Hello! I'm in the market for a 100% linen sleeveless boxy shell top but am really struggling to find one, has anyone got any recommendations? Thanks!

I’m going to ask you something mad now but would you consider making one? It sounds like it would be easy enough just two pieces and sew them together.

Arlott · 31/05/2024 07:33

I was going to say make one! Would be easy peasy

i have seen similar in cos, perhaps not linen though

Ooh yes that's such a good point! I do sew so will see if I can find a pattern and some decent fabric! Thanks!

Guthrie and Ghani is a lovely fabric shop and she made a very good video about the different types of linen, I’ll get it for you now.

Can I just ask why you call it a ‘shell top’ I thought ‘shell’ was a reference to the fabric?

Like ‘shell tracksuits’ were those tracksuits in the 80’s.

Someone posted a picture of one from Boden on another thread the other day.

I love the idea of sewing one! Has anyone got any good pattern recommendations?

Have a look at Fabric Store for patterns, they have some free ones...

Next and M&S used to do the simple shell tops , but they are buttoned ones now . Have you tried Ebay or Vinted?

The Colette Sorbetto is a free one...

Also, The Fold Line might have some good recommendations

This is linen mix from M&S and is really nice.

The foldline is a great place for patterns. Be warned though, your day might suddenly disappear if you wander in there.

JustaSmallSlice · 31/05/2024 08:35

New look shell top - not 100% linen, but viscose blends well with linen, so still feels cool but doesn’t crumple too badly.

Peasnbeans · 31/05/2024 08:36

Vinted
Look at Oska

PuppyMonkey · 31/05/2024 08:38

Well, every day’s a school day. Never heard the term ‘shell top’ in my life (although I do seem to own a fair few). Grin

NotMeNoNo · 31/05/2024 08:54

Also look at Itch to Stitch Santorini top (more fitted) and Helen's Closet Ashton top for patterns.

OnTheFerry · 31/05/2024 09:57

Thanks so much everyone - lots to look through. May try and make one, will report back if I do!!

I've made the Style Arc Bonnie top, it's very good. https://www.stylearc.com/shop/sewing-patterns/bonnie-woven-tops/
Also I have a top from Hobbs they still do this year.

That style arc one is perfect! Thank you, will give it a go!

Hobbs used to have lots of this style. Have a look on Vinted - Ive sold some on there in the past.
