I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

I don’t see teenagers as the arbiters of style. Yes, they can be ahead of trends but loads of people aren’t stylish including many teenagers. And a stylish 20 yr old tends to still be a stylish 40 yr old or 60 yr old.

I also think it’s nice for teens to have their own trends. As an 90s tween/teen we dressed very different from our parents & there were also different trends rather than everyone following one look & individual shops had their own distinct handwriting. Something switched in the 00s and everything became a lot more homogenous, shops started selling the same thing and everyone started to dress a lot more similar.

People very quickly used to move onto an older style of clothes though. I grew up working class in the 70s and 80s and by the time my Mum was in her late thirties, she wasn't wearing much that was different from my Grandma - sensible mid length skirts, plain blouses and sensible shoes. She never wore trousers. Looking back people looked older, I can't believe some of the photos of relatives who look distinctly middle aged when they were actually still young in today's terms. It's the clothes that make the difference.
There was a huge divide in young fashion and older clothes.
I've asked my Mum about this, and she said you'd very much be judged for trying to be fashionable or appear youthful - "mutton dressed as lamb" etc.

I cannot with the socks, and when I ask the young they just go 'dunno, just socks' so that does not help.

The reason I am sock pondering is because I bought a ballerina shaped poplin skirt which I love and wear with bright trainers, but I can't work out the correct dockage.

The M & S wide cropped frayed jeans are a thing of beauty and are cropped enough in petite to be proper crops on shorties like me.

And I want a broderie (sp?) top.

@HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf - is that the short length rather than extra short length? I’m 5 foot 2 and most cropped trousers look awful!

I also need mine all the time, ( even under the care of moorfields eye at one point so my eyes aren’t standard fare) everything super blurred when I take them off and even need prescription swimming goggles. I do need both reading and distance but I don’t like varifocals so I just swap between my two glasses. But even with varifocals it’s still considerably cheaper at Lensology than your Specsavers, boots, Vision express, etc. I had some glasses I wanted from boots, all in would have cost me over £600 which I was not wanting to part with, so I purchased the frames separately, went to Lensology and I ended up paying £300 all in.

I too am very sensitive to anything being “off” if the tilt of the lens is a smidge off, it will be a nightmare for me, I suppose when I was mentioning Lensology I assume everyone is in or around London ( I know we are all over the world on here but my brain wasn’t engaging at the time of typing this, lol) so I actually go to their showroom to get them fitted but i guess that makes no sense if you don’t live within reasonable distance to their shop 😅

I didn't realise Lenseology has a shop @hoxtonbabe .
Like you, I'm really sensitive to anything being off. I just returned a pair of glasses because even though the prescription was right, something about where the lenses were positioned in the frames meant my vision was off.
I've been put off using Lenseology before because I don't want to buy online without getting pupillary distance measured properly etc. But if they've got a shop, that's a different story...

Lovemycat2023 · 09/06/2024 10:17

My problem is online shopping and algorithms. I just get pushed the same thing all the time. It’s a bit like Tesco.

So really I need to go to actual shops and try on different things, but they are so hot and busy and the changing rooms are awful!

Lovemycat2023 · 09/06/2024 10:20

I’m on holiday in Europe at the moment and a lot of women my age and in their 50s are wearing great shaped trousers. Barrel shaped cropped I think, in linen

Pollipops1 · 09/06/2024 10:23

@MorvernBlack yes people did look older, my granny didn’t wear trousers until her late 80s. My mum has never dressed like my gran though & whilst her and her friends dressed differently to my friends and I they still looked good. My mum and dad have always worn jeans for example and yes things are more sensible but still nice. I “borrowed” my mums zebra Birkenstocks last week and she is going to have to fight me to get them back 😆

TheMoth · 09/06/2024 10:24

I quite often get complimented on my outfits by teens in school. Now, it could be in a patronising way (bless, she's trying at her age), but I can't remember ever liking anyway anyone older wore when I was a teen in the 90s. The whole point was to dress as differently to adults as we could.

My own teen lives in nike pro and crop tops and crocs. Definitely not for me!

henlake7 · 09/06/2024 10:37

I just wish Id had my current mindset when I was younger.
So much stuff I was afraid to wear coz I worried about what people would think of me. Now in my 50s I very much dont give a fuck and its a breath of fresh air to my mental health (and my wardrobe!!).😆

suburburban · 09/06/2024 10:45

RampantIvy · 09/06/2024 09:51

@hoxtonbabe do you wear varifocals? It is the varifocal part that bumps the price up. I also won't buy online because getting the fit right is crucial. I wear my glasses all the time I am awake so while they cost £££ the cost per wear will be pennies.

Nor will I for that reason and I can go into the optician and get my glasses altered at any point

Springwatch123 · 09/06/2024 10:56

@henlake7 i’m more confident in what I wear now also (fat and fifties). Admittedly, a style analysis I had done a few years back got me on track and gave me the confidence to embrace me. I’m not saving the dresses for meals out (or best) any more and wearing clothes that suit me in terms of shape, colour and style.

MermaidEyes · 07/06/2024 14:29

I still love my black skinnies with oversized tee, leather jacket and converse and still gets the thumbs up from the teens. Recently bought some high waisted bootcut jeans, 16 year old dd promptly said my arse looked 'fit' in them and asked where to buy them 😆

So where did you buy them from?? 😂

MermaidEyes · 09/06/2024 11:18

@Donsyb New Look 😉

sunshinechaser · 09/06/2024 11:25

I agree wide leg trousers and jeans are much younger looking than skinnies and straight leg.
Also re glasses-I switched to contacts as I think glasses are quite ageing (sorry don't go crazy with me! Especially when older people get their glasses out to read restaurant menus).

MaryFuckingFerguson · 09/06/2024 11:28

Wide legs are really flattering. I thought I’d hate them after being in a ‘uniform’ of skinnies for years, but I love them. I have to wear them with a something fitted on top though.

YorkNew · 09/06/2024 11:30

I’ve just returned from a very swanky hotel in Switzerland and I’m now back in my skinnies after doing a lot of people watching. There wasn’t a pair of wide leg trousers in sight. People seemed to dress there age in a fantastic way so I’m copying a few of their looks.

BoostBar · 09/06/2024 11:33

I really disagree that wide legged trousers are universally flattering. I don’t mean versus skinny jeans (they never really suited me or many others anyway!). But I see so many women of my age (forties) wearing the uniform of black wide legged trousers and trainers to work now in my commute, and it doesn’t flatter many people.Tailored trousers look so much better on the people I see sticking to them.

Of course, it’s a comfy style and I’m all for women embracing practical dressing. But it really doesn’t look that stylish unless you have a defined waist, and can be extremely unflattering on the arse.

I wear contact lenses, but I can't see close up anymore... so I have cheapy reading glasses for reading menus and cooking instructions!

sunshinechaser · 09/06/2024 11:51

@TheMoth maybe you need a different prescription. I have one contact lense for distance and one for reading and it works really well.

Yes..it’s in Watford.

I dread getting new glasses and I always have to pray nothing needs tweaking as it’s just such a hassle, lol

I tend to buy big frames now so I think that’s helped when I buy my basic cheapo gym glasses ( like £25 for 2 glasses from glasses direct online) there’s more for them/me to play with with the strongest part of lens in the frame but I have a couple of small non gym round ones and those are the ones that need to be fiddled with more to get right, so I’ve given up on smaller frames as I was fed up of going back and forth to the opticians to get it right. But if I buy more expensive frames I will always go in the shop/or reglaze by going in

RampantIvy · 09/06/2024 12:21

@hoxtonbabe I'm nowhere near London. However, we have an absolutely brilliant independent optician in the next village. I was bowled away after having an eye test recently, after having used Boots and Specsavers for years. My glasses didn't cost any more than my old ones from Specsavers either.

I can't wear contact lenses @sunshinechaser. I have very dry eyes and cornea damage.

TheMoth · 09/06/2024 12:23

I need to accept that I am at the varifocal age!

If you don’t want people to go crazy at you, don’t make stupid, ignorant, ageist comments. What do you think “oldies” should do, if they can’t read 8pt pale grey fonts by candlelight? Stay at home so they don’t spoil the youthful aesthetic of the restaurant?

RampantIvy · 09/06/2024 12:33

You can stick your ageist comment where the sun don't shine Hmm
I take my glasses off to read small print as I am short sighted. HTH.

sunshinechaser · 09/06/2024 12:44

😂 I can comment on what I think makes people look old-it's just my opinion. I also think grey hair is really ageing and hate the threads on here when people ask if they should stop dyeing their hair. It's just my opinion 🤷‍♀️

sunshinechaser · 09/06/2024 12:46

@LoobyDoop2 no I don't think oldies should stay at home. I do think reading glasses make people look old though. Just my opinion. I'm old but I still like to look nice.
