all different sizes and chose dresses to suit their shape and felt comfortable in.
