I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

I haven't read the whole thread yet but a couple of things I've done :

Lengthened my midi dresses so they are now longer. Such a nicer length.

Shopped on Vinted for a few years now and pretty much only shop there as I can find things I know will fit ( if I'm not sure I will ask for pit to pit measurements and length) and that I know are good quality. I often see things on there that I've wanted in previous seasons but not been able to afford or get.

MyFirstLittlePony · 08/06/2024 12:32

I am 50s and have a weakness for boho style stuff, which is not fashionable I don’t think. Quite floaty unstructured stuff, soft fabrics, and one of the recent trends I have embraced is baggy/wide jeans which I just love to wear

did not like the midi dress trend so have been sitting that one out, but have bought a long length denim skirt with front split and frayed hem

i love a bit of change in fashion and trying new things

socks or side partings I don’t care about 😄

BitOutOfPractice · 08/06/2024 12:41

That’s exactly what this thread is about @housethatbuiltme, tweaking things that you know suit you to give you a more modern twist. The basic shapes that suit me don’t change and I like to think I have my own style. But equally I like to find a few new things /things I’ve not tried for 30 years, to update everything just a fraction. I don’t want to slavishly follow fashion. I also don’t want to look stuck in a time warp so I pick and choise From current looks that I like and that I think will suit me. Does that make more sense?

Pollipops1 · 08/06/2024 12:41

My clothes haven’t changed that much but trainer socks/exposed ankle definitely looks wrong although I don’t like sports socks over leggings. Wearing more bigger bold 80s style earrings/necklaces as that looks more right now.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/06/2024 12:43

I guess the best way to be more environmentally conscious in this way is to hold onto things for donkey’s years till they come back. I have many shoes that fit that bill. And a Few weeks ago I was wearing a blouse that’s older than my 24yo dd1.

henlake7 · 08/06/2024 12:44

I feel like the Fashion Age Police might be coming for me today!
Currently wearing black baseball boots, sports socks, maxi leopard print skirt, fitted black tee, mink coloured cropped oversized shacket, cross body bag......and a claw clip in my bobbed hair!!LOL

Its just alot of current trends are just so comfy to wear!
If platform heels and low rise jeans ever come back in fashion you wont see me for dust!😆

You need a lot of storage space though

I do hold on to clothes longer than I used to do nowadays

This one.

That's nice.

And note the skinny jeans folks 😂 don't believe the tiktok hype (they never went away!).

TheMoth · 08/06/2024 13:08

My style is Katherine Hepburn via marilyn Monroe to work-appropriate version of joey Ramone and a dash of 90s Courtney love on nights out. I keep clothes forever though.

I've worn slip dresses with trainers or combat boots for the past 30 years, so I've gone from scruffy and alternative to mum uniform... all in the same outfit.

@housethatbuiltme i am always quite impressed with people who manage to have their own style, I don’t know that many

what sort of things do you wear? what is your style if you had to describe it? do you do any nods to current fashion at all?

Did a style analysis a few treats ago and part of it was identifying your style personality. Can’t remember them all, but loosely -

classic/tailored/parisian
boho
rock chic
vintage/retro
glamour

i felt I fell in two categories, some days boho , sometimes more classic. It made me realise that there was no point me ever shopping in Mango, Toast, Cos etc, so beloved by Mn, because that didn’t fit my style, whilst Seasalt, fatface etc, so hated by mn were the styles I like.

Isometimeswonder · 08/06/2024 13:26

I wear wide leg trousers cos they suit me. With chunky sandals or trainers
I look RIDICULOUS in skinny jeans (chicken legs) so have never owned a pair.

TammyOne · 08/06/2024 13:34

Miriad · 08/06/2024 07:23

Apparently the French tuck is out and makes you look dated? Chunky shoes are in, as are multiple ear piercings, natural looking hair colour and texture, plain clothing with no logos or twiddly bits, and oversized clothing which is a bit androgynous. I find myself shopping in the men’s section for clothes with an androgynous boxy fit.

Basically it’s what we used to wear in the mid 90s.

Ooh, in the mid 90s I was wearing very low slung cargos and photo printed tops, or pencil skirts and tiny t shirt with trainers. Fake fur jacket and short sticky out hair. I was young though, and a club kid ( happy days!)

Lemonyfuckit · 08/06/2024 13:52

The trousers trailing on the floor makes me laugh as it takes me right back to being at university - in the early noughties. I am short, and trousers were wide legged and/or flared then - as a skint student I rarely went to the expense of getting them properly taken up at a tailors, usually tacked them up myself but they would invariably come unstitched at which point I could no longer be bothered to do it properly and would sellotape or staple them. So hems permanently coming undone and trailing getting damp and mucky. I tend to stick to cropped now to avoid the problem!

Following this thread with interest as I'm early 40s and colleagues increasingly young. Almost all my older colleagues are male, for whom workwear seems to just stay the same regardless of what year it is / how old they are. Different kettle of fish for women.

Phantasmagorically · 07/06/2024 17:10

the fashion mags have all said that the side parting is back. it may not be back with teenagers though.

Al glad we're leaning to back, when a year or so ago it was the thing we're getting slated for as being dated. Centre just doesn't suit me and I have a weird cowlick so it's always been side for me and I think will have to stay that way.

Pollipops1 · 08/06/2024 14:01

They are back anyway as 00s is back, will take a few seasons to filter through to high street though.

At PFW, Miu Miu Just Weighed In On The Skinny Jeans Debate

After years of loose-legged comfort, the skinny jean is wriggling its way back into fashion

I've not thrown out any jeans- skinnies are just stored away for the day come back in fashion.

Getonwitit · 08/06/2024 14:53

I will hold my hands up to starting to veer towards Cruise wear mixed with a little Rita from Corrie but then i am not as young as i used to be. And my skinny white jeans are staying.

Have you noticed double breasted suits for men coming into fashion lately

At least they are not doing 1970s man fashion though

Same.

I have fine hair and a widow's peak. The centre parting always looks off on me.

DerekFaker · 08/06/2024 15:52

Lol I saw several people wearing sports socks and sliders or birkinstock type sandals the other day. Not realising it was 'a look', I just thought "If.you don't want your feet to get wet in this rain, why don't you just wear some proper shoes?".

MaryFuckingFerguson · 08/06/2024 15:57

OneBadKitty · 08/06/2024 14:39

I solved the socks and leggings thing by wearing a boot cut full length sport legging from Sweaty Betty instead of leggings.

In the early 2000s all of my gym bottoms were this style. I loved them. Glad to see they’re back.

I used to wear mine with crop tops - basically a bralet. Won’t be repeating that bit!

@Pollipops1 Skinny jeans never left the high street. Every time I have been jeans shopping there have been more skinny jeans than any other style.

@suburburban the last time I saw a man wearing a suit was at a wedding last year. I just don't see men in suits any more.

suburburban · 08/06/2024 16:12

I was thinking of Joel in Corrie😀

Most men at my workplace still wear slimline jackets if they even wear a suit
