I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

The young folk wear white socks that stop at lower calf level, so they go over gym leggings.

And they look like they have no fashion sense at all!

kittykitty · 08/06/2024 22:13

Having had a lot of input from both my 21-year-old daughter (and TikTok) here are the various changes I've made over the past few years.

  • middle parting (from years of having a side)
  • eyeliner only on top lid
  • wider jeans (although I do have skinnies for home use)
  • cooler trainers - vega/Adidas Campus etc
  • sock change (from trainer to ankle)
It's not that I'm chasing after my youth, but in the same way I'm not ready to embrace grey hair just yet, i don't want to look any older or more fogey-ish than I have to.
DancingNotDrowning · 08/06/2024 22:19

I entirely disagree. Teenagers have access to social media and mediocrity at its best at a cheap price. Any fashion ideas they have is some diluted version of an idea of someone much older with an emphasis on quality and structure that has been created for the mass teenage mass market

and I entirely disagree with you 😊

You’re assuming teens (and i was specifically talking about older teens/20-somethings) make fashion decisions based on what is available in the shops for the “mass teenage market” but by the time styles are hitting the high street shops the demographic I’m referencing have been experimenting with the style for a few seasons.

the (pre-alpha meaning) preppy rich American aesthetic didn’t start with mui mui deciding that tennis skirts were cute for last year. It started with 20 year olds discovering Gossip Girl and filling the cool bars with thrifted 00’s sport-chic pleats and plaid. This then feeds “the version of an idea of a much older person” before it’s vomited back into the cheap mass market.

Thoughts on Adidas sambas? With straightish leg jean, turned up?

Pollipops1 · 08/06/2024 22:54

Thoughts on Adidas sambas?

When the prime minster has them the trend is over 😆

Ifyouholdonforonemoreday · 08/06/2024 22:55

@Pollipops1 I know…is it really true though?

Pollipops1 · 08/06/2024 22:58

They are for me, far too ubiquitous now but I don’t want to wear the same trainer that everyone else is wearing.

Pollipops1 · 08/06/2024 23:04

I like the SL72s if you want that 70s feel and I find them more comfy than sambas.

Pollipops1 · 08/06/2024 23:08

I bought a pair of Nike Cortez last month as I loved the colour way & they seem to be having a resurgence.

I think adidas specizals rather than sambas.

CormorantStrikesBack · 08/06/2024 23:10

@Garlicker i completely agree about the shoulder pads prediction. I’ve seen them on a couple of things in the shops already! 🙈😁

Squidlette · 08/06/2024 23:20

Adidas shell toe here. I'm serious about re- living my youth. I was never a gazelle or samba girl. Flirted with converse, but my feet know where they're happy.

I love a turned up skinny Jean and a.dm Chelsea boot best of all though. I'm tall, so it looks boss.

Foxlover46 · 08/06/2024 23:21

We would of took the right Micky out of anyone wearing their socks up that high and absolutely called them Michael Jackson at my school 🙈🤣🤣
I'm approaching 50 never worn wide leg trousers , I work with horses so I'm always in riding leggings / sports leggings so I wear skinny jeans to keep with the theme
Following this thread with great interest in how to get a lot trendier

RampantIvy · 08/06/2024 23:28

These are my Adidas trainers. They would probably be considered deeply unfashionable, but they were the only trainers I tried on, after trying on many many pairs, that didn't hurt my feet.

Mamanyt · 09/06/2024 00:22

LOL, not a thing! I'm 71 years old, and have descended gracefully AND gratefully into "swamp witchery." My hair is long and uncolored, my clothes are what is comfy and what I like. I started wearing bell-bottoms in the 60s, and have gone back to them, making them by hand as I always did. NO makeup, unless I am making a rare visit to somewhere upscale. Fuzzy socks are my friends. IT IS GLORIOUS! And you know what? At my age, NO ONE CARES!

The only thing missing from my life is the ability to move to a little cottage deep in a forest, read my books, grow my own veggies, and take care of the animals who come to my yard...

FindingMeno · 09/06/2024 05:26

Honestly I look at it a different way.
Instead of adopting a trend to stay current I reframe it as looking at current trends and adopting one or two only if they appeal to me and would suit me.
Subtle difference but I prefer to retain my own tried and tested style just with a little nod to new trends.
So, for example, I enjoyed the change when I went to a centre parting, but I totally avoided puffy sleeves. And wearing socks halfway up my calves goes against all my efforts to elongate my legs so I won't do it.

Lifestooshort71 · 09/06/2024 06:26

White socks pulled up have always been hideous and why force yourself to wear wide legged trousers when they’re not flattering? agree with first bit but not the second. Wide-leg trousers (from the knee) balance out a big bottom and also cover comfy/old-fashioned trainers. Personally, I prefer this look to a big bum tightly encased in denim dwindling down to skinny ankles and clumpy shoes.

BitOutOfPractice · 09/06/2024 06:56

Thats exactly what this thread is about @FindingMeno

now you lot have got me looking at new trainers 😬

But "doing you" might be keeping up with trends? What you actually mean is "do me as I don't think you should keep up", which is fine of course but slightly ironic.

My 15 yo dd wore my adidas superstars a couple of weeks ago. She reckons they’re coming back in again. Idk if she’s right or not. I also prefer the spezials to sambas but can’t bring myself to buy suede… but what do I know, I have Reebok freestyle hi for dog walks…

Partridgewell · 09/06/2024 07:24

I absolutely LOVE wide-leg trousers! I am fairly tall -5'8", and around ten stone, and carry all of my weight in my boobs and hips. I also have fairly short legs for my height. Wide legs tend to be high-waisted, so they cover up the shortness of my legs and the size of my bottom, making me look more balanced and emphasising my waist. I guess if you don't have much of a waist, wide legs are not so good.

I am thrilled skinnies are gone - my legs looked like parsnips in them.

The sock thing I will not do - they make my legs look even shorter.

Garlicker · 09/06/2024 07:42

My 'waist' doesn't even qualify for the term. My flappy trousers still look good, though, I'll have ye know!

Hidinginbed · 09/06/2024 08:02

I agree that skinnies can totally ‘parsnip’ legs - unless you have very thin legs they really aren’t flattering, I think we have just got used to the shape but actually they make most people’s legs look dreadful. When they first came out early/mid 00s I was horrified by how bad they made most people look but we just all slowly got used to it.

Jumpers4goalposts · 09/06/2024 08:07

I do wish I’d kept all my clothes from the 90’s.
