What do you wear if you have very good legs, but the rest of you is less good?

Just that! I am in my early 50s, legs very good thanks to walking everywhere, midsection a disaster thanks to menopausal belly. I wear shorts and cropped trousers for everyday, but what do I wear for semi-casual that can show off my best feature? The shops only seem to have baggy oversized midi dresses.

I tried on some mini dresses and skirts, but they look wrong, somehow. I am all in favour of wearing what you want at any age, but they still look wrong on me? Also, I am scared of flashing someone on the Tube ( could wear shorts underneath I guess).

There are lots of denim skirts around, maybe you could find one that is nearer to knee-length rather than mini. Or the longer side of mini, rather than bum length. I think it can depend on the width of your hips and thighs so that the balance is right, a more athletic frame can go shorter without looking too obvious. Something like this might work, too.
But I can see there is not much in the way of shorter dresses around at the moment, although there are loads of shorts to choose from.

I have long lean legs, slim hips but a bit of a tummy. I wear shorts that flare out a, but so look almost like a skirt (Uniqlo) I have big boobs too and wear a lot of shirt dress, they flatter my boobs, help conceal my tummy and show of my legs. I used to love denim skirts but I've come to realise that they make me look very blocky and square, the only ones I'll contemplate are the ones with buttons down the front (1970s style) as they help hide the tummy. For jeans I'll squeeze into the smaller size so my hips, bum and legs fit well. Mango are my go to for jeans. Pleats are a big no, wrap dresses work well for my tummy and boobs, front wrap style skirts are good. A line skirts are good but not ones which flare out too much. The secret is to have a slim fit on the hips then a slight flare. For me anyway.

*flare out a bit

The last time I went out I wore this, I had a lot of compliments. I'm 46 and a size 14. I sized down to a large.

MANGO.

I wear shift dresses in linen ( M& S do some, as do Jaeger), about knee length on me (5’5”) above the knee skirts a-line, cord or denim, or shirt dresses, leaving the lower buttons open so my legs naturally show as I move.
i look pretty good in shorts , if my legs have some colour.

I avoid high rise anything. I am basically the same shape as you, in my 60s .

Thanks all. So few shift dresses in the shops. Might look for a knee length denim skirt or wear shirt dresses unbuttoned. I don't have big boobs either. Mostly, I look like a python that has swallowed a football!

I quite like that Hush dress. I am going to a posh bar tonight and am wearing a navy midi dress for lack of anything better.

Hmmmm....I also walk everywhere...why don't I have lovely legs!

I second shift dresses! I think sleeveless shift dresses black or navy look very chic in summer and the dark colour can balance out the amount of skin on display.

Duckies · 10/06/2024 17:01

And you can find lots on Vinted as they have been less in fashion with the move to longer prairie styles.

I am an apple; all my body fat has gone to my waist in menopause. I would actually prefer to be more proportionate!

I am not very good with Vinted but will have a look thanks @Duckies

I find it helps if you filter by

  • fabric e.g. linen
  • a few brands that you think might have what you need e.g. m&s, Jaeger, next
  • condition
