Eye make up- am I dated?

SwingingPonytail · 25/05/2024 10:33

I don't 'think' I am but who knows!

I've quite a lot of 'lid' although my brow area is beginning to sag and get some lines.

I've always gone for a smoky look, albeit toned down.
So I tend to use a neutral grey/ beige/light brown on the lid , through the socket and that's it. I've very light skin and green/grey eyes. I look ghastly in pinky shadows and need something on my lids as they are quite pink naturally!

I use some dark brown pencil along my upper lashes and also under my eye (is this dated?) I feel naked without the liner on my lower lashes but I'm sure it's a a bit dated now. (even though Princess Catherine does it!)

I've noticed that many younger women are using a light shadow on the lid (cream/white) and a dark shadow in the crease.
Any ideas?

Some of the make up counters in Boots will do a free consultation and give you ideas about what will suit you.

Following for some inspiration.

I dropped the liner a couple of years ago. Felt naked without it at first but stuck with it and now think it looks better.

I have had this done at Bobbi Brown. I use their products.

I haven't used eye shadow since the 90's! I'm far from a fashion expert and if you think it suits, go for it. I agree with the other poster, get some tips from a make-up counter to see what is the IN thing for your age.

Just tight line under your top eyelash line, and if you do want eyeliner in bottom lash line do a very thin line or eyeshadow carried from darker top eyeshadow colour.

It's hard to know without seeing a picture. There's a lot trending at the moment that leans towards the your skin but better style, very pared back fresh look, which a smokey eye doesn't really fit with.
Means I'm finally on trend with cc cream, cloud paint, light mascara and lip balm, applied in two minutes with finger tips though!
It depends if you care about current fashions, I don't really and have always preferred a less done look, so it's just a happy coincidence that's popular at the moment

SwingingPonytail · 25/05/2024 11:00

The younger assts on counters tend to go for a cream lid- just foundation or a very light base colour- and then the cats eye flicky dark eyeliner. But they are 40 years younger than me.

I think as I'm so pale I suit some colour on the lids otherwise my face has no definition and my eyes are a better feature than my lips.

Ooh I need some eye make up inspiration. It doesn’t look good on me my old look or any of them! My eye skin has changed a bit and also dropping a tiny bit with age (41) so I’ve stopped doing much with my eyes and just going for mascara, lips but miss doing something on the eyes.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 25/05/2024 11:02

Can you post a picture? Unfortunately I do think lower lid liner can be dated and harsh.

buffyslayer · 25/05/2024 11:08

I tend to use eyeshadow instead of liner on my lower lashes and then line my upper waterline

There was a thread about this here a few months ago - I posted on it for inspiration but can’t find it in my threads list.

You could look at Victoria Beckham on IG or Trinny London. They might also be on YouTube, so maybe Google ‘eye makeup tutorial aged 40 plus’ - I only add the age as you don’t want a tutorial for 16 year olds !!!! They both do quick tutorials and you can substitute your own products.

I think with makeup, you need to keep modern - even if you have a signature look, like red lips or smokey eyes, by tweaking it to a more modern version you avoid looking dated. And I know some people decry the ‘dated’ moniker, but if you are posting in style and beauty, you are interested in looking your best, and that means moving your look gently along, while staying true to what you love about your look.

I hope these help - someone will come along with more people to look up soon.

I had a look at Erica Taylor on Instagram

I still do the same thing but try to get eyeshadow going up at sides and in crease and tight line upper lashes but not all the way across

Apparently you are meant to give a new crease to lift eye but....

You have lovely eyes! Can you tell me which shadow you've used on the second pic please?

Agree about looking out for what people who about your age and whose look you like are doing. Mind you, I'm watching Nigella now and shes got eyeshadow and eyeliner on her lower lids.

I couldn't give up eyeshadow, I feel incomplete without it. But what shade I use depends on my mood. I dropped eyeliner on my lower lid during lockdown.

My daughters and I made up each other's faces using our makeup during lockdown. Eye opening how "wrong" we all looked 😄

buffyslayer · 25/05/2024 11:22

@meetmeatsunset I think it was one of the elf palettes, they're 4 eye shadows and about £3 or I use Anastasia Beverly Hills ones a lot
I'm so bad at remembering though as I have about 50 palettes Blush

It was basically a light brown, a darker brown and then a bronze shimmer

meetmeatsunset · 25/05/2024 11:25

I was always a thick black winged liner girl in my 20's. Now I'm approaching 40, I've ditched the black winged liner and use a brown pencil on my upper lid, then sort of smudge it in a bit. I use a light latte colour shadow for my everyday look and then something a bit deeper for evenings, some times a plum or an olive. Nicely shaped and tinted brows make the most difference to my face. And a decent cream cool toned pink blusher. I'm happy with. I think younger women are tending to not use eyeshadow as much everyday but I really like it on me.

Honestly, if you like your make up, and it makes you feel good, it really doesn't matter what the younger women are doing. They also spike their eyebrows up in a weird way so can they really be trusted?

RomanRoysSearchHistory · 25/05/2024 11:31

I'm 46 and have been using light shadow on the lid, darker in the crease since I was 20, as I have hooded eyes.
Apparently this is now (according to social media) a sure-fire indicator that someone is "old" but I don't see it dying out any time soon and I look weird and knackered without the "crease'. Some very good makeup tutorials on YouTube around makeup that ages us.

WandsOut · 25/05/2024 11:39

It's about you and your face and not about fashion, Nigella for example has a certain look and knows what suits her.

What really suits you and feels like you? What feels like too much faff?

NigelHarmansNewWife · 25/05/2024 11:39

I follow Hannah Martin and Andreea Ali on Instagram - lots of ideas there and Andreea has done specific videos on make up for older women which I found useful when I had a make up overhaul a couple of years ago. I'm early 50s.

ManilowBarry · 25/05/2024 11:41

I've found that brown and grey eyeshadow was making my eyes look a big flat as I've got older.

I now use bronze or copper tones and they really open the eye up.

I also switched from black eyeliner to brown.

This palette is lovely

It's hard to tell but when I need a make up refresh I use YouTube or insta for ideas.
Just put your age range in and what look you want and you will get plenty of inspiration with videos on how to do the look.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 25/05/2024 11:44

If that's you in the photos OP you look lovely!

RiderOfTheBlue · 25/05/2024 11:50

And a decent cream cool toned pink blusher

@meetmeatsunset Could you recommend one please?

Pollerono · 25/05/2024 12:23

@buffyslayer Wow, gorgeous!!

Moonshine5 · 25/05/2024 12:26

Use mostly neutrals or a bronzer and a darker shade / contour for effect.
For eyeliner use a brush.
