Eye make up- am I dated?

SwingingPonytail · 25/05/2024 10:33

I don't 'think' I am but who knows!

I've quite a lot of 'lid' although my brow area is beginning to sag and get some lines.

I've always gone for a smoky look, albeit toned down.
So I tend to use a neutral grey/ beige/light brown on the lid , through the socket and that's it. I've very light skin and green/grey eyes. I look ghastly in pinky shadows and need something on my lids as they are quite pink naturally!

I use some dark brown pencil along my upper lashes and also under my eye (is this dated?) I feel naked without the liner on my lower lashes but I'm sure it's a a bit dated now. (even though Princess Catherine does it!)

I've noticed that many younger women are using a light shadow on the lid (cream/white) and a dark shadow in the crease.
Any ideas?

I've found that brown and grey eyeshadow was making my eyes look a big flat as I've got older.

I now use bronze or copper tones and they really open the eye up.

I also switched from black eyeliner to brown.

This palette is lovely

You’re correct re bronze and copper.

But I’ve recently tight lined my top lash line with black eyeliner (I do have brown) and it looks good especially with black mascara.

karottybagel · 25/05/2024 12:33

The current look is for pared down eyes. One or two shades. Or the no eyeshadow look

EdgarAllanCrow · 25/05/2024 12:43

It’s hard to give advice without pictures but a smokey eye for every day is wild.

If you feel the colours and liner suit you perhaps just dial them down a notch? Apply the shadow with a really light hand, or go a shade or two lighter. Use a small flat brush to finely apply your liner instead of going straight in with the pencil which can look harsh. Take excess mascara off the wand before applying, etc.

I’d also steer away from anything that’s too matte - cream products look beautiful and fresh especially on more mature skin.

I think if you just softened your makeup overall you wouldn’t need to make any drastic changes.

And a decent cream cool toned pink blusher

@meetmeatsunset Could you recommend one please?

I wear Rose Inc cream blushes mostly, Daylily is my go to. It's a cool toned mauve. Very creamy and buildable. I also like Whisp cloud paint or Claudia Kilsby Penelope pink. They're both liquid blushes but v easy to blend.

JamSandle · 25/05/2024 13:26

I dont follow fashion when it comes to makeup. Of course no harm in refreshing your look. But if you like it stick with it! I think a smokey eye is always in fashion personally.

Back21970 · 25/05/2024 13:51

I really need to learn to tightline - any time I try my eyes start watering and I give up.

Tips would greatly appreciated 😀

I now use shadow under my eye instead of liner as it’s definitely softer but otherwise have roughly used the smokey eye technique since my teens and think it suits most people - I use a lighter touch for a daytime look and ramp it up a bit for going out.

RosyappleA · 25/05/2024 14:30

I am the same as you OP plenty lid space and feel naked without eyeliner. Recently found Eyeliner that is thin and doesn’t need sharpening comes in brown and is perfect to fill in between the lower lashes to not give such a harsh effect and it looks amazing.
On the top I use a taupe kiko pencil and mascara.

I have veiny lids and tend to need something on them like painterly from mac or a peachier concealer.

Outlining your eye always makes it look smaller - it’s what people trying to look slimmer wear dark clothes. Aside from that it is pretty dated now.
Id second the advice about getting a makeover or even a lesson from a brand. Aim for an early weekday morning slot when they’re not very busy.

MissyB1 · 25/05/2024 14:51

I use a shimmery light beige creamy eyeshadow crayon to line my lower lashes, then use the same as an eyesadow on my eyelids. its a number 7 eyeshadow stick, I think it's called shade and define. Its a much more gentle and modern look than an eyeliner. I'm mid 50s and I find less is more at my age!

That's beautiful but I suspect you are 40 years younger than I am. <jealous>

I am on the right lines because I've got a tiny brush which is meant for using with gel eyeliner and I use it for applying a darker eyeshadow to the lower rim. (It's Bobbi Brown Stone, which is maybe discontinued now.) But I also have Blonde and Cement.)

Ironically, I did have a lesson from Bobbi Brown a few years back and asked about using dark pencil liner on the bottom under-eye and they said it looked good.

Go figure!

The eyeliner pencil I use is smudgeable so I do that will will try using even less.

The Charlotte Tilbury pillow talk palette is really good for eyes with a glittery pop option for evening. I use this when I want a more "going out" look.

I mostly just use my cream bronzer for a bit of definition in the socket, a sweep of peach blusher on the edge of the lids, a light gold on the inner bits of the eye and under the eyebrow tail and a black liner inside the top waterline with some mascara.

@SwingingPonytail not quite Grin I'm 41

Auldspinster · 25/05/2024 16:02

I'm 49 next month and no longer do shading in the socket as my upper lid is too saggy. Block neutral colour on the lid, still love my liquid liner but smudge bronze or burgandy underneath as it brings out the green in my Hazel eyes.

Eye make up- am I dated?
ChishiyaBat · 25/05/2024 16:10

I'm 44, I love my eye makeup, always use shadow never liner, always bright colours because I love wearing them. I love purple&green, pink and green, yellow with coral and red like a sunset smokey eye. This month this has been my go to, I know it's not for everyone, but I love it.

Honestly, if you like your make up, and it makes you feel good, it really doesn't matter what the younger women are doing. They also spike their eyebrows up in a weird way so can they really be trusted?

^^this and they wear caterpillars on their eyes!!

I'm 57, My sister (55) was given a eyeliner as a gift, she gave it to me saying "you're the only person I know that wears eye liner" like it was something odd, I accepted it laughing to myself.
I feel naked without a thin line on/beneath my bottom lashes, plus I don't care, I'm happy Grin

It is tricky balancing all the info! There are some good tutorials on YouTube with variations depending on age. There are a couple of Trinny ones where she gets an expert to talk through a full face make up which I found v useful.
Good luck 😊

or blue eyeshadow is apparently on trend this year.

1mabon · 25/05/2024 17:15

Myself, wear just lipstick and mascara, wont leave the house without it. Simply never been bothered. Of course, I use serum and factor 40 moisturiser and factor 50 sunshield.

That looks lovely, could you post a link to what you use and how you do it?

buffyslayer · 25/05/2024 18:56

@LoobyDop I follow Alexandra anele on YouTube who posts some really helpful videos
My basic is a mid tone shade (so for browns a caramel brown) "transition shade" above and into my crease
Then a darker shade (chocolate brown) "crease shade" into my crease and blended just above, and also sometimes the outer corner
Lid usually a shimmer shade so a bronze or gold with browns
Same below the eye working from lightest to darkest (lightest closest to the eye)

Like someone upthread, i haven't used eyeshadow since the late nineties. I do enjoy eyeshadow but I think that I personally look like a drag queen when I have worn it after about age 30! Honestly I think other women look great in it - smoky, mushroomy or even bright, but I do not.

I usually just put my normal cc cream over eyelids and then either just mascara or liquid eyelliner and mascara depending on mood.

Often wear red lippy so definitely not trying to go natural or anything just don't suit eyeshadow any more. I wish I did!

mathanxiety · 25/05/2024 19:40

WandsOut · 25/05/2024 11:39

It's about you and your face and not about fashion, Nigella for example has a certain look and knows what suits her.

What really suits you and feels like you? What feels like too much faff?

Yes to this!

Everyone's eyes are different. Go with what works for you.

Sorry, do you mean any liner at all makes the eye look smaller, or specifically lining the top and bottom? Thank you for the advice!
