Not worth buying summer clothes now?

GingerbicciesPlease · 10/06/2024 11:15

Just that.

We're now mid June and I saw someone yesterday wearing gloves on a dog walk round the park. I wish I'd worn mine.

I've bought a couple of pairs of trousers , a couple of T shirts, a linen jumper and an ANYDAY dress that was in the sale (and very cheap.)

I've yet to wear any of them other than the dress when we had a hot spell a few weeks ago.

I'm not going anywhere hot for a holiday.

On top of this, I have seen so little that I like anyway.

I'm okay with this weather to be fair. It's not too hot or cold and there is no mention of drought.

I'm not going to buy any summer clothes either now. Even though I have a feeling in my bones we will get some good days over Summer. Just not enough to warrent any spending.

Portfun24 · 10/06/2024 12:28

I've not bought anything. I'm working from home today and had to put the heating on. Our work office is always freezing even in the height of summer as its an old building and sits in an area that's always shaded so always have to wear a cardigan in work too. It really doesn't feel like mid June.

henlake7 · 10/06/2024 12:33

Im wearing parachute pants and a cosy jumper at the moment....that I bought in a sale. TBH I usually shop out of season coz I prefer getting things at sale prices if possible.

The weather doesnt really bother my clothing choices too much either. I would never, ever wear shorts so dont buy them and vest tops, tees can be layered so still safe to buy whatever the weather!
Also rarely out of baseball boots or trainers so no sandal envy!

Must suck if you are a shorts/floaty dress type person though....I hope you get some nice weather soon!😉

KennaThomas · 10/06/2024 12:33

It's always worth buying summer clothes for me. I buy summer clothes all year around and later them up according to the weather. I get overheated very quickly even when it's cold so prefer to wear lots of light thin layers so I always wear a "summer" outfit as my base outfit then add things on top to be weather appropriate.

It has been fairly mild in the Midlands for the last month with warmer days and very cool nights.

Hopefully it will warm up after the Summer Solstice.

@TuesdayWhistler I asked (not 'literally') about clothes, not for an explanation of when summer officially starts or ends.

FWIW we have had hail stones this morning.

It’s a bit early to write off summer just yet!

Thanks for tagging.

I said:
"It's not even summer yet, doesn't start till 20/21st June."

You said:
"Since when?"

Literally asking Since when has Summer Solstice been the beginning of Summer.

Hope that helps.

Go well

you know, a couple of weeks ago there was a thread about holiday clothes and lots of posters were sneery about the idea/concept of a holiday wardrobe. “Just wear your normal summer clothes on holiday” was the general theme- well sorry but I’m wearing thick jeans, a long sleeved t shirt, a hoodie and thick socks. I’m not wearing that on the Med this summer, I will be buying a dress or two to wear out for dinner on holiday, maybe some new sandals, and I hope I get to make them my “normal summer clothes” but unlikely, looking out the window.

(honestly feels like for the last couple of summers, the “wear your normal summer clothes on holiday” is akin to telling someone going skiing to wear their normal winter wardrobe.)

Exactly! Comments about the timing of summer seem relevant to the original comment.
May was the warmest on record but wetter than average which obviously has a big bearing on clothing choices. And it's certainly colder than average today for June.
My main challenge is footwear when it's mild but wet. Really fed up with boots and can't wear any of my summer canvas trainers.

Soccermumamir · 10/06/2024 13:57

I dont buy many summer clothes each year. A few bits and that's me done. Today I was back in my ripped jeans, jumper, boots and lightweight scarf. I'm always cold unless I'm direct sunshine 😆

TheOGCCL · 10/06/2024 14:11

I always like to look at the summer displays - the bikinis, the beach bags, sunnies, bright prints, shorts - but rarely buy. I run v cold and do not tend to holiday in hot places so just seems to all be for a fantasy lifestyle someone else is living.

OMG same! When we do go abroad I prefer it when it's cooler. I don't like the heat and also run cold. My favourite time is Autumn. I love the weather and the clothes I will spend a fortune on lol 😆

Regardless of when summer officially starts people cannot argue that the weather so far has been a lot cooler than normal.
Definitely cannot remember a summer where it has been so cold ,central heating has been on a few times recently.
Have only worn shorts once when we had a very hot day back in mid May .
Today in SE has been so cold ,windy and miserable, like it has been for bloody weeks.
My summer wardrobe has not even been looked at yet ! Retailers must be struggling so much!

Actually it has been slightly warmer than average but the rain and cooler winds have made it feel colder.

But to avoid the lecture I went out this morning.and it was very warm until I got into the wind and then it felt cold.

EmeraldRoulette · 10/06/2024 14:53

I think I’m all right with what I have

Im losing weight and have two pairs of linen trousers that are too loose, yay

but no point replacing them

unless a sudden heatwave comes up in June - weather forecasts are now unreliable but even then, it seems unlikely - it’s the 10th and no sign of summer weather

let’s say there’s only July and August that 25c weather might happen

so jeans will do, I might be a bit hot but oh well

barely even worn t shirts yet and not worn vest tops at all

no shopping for me!

RoobarbAndMustard · 10/06/2024 14:57

There is likely to be huge volumes of clothing and sandals in the summer sales this year. Unless we suddenly get a long heatwave (not looking likely in the next 2 weeks according to BBC Weather).
So stock up for next year.

HandsDown84 · 10/06/2024 15:10

I always think this then we get a 10 day sweaty heatwave and I don't have enough light floaty stuff for a week at work.

I'm basically just going to rotate 2 pairs of wide leg lineny trousers and the dresses I've already got. Plus the Tevas I bought last summer (and wore about twice). I understand what the OP means - in some years we've had an April or even March hot spell in the SW. This year, nada.

Where does everyone live that's constantly complaining of cold weather?

In the West Mids it's been a pretty normal run of late spring/early summer weather. Some hot days, some warm and some a bit chilly. We had the paddling pool out last weekend, it was scorching!

I don't buy loads of new summer clothes every year, but I've bought a few nice bits as usual. I need some.new sandals though and can't find any that are quite right

Scorching last weekend???! Wish I was in the West Midlands you're in lol. Sat was quite nice but was max 17 degrees and got v chilly in the evening as I was out gardening til 9pm and really felt cold when I came in. Sunday was a washout and very cold around 13-14

Yeh hailstones today and it's currently 12 degrees. People really seem to experience weather differently!! Warmest May someone said? I thought it was very cold this year. May bank hols I usually start wearing sandals and lighter clothes . Haven't even got them out from under the bed yet this year. And come on June is summer isn't it???

dudsville · 10/06/2024 15:41

I was struggling in May to work out what to wear as I was just so ready to ditch the winter clothes. Today I've completely given in and am comfortable in cords and a wool jumper and wool socks. There are some summer dresses I would really love to buy but it seems pointless given I have plenty and there's no weather for it!

I live in South Yorkshire.

Not yesterday, but the Sunday before, was fine weather but definitely not scorching. I wouldn’t have wanted to have been in a paddling pool. Since then we’ve been lucky to hit 16 degrees, it’s been windy and showery.

Jellycats4life · 10/06/2024 15:54

Yeah, it’s not worth it. Every summer is the same I find. 90% of the time the weather is mediocre - cloudy, cool, sometimes rainy. As I type the sun has come out, but it’s 15 degrees outside, I’m wearing a hoodie indoors and my hands are freezing.

I actually don’t particular enjoy hot weather, but I’d rather feel summer heat than be freezing my arse off indoors with the lights on because it’s so dark!

Precipice · 10/06/2024 15:56

Well, depends. If you have clothes from previous years, no need to buy any. If there's something you're missing and you see something you do like, buy that. If you don't wear it this year, you'll wear it in coming years.

Personally, I will be expecting to wear summer clothes for part of summer. I wore summer clothes already this year; it was pretty warm in May in SE for about a week and hot for a brief time I was in Central Europe in April.

I've never experienced a summer where I don't wear summer clothes (shorts, sleeveless top). I will be very surprised if this is the first such (thinking about July-August, since I expect to dress how I'm dressing now in June generally: trousers and a short-sleeve).

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 10/06/2024 16:07

I went to New Look today and saw some lovely summer stuff but decided to save my money - been sunny one minute and torrential downpour the next here in the SE

lindyloo57 · 10/06/2024 17:13

Its 8 degrees here in norwich this morning so I'm in thermals again, have brought a couple pair of linen trousers, I find trousers hard to fit as I have a size 12 waist and a size 10 hips, so when I find a pair that fits well I buy two pairs, still looking for a pair of wide leg jeans that suit me , I'm petite, so nearly always have to cut some inches off, brought two waistcoats one from m &s one from tesco, and a sale dress from french connection john lewis site , it's half price , black with a shimmer thread running through, it's a shift style short sleeves, I thought handy to wear Christmas or a meal out anytime with thin black top under. With or without tights.

MrsCarson · 10/06/2024 17:56

My summer wardrobe is very small.
A thinner pair of trousers and a few tee shirts. The rest of the time I'm in jeans and a long sleeve cotton top If it warms up I'll put a pair of Birkies with no socks on and will be cool enough. Yesterday and today I've been in wool socks, trainers, jeans and long sleeves, I needed my coat both days.
