is there ever an appropriate occasion to go out wearing them?

Yes of course, they don't have to be worn under a too tight miniskirt. Pair them with a longer skirt. There was even a thing a few years ago where people were wearing them under ripped jeans .

Thanks, yes maybe an over the knee skirt is the answer

I wear them occasionally with a skirt or dress just below the knee. And l mean “proper” stockings, l’m old school.

In general though, it is appropriate for someone to go for their choice in what they wear. Unless it is likely to cause offence to the majority.

People who wear fishnets often dress a bit alternative or vintage.

Flesh colour fishnets are better at hiding imperfections than sheer tights.

I wear fishnets! I have a few dresses made from band t shirts and they look great with them.
I’ve never done it (because jeans look bad on me) but I think they can also look great under ripped jeans. I also wear them when all my normal tights are in the wash. Until now I’ve never given it a second thought!

If where you're going is appropriate to be bare legged then why wouldn't fishnets be appropriate? I think they're very versatile.
