Not worth buying summer clothes now?

Just that.

We're now mid June and I saw someone yesterday wearing gloves on a dog walk round the park. I wish I'd worn mine.

I've bought a couple of pairs of trousers , a couple of T shirts, a linen jumper and an ANYDAY dress that was in the sale (and very cheap.)

I've yet to wear any of them other than the dress when we had a hot spell a few weeks ago.

I'm not going anywhere hot for a holiday.

On top of this, I have seen so little that I like anyway.

I rarely wear or buy summer clothes unless going on a holiday! I bought a few pairs of light trousers in Matalan and some tshirts and that's my (just-incase) summer wardrobe sorted 😆

Nicelynicelyjohnson · 10/06/2024 11:21

I was thinking the same thing this morning, while wondering if I might need to crack on the heating to take the chill off the morning.
I got a couple of new tops I can wear any weather, and enough summer clothes from previous years to get me through any sudden hot spells.
I am saving my money for some new autumn clothes, they are always more expensive but can be worn a lot longer.

justjudy · 10/06/2024 11:24

I'm not buying anything new. I have enough summery things for my holiday abroad this month and for the uk summer if it ever arrives. At the moment, it feels like there won't be the opportunity to wear shorts and T-shirts at all.

AtomicBlondeRose · 10/06/2024 11:26

I’m going abroad for a week, and I have enough summer clothes for months that I predict will once again get packed away unworn at the end of the season. All these sleeveless tops and shorts in the shops - who the hell is wearing those in the UK this year? I’m in trousers, a t-shirt and blazer and I’m frankly cold.

socks1107 · 10/06/2024 11:28

I panic bought last month after reading summer will be warm so probably have stuff I may not even wear now!

TuesdayWhistler · 10/06/2024 11:28

It's not even summer yet, doesn't start till 20/21st June.

Got another 10days.
July and August I reckon will be hot this year, based on the very scientific modelling I do that involves NASA and Meteorologists from 92 countries.. (nah, i just reckon irs gonna be hot)

I need to get shopping and find some summer stuff.

Since when?

The 21st is the longest day .

24th June is midsummer's day.

I keep my clothes for ages so if I see something I buy it. Get my summer clothes out early May and they go away early October I just like the change of colours etc.

TheFairyCaravan · 10/06/2024 11:33

I bought a Summer dress from Sainsburys in March time because things have a habit of going out of stock there and a couple of pairs of linen trousers. And I’ve bought some t-shirt dresses from Matalan to throw on when we go to lunch on holiday. I’m not anything else, there’s no point.

Since forever?

Meteorological Stummer starts June 1st because the weather people split year up that way.

But the Earth tilt and orbit around the sun is what causes seasons and thats the astrological seasons and astrologically, summer doesn't start until 20th of June, aka Summer Solstice which is actually the longest day, and runs until Autumn Equinox which this year is 22nd september.

I think there is a difference between meteorological and astronomical summer, which can get confusing

Meteorological:

  • Autumn: September 1 - November 30
  • Winter: December 1 - February 28
  • Spring: March 1 - May 31
  • Summer: June 1 - August 30

Whereas astronomical more is based on the solstices (longest / shortest days) and the equinox (equal day length) which in the UK is between 20th and 23rd on these months:

  • Autumn Equinox: September
  • Winter Solstice: December
  • Vernal Equinox: March
  • Summer Solstice: June

I live in Scotland. Unless I am going abroad on holiday summer clothes are rarely necessary - the ones I already own are seldom worn.

Whichever way you look at it, we are now into summer. I had the heating on last night.

It's a fashion thread not a geography lesson!

Fully aware of the science.

Haha, I was just thinking that - why does everything on MN have to turn into a lecture?!

Everyone knows what you mean OP. I'm the same, had a jumper on my this morning and still feel cold..

TuesdayWhistler · 10/06/2024 11:48

Op LITERALLY asked.. Hmm

WhatNoRaisins · 10/06/2024 11:48

I only buy summer stuff that I can also wear with tights and a warm layer in winter.

Petrine · 10/06/2024 12:11

I agree with you OP. I was going to buy some strappy sandals yesterday but have decided not to for obvious reasons.

Wearing winter clothes or braving summer things and feeling cold all day is par for the course at the moment. I hope things improve but looking at the forecast it gives little hope that it will.

MidnightPatrol · 10/06/2024 12:12

A few of the brands I am subscribed to have sent out v good discounts this week.

I suspect they are struggling to shift their stock.

Not much point buying summer clothes when it’s cold and wet all the time.

RuthW · 10/06/2024 12:15

I never wear summer clothes until the end of june. I then wear for about three months.

Rockschooldropout · 10/06/2024 12:16

I haven’t bought any new summer clothes .. still very much in jumpers - my winter boots are looking a bit sad and I’m actually considering buying another pair as it’s done nothing but rain

Uncooperativefingers · 10/06/2024 12:23

Where does everyone live that's constantly complaining of cold weather?

In the West Mids it's been a pretty normal run of late spring/early summer weather. Some hot days, some warm and some a bit chilly. We had the paddling pool out last weekend, it was scorching!

I don't buy loads of new summer clothes every year, but I've bought a few nice bits as usual. I need some.new sandals though and can't find any that are quite right

Nopet · 10/06/2024 12:23

Regardless of when summer officially starts people cannot argue that the weather so far has been a lot cooler than normal.
Definitely cannot remember a summer where it has been so cold ,central heating has been on a few times recently.
Have only worn shorts once when we had a very hot day back in mid May .
Today in SE has been so cold ,windy and miserable, like it has been for bloody weeks.
My summer wardrobe has not even been looked at yet ! Retailers must be struggling so much!

PollyPeep · 10/06/2024 12:25

Was thinking this today. I bought some cute summer clothes that won't fit my kids next year (kids are under 5), and I'm sad to think they might not ever get to wear them! As we sit in the same jumpers and trousers we've been wearing for EIGHT MONTHS 😭😭
