Eye make up- am I dated?

SwingingPonytail · 25/05/2024 10:33

I don't 'think' I am but who knows!

I've quite a lot of 'lid' although my brow area is beginning to sag and get some lines.

I've always gone for a smoky look, albeit toned down.
So I tend to use a neutral grey/ beige/light brown on the lid , through the socket and that's it. I've very light skin and green/grey eyes. I look ghastly in pinky shadows and need something on my lids as they are quite pink naturally!

I use some dark brown pencil along my upper lashes and also under my eye (is this dated?) I feel naked without the liner on my lower lashes but I'm sure it's a a bit dated now. (even though Princess Catherine does it!)

I've noticed that many younger women are using a light shadow on the lid (cream/white) and a dark shadow in the crease.
Any ideas?

Victoria Beckham is my age and uses plenty of eyeliner and looks fab. I tend to use less on the lower lashes than I used to but I do still use it. I use natural/slightly metallic eye colours for eyeshadow and apply with a fluffy brush so no harsh lines

Outlining your eye always makes it look smaller - it’s what people trying to look slimmer wear dark clothes. Aside from that it is pretty dated now.
Id second the advice about getting a makeover or even a lesson from a brand. Aim for an early weekday morning slot when they’re not very busy.

Only if you fully underline the eye. I always put a little at the corner and a bit in to join the top eyeliner and it opens the eyes up imo.

Kate M isn’t really on trend, tbf. I’d agree with people saying tightline the upper lashes. I find a single pot cream shadow can be really nice, Charlotte Tilbury do some that I use as a grab and go, everyday kind of thing.

Chewbecca · 25/05/2024 21:26

Even Kate M had stopped / eased off the heavy under eye line in her last outings.

I think you have to soften it to avoid looking dated. Smudge away would be a good start!

notacooldad · 25/05/2024 21:53

I really need to learn to tightline - any time I try my eyes start watering and I give up.

Tips would greatly appreciated 😀

My advise would be to have permanent make up. I has eye liner tatoo done last year and I absolutely love it. I wanted it to look slightly thicker on the outer Lash line abd it looks great. I don't have to think about on a daily basis. If I'm going full on with make up I can exaggerate the look. Best thing ever!

Sorry, do you mean any liner at all makes the eye look smaller, or specifically lining the top and bottom? Thank you for the advice!

I had a make-up lesson once that I found very he,Paul. What she said made sense ant that was “Drawing a

continuous line around anything makes it look smaller, which is not what you want for your eyes!”

That said nothing is a rule, so do what pleases you.

Exactly, not all the way round. That’s when it shrinks the eye and can look harsh and dated.

crowgift · 25/05/2024 23:25

I find that liner on the bottom lash just emphasises my dark circles, but as others have said a soft (in my case lightish brown) eyeshadow "line" on the bottom lash is fine

DoingJustFine · 25/05/2024 23:31

I find eyeliner underneath my eyes makes them look smaller. So I use a brown kohl eyeliner along the top lash line, but brown eyeshadow (applied with a small, damp brush) along 3/4 of the bottom lash line.

Getting mascara right fine into the roots if the lashes helps to line them too.

I’ve been rewatching Gossip Girl for the 100000fh time and Blair has a very strong eye make-up game. She’s always wearing some kind of shimmery/smoky eyeshadow and looks 👌🏽

MaryFuckingFerguson · 26/05/2024 01:54

Eyeliner under the eyes is both dated and unflattering. Even Kate stopped doing it - I bet she looks at her wedding makeup and cringes.

As others have said, eyeshadow under the eye is much nicer.

MyOleMan · 26/05/2024 04:29

Your eyes look gorgeous in those pictures op

OldTinHat · 26/05/2024 06:13

I give up with eye make up in the spring and summer due to watery, allergy eyes. Also at the age of a saggy eye!

Instead, I wear red or bright lippy based on the old rule of either tits or legs (not both) and eyes or lips (not both)!

The younger assts on counters tend to go for a cream lid- just foundation or a very light base colour- and then the cats eye flicky dark eyeliner. But they are 40 years younger than me.

I think as I'm so pale I suit some colour on the lids otherwise my face has no definition and my eyes are a better feature than my lips.

Exactly! All this minimal, fresh stuff doesn’t work as you get older as you lose definition. Not only that, our eyes become hooded and more sunken - which is why a dark crease isn’t good and only emphasises that. I use the darker shadow at the outer corner of my eye and a transition shade (or shades) in my crease.

I suggest you watch Angela Bright on YouTube. She does some great eye looks. If you look at her, say, using ABH Soft Glam, you’ll see how she uses transition shades to shape and define the crease without making it look sunken.

Quite apart from the age thing, I think the light lid and dark crease is starting to look dated now. Watch Angela Bright, and also watch a few other eyeshadow people on YouTube where you’ll see different styles of eyeshadow that suit different eye shapes.

IMO, the only thing you’re doing ‘wrong’ is using just one shadow. You’ll be surprised at how much more definition a couple more eyeshadows will give.

For under your eyes, use eyeshadow rather than eyeliner. It’s much less harsh and much more flattering. Dark brown is good and grey can be too, depending on your eye colour. I’ve also used a dark green with a light touch and it looked good.

Smallshaw · 26/05/2024 16:14

Can someone please recommend a great brush for applying shadow to under the eyes (the lower lid).

YorkNew · 26/05/2024 17:07

I’ve ditched the under eyeliner after 40 years of using it and feel I look
a bit fresher. On a night out I wear a tiny bit of the darkest shade of whatever eyeshadow palette I’m using under the outside of my eye.

I use ones like this, usually callled smudger or shader brushes

@buffyslayer , thank you, that looks perfect.

Just an fyi for anyone wanting to know about single eyeshadow. I did wear Stila kitten eyeshadow all over the lid with mascara and eyeliner and it does look good. It brightens the eye basically.

You can just take eyeshadow finely underneath eye and then tidy if needed with your smallest brush. Cotton buds are my go to for tidy ups.

That brush looks good though.

crowgift · 29/05/2024 14:56

oh Stila kitten! That takes me back (wore it for my wedding many moons ago). What a great shadow.

StillSassy · 30/05/2024 10:33

You definitely can still wear eyeliner on the lower lid. Don't be bound by 'rules' - there are no rules. It's all about how you think it looks and how it makes you feel. Go for it!

^^This, wear what make up/clothes you want and YOU feel good good in, every one else can just jog on!!

FFS. The OP was asking what’s dated in makeup terms. She wants to stay current.

Obviously she can wear her makeup however the heck she likes, but she was asking about trends and if lower liner is a dated look. It is.

If she was not interested in trends, she wouldn’t have asked.
