Although the summer so far has been disappointing!

@gingercat02 I don't think Meghan was prepared to become another Sophie while Kate became Queen. She was ambitious and capable.

I think she was also savvy enough to realise that although there was fabulous wealth, it would never be hers. If they were still 'in', Charles would be footing their bills, then William would take on their expenses when he became King and eventually George would. And if you fall out with them for whatever reason you risk being cut off financially even if you haven't done anything wrong.

Papergirl1968 · 26/06/2024 20:35

Huge frilly shoulder thing is a given with Max, @smilesy. She doesn’t do under-stated 😂

ARichtGoodDram · 26/06/2024 20:36

It’s very rare for the royals to cut each other off financially.

Andrew is the obvious example, but even look back at the storm around three Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and their rent. The Queen covered that for many years after even though at that point he had taken himself out of the line of succession by marrying a Catholic and was by no means a full time working royal.

Funding the wider family is just something they do. And in Harry and meghan’s position as son of a King they were never going to be sent down to the council to declare themselves homeless.

Funding others is the pay off for everything being left sovereign to sovereign (or consort to sovereign) and avoiding IHT. None of them will stop funding the others and risk losing that.

I love the dress in that image with the sort of wrap shoulder/neck effect..

The loss of Andrew, Harry and Meghan will be a loss at least 600 engagements a year (roughly).

Charles can cover that as along with W & C he’s got Camilla, Anne and the Gloucesters plus a fit and healthy Edward and Sophie.

For William it’s a much bigger loss. He’d have been expecting to have 4 full timers and 3 who started full time then became part timers. The age gap between Charles and his brothers would have made them, and Sophie, a great bridge for William while his children grew up as they’d have been the Kent’s and Gloucesters of his reign.

I don’t really understand this argument. Andrew wasn’t doing lots of engagements before his fall from grace as far as I am aware. Harry was not doing any engagements before he got engaged as far as I remember. He obviously represented Invictus but that was it. I don’t see how either of them are a great loss. Meghan was an add on and she was a disaster in any case.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 26/06/2024 20:41

I wouldn't say that anything in the Monarchy needs turning around.

They are doing perfectly well as they are and have weathered a lot of serious storms exceedingly well.

@LivelyBlake I think the British Royal family has to cover a lot more than the Scandinavian families - the UK is vastly larger in terms of population, so it stands to reason that there will be a much bigger demand on time/efforts.

I'm straying very close to contentious discussion here, so I won't say anything else, but it's quite clear that Meghan absolutely did not/does have what it takes to work within the royal family, however capable she might have been on paper. It's much better that they left, although it's left the family in dire straits for the next 20 odd years once the elder members are no longer with us.

Meh. I'm going back to thinking and talking about jewellery. The Duchess of Gloucester was well festooned at the state dinner, wasn't she!

Maireas · 26/06/2024 20:42

I think there are lots of threads on Harry, Meghan and Andrew. Whereas we often chat a bit about the royals, this is really a thread about style and beauty and we tend to avoid controversy. It's a bit of a haven, really!
Thank you 😊

@AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras - Birgitte really has some gorgeous jewels, probably from her mother in law.

When the plan to “slim” down and not include any of Charles nieces and nephews it would have been expected that Andrew, Harry and his wife (obviously not know at that point) would be full time working royals for William’s reign. Andrew for part of it until he became older and a current Kent/Gloucester type and Harry and his wife full time.

The slimmed down plan was never only William, Kate, Edward and Sophie.

Thats all I meant. Nothing controversial intended. Sorry.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 26/06/2024 20:45

Harry has his own money. Millions. And will get more when his next inheritance comes through. They would never have had to worry about money.

No indeed she does not 😆. I’m just finding that one a bit random even for Max 😂

Yes, sorry! Noted and will move on (NOT to any of those other threads...can't be dealing with that full-on madness 😁😁).

SqueakyDinosaur · 26/06/2024 20:50

Those Leti pics are excellent - so many lovely outfits. I like colour clashes so I like the pink/red one near the top (possibly the only photo in which Max looks a bit anaemic and washed-out!).

LivelyBlake · 26/06/2024 20:50

I notice that Sophie is not at the dinner at Guildhall tonight with the Japanese emperor. The Duke of Edinburgh is here on his own.

eggandonion · 26/06/2024 20:51

Will the titles of Duke of Kent and Gloucester be passed down to heirs? Or do they go back in the cupboard for a couple of decades?

Her Cartier Indian tiara from Princess Marie Louise is stunning too.
I think she was the Duke’s godmother. There’s an adorable photo of Birgitte with the eldest of her daughters and the toddler has the tiara on.

They both have sons so the title will pass on. There will be no HRH and they’ll not be royal dukedoms anymore.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 26/06/2024 20:58

@Maireas yes she's got so many lovely pieces. As a Dane I'm quite pleased that a fellow Dane has done/is doing such a good job. She and the Duke weren't supposed to be working Royals either but that's what fate decided.

I can't seem to find photos just now but she wore 3 brooches to the front and 2 at the back, at yesterday's dinner. I'd love to have a rummage through her collection - wouldn't that be a fun dressing-up game!

I love that dress too. Great retrospective. I do (mainly) love Leti's style.

Last night's place setting. I didn't realise Charles' cypher would be on the plates.

Ooh. Will that be new plates or can they take the cypher off and replace it, does anyone know?

Royal Brillo pads ?😉

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 26/06/2024 22:13

assuming they get new plates, can you imagine the piles of former monarchs' plates they must have?

I suppose like Michelin starred restaurants do, they will have to refresh the state banquet crockery from time to time, so a change of monarch seems a good time to do it.
