Where to look for a lovely dress and bag for Wimbledon

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 06/06/2024 20:58

I’ve just won center court tickets for Wimbledon along with a couple of nights in a 5 star hotel. Totally out of my comfort zone and need help please. Feeling stupidly stressed about it.

Where to look for a suitable dress and bag for the day? Access to the debenture areas so my Marks midis probably not suitable?
Thank you.

^Do you get commission from Mint Velvet?

Those dresses would do but they're a bit bland

OP- Budget and preferences?

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 07/06/2024 06:20

Oh my lord, I’m even more nervous if that’s the dress code 😳@PragmaticDramatic

Autumn colours suit me, budget can be flexible for the right thing. I like linen and a natural look. I’m thinking a trip to the formerly never knowingly undersold shop would be best for me.

Thank you.

I wouldn’t worry too much. I’ve been to wimbledon several times and the main thing is to be comfortable (especially if it’s hot) and you certainly don’t need a posh bag! A cool linen dress from m&s will be perfect.

Thank you @whirlyhead . Would it be OK for center court and the fancy restaurant areas?
Would a straw, leather trimmed bag be OK ?

It definitely would!

I think your bag is the most important decision
You could be in your seat on centre a long time and the weather can be changeable

I suggest you wear layers ( if you are at the back of centre court it can be cool in the shade, if you are nearer the court you may need to cover to avoid sunburn or rain) .

So make sure your bag is ok for the restaurant , but large enough to have a wrap/cardigan/ bottle of water/ umbrella depending on what the day might bring

Congratulations on your win.. enjoy the day , you'll have a great time

Smart casual, I'd probably wear trousers. Agree with the above poster.

Are you staying at Cannizaro?

DailyEnergyCrisis · 07/06/2024 09:08

Honestly- be cool and comfortable. An M&S midi with a nice bag would be fine. Get a blow dry, tan with gradual tanner throughout the week and do nice makeup, decent sun glasses. Don’t stress and have fun!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 07/06/2024 10:12

@AllumerLeFeu Poetry is exactly my style and colours. Thank you so much.

Sunglasses are on the agenda @DailyEnergyCrisis as I lost my during the week. I’ve got a small face so not the easiest thing to buy but needs must 😎

@RosesAndHellebores no not there. It’s more eye-watering than there in central London, hence my anxiety.

Thanks everyone on here for being so helpful and kind x

I’m very envious!

I dutifully enter every competition The Times mails me - but never win a single thing. Angry

There is no dress code for the debenture area, only the royal box. Look on the Wimbledon website.

We live locally and go every year with friends who have a debenture and there is a range of outfits, although most people look lovely and quite smart. You can wear white jeans and shirt, dress and trainers, or can be even smarter. But actually it’s not at all like Ascot or other events with a smart dress code, and you would probably feel a bit silly dressed in heels and a hat (other than a sun hat).

You do lots of walking, the seats are uncomfortable and it can be rainy. So plan Wimbledon outfit accordingly.

For the smart hotel I may also just go for black & white dresses/culottes/blouses and some nice accessories, but again there will be a range of outfits from business dress to American tourists in casual wear to kids. So be comfortable but smart if you want to.

Jennywren2000 · 07/06/2024 10:19

I would just add, dress so that you feel nice and relaxed rather than to what you think you should be wearing- things are always more enjoyable when you feel like yourself.

Jennywren2000 · 07/06/2024 10:21

And there will be a LOT of straw hats, bags etc. You shouldn’t wear a very wide brimmed hat or you block the view of the person behind you, so boater or panama type hats or caps are best.

ShadesOfPemberley · 07/06/2024 10:25

I’ve been to debenture area several times (how posh am I?!) and have worn M&S midi dresses on at least two occasions!!

i second wearing layers, comfy shoes, practical bag (leather trimmed straw ideal) and hat for the shade rather than a fancy Ascot-type hat.

have a lovely lovely day! It’s fabulous

Pookerrod · 07/06/2024 11:43

It’s not all that fancy, lots of summer dresses but also white jeans etc.
Personally, I would stay away from linen because there is a lot of sitting down and you’ll look terribly creased once you stand up.
It does get extremely hot on a nice day so make sure you wear something cool.

OnehundredStars · 07/06/2024 11:46

Im not remotely stylish so I cannot give advice but wow- what a lovely treat and I hope you have a fantastic time !!!!!

Greatbritish · 07/06/2024 11:55

So jealous!

I had an M+S skirt, Tesco top and ASOS sandals. Debenhams bag. I felt free as a bird in the debenture area.

I've also stayed in two very exclusive hotels in the last year. £850pn.

Whilst both these things are waaaayyyy out of my comfort zone, I've learned that the most important thing you wear on these occasions is confidence. I went to a £50 breakfast after sleeping in the £850 room wearing a pair of own brand trainers, Tesco jeans and a new look t shirt. I pulled it off as I acted like I belonged there. You belong in the debenture area too, whatever you're wearing.

Enjoy!

I’m so pleased that I started this thread as it’s been really helpful, and given me the confidence to get on and enjoy it without too much stress.
I just don’t want to standout as the woman on a freebie!

Thank you all so much.

I went last year with Centre Court tickets. I wore a Nobody’s Child broderie anglaise cotton midi dress that was just perfect, wore it with comfy but smart white trainers and had a smart/practical bag. Play can carry on until 10/11pm because of the roof lights, so make sure you have an extra layer for when it cools down. I hope you have a fabulous time.
