Birkenstock fans, what style//material do you wear? Which are the most comfortable?

I'm looking to get some birkies for my summer hols. I would like to know which are the best for walking, and are the most comfortable in terms of break in time. I'm very blister prone!

I've already tried some on and worked out my size (4 regular) so just need to choose which ones to buy.

I have three slider types, one in a metallic stiff leather with double buckle and one in a soft brown leather with double buckle and one in a plastic coated material single buckle then I have a pair that buckle round the ankle.

They are all pretty comfy to walk in apart from the plastic coated single buckle material. These tend to be a bit looser and rub, plus they offer the least support.

If you are wanting stability and comfort I’d opt for the ones that buckle round the ankle. They are very adjustable so shouldn’t cause any rubbing if you get them right.

just realised I may win the prize of the post with the word ‘buckle’ used the most haha

I have 3 pairs of Arizonas and a (new) pair of Boston clogs. All extremely comfortable.

mogtheexcellent · 07/06/2024 18:23

I only wear madrid. I hate toe posts and get blisters easily so other styles not suitable.

Matildahoney · 07/06/2024 18:24

My leather Arizona's have cut my feet to shreds on first wear, 3 weeks later I still have the scabs and have scarred quite badly.

BrightInMyNorthernSky · 07/06/2024 18:29

Gold Arizonas. On their third year. I love them!

UnimaginableWindBird · 07/06/2024 18:30

I loved my Floridas, but they don't make them any more. I found Arizonas too floppy and my feet didn't feel secure, so I did research and decided on Mayaris. The toe loop makes them feel more secure and while I generally hate the feeling of flip flops and things between my toes, they were fine. I got the cheaper birkoflor version, but I would probably buy again in leather.

I walked 10 miles in mine a couple of weekends ago, and I am prone to foot pain.

WhereAreWeNow · 07/06/2024 18:30

I swear by Mayaris. I've never had blisters with them.

BigPandaTinyDragon · 07/06/2024 18:32

I’ve just got Mayaris and am finding them the best summer shoes I’ve had for years. I like that they’re a bit less clumpy than some of the other styles too.

Sgtmajormummy · 07/06/2024 18:33

Mayari (crossover toe strap) from May to September every year for the past 15!
They hug my feet better and don’t make my toes overextend like toe posts do. Birkoflor vegan leather is awful and too expensive for what it is (plastic) so now I usually buy Grünland brand which is still leather and does a couple of summers.
I wear similar clogs style as slippers in the winter.

PuppyMonkey · 07/06/2024 18:33

I don’t find them comfortable enough to walk long distances in tbh. I wear mine round house or going to work sometimes but not the best for walking imho. Arizonas.

Highlighta · 07/06/2024 18:36

Both of my pairs are the birko-flor. I tried the leather ones on and I just knew I didn't have the wearing in period in me as they hurt just on the try on. The ones with the back strap (Milano) were the worse imo.

I have the Sydney and Mayari and have worn them with no issues. Although both took a few wears to feel just right.

If you have patience to wear in the leather then go for those.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 07/06/2024 19:44

I can't wear them, find them so uncomfortable. Fitflop Remi are my go to sandals for walking, like walking on air, and Merrills for off roading

supercalafragilisticexpealidocious · 07/06/2024 19:53

I only wear Arizonas (and Boston clogs at home). They are soooo comfy and supportive. Best ones in my view are the leather ones (as opposed to the suede) as the leather keeps their shape.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/06/2024 20:12

Mayari in Mocha. They last me about 5 summers, and I replace them immediately when they wear out. I'm on my 3rd pair. I'm normally a 42/43, but I'm a 41 in Birkies.

DaveWatts · 07/06/2024 20:32

Arizonas and Boston clogs here. I prefer the non-leather Arizonas as they don't need breaking in. My absolute favourites are the shearling ones but they're no good for summer 😂

FriedAir · 08/06/2024 17:53

Thanks all I'm going to try the mayari, just debating whether to get the birko or leather...

I have 'vegan leather' Arizonas and they didn't need any breaking in at all. They're pale pink and easy to sponge clean.
