Selsun shampoo alternatives?

user1471522343 · 24/05/2024 09:29

Can anyone recommend something.
I happily used Selsun 2.5 (thd bright orange stuff) for years for a mild scalp condition.

It’s been discontinued and my GP has prescribed me with Capasal instead.
It isn’t working and my scalp now has several patches where it’s flaky, raw and itchy.

I’ve tried Tgel and nizoral myself neither or which help.

I thought Selsun was still available in Europe so I’ve checked online this morning and it appears to be discontinued world wide.

I did previously buy ‘Selsun’ (branded differently) from Thailand. It was orange but it was different and not as good as the original and it’s now stupidly expensive to buy online (£25 for a 50 ml bottle).

Has anyone had any luck finding an effective alternative?

I do have a telephone appointment with my GP in a couple of weeks to ask if there is a prescription alternative to the capasal.

thanks

You can buy Selsun from Amazon.

I had dandruff and itchy scalp for 20 years before I did some experimenting and discovered it's actually shampoo which causes it. All those mediated shampoos are so harsh, the active ingredient soothes the symptoms for a few days, but doesn't tackle the underlying irritation.

I switched to cowashing only for awhile then gradually reintroduced an occasional wash with a very gentle, sulphate and paraben free shampoo from a health shop.

The only time I get a bout of dandruff now is after a hairdresser visit.

It looks like you can but when you try and buy them they’re all out of stock. It’s no longer manufactured it seems.

I need it for Seborrheic dermatitis. It’s not a dandruff issue as such. I only wash my hair twice a week but my scalp is a mess right now - raw and itchy.

Have you tried Polytar?

Missingthesea · 25/05/2024 13:46

OP I've recently come across one called Dercos, made by Vichy. You can buy it in Boots. Contains selenium sulphide. I was so pleased to find it!
HTH.

Sending empathy re sebhorroeic dermatitis. I've been putting off getting my hair cut due to it, and currently look as if you could turn me upside down and mop the floor with me 🙄

Friend of mine switched to a bar of dove soap and her seborrhoeic dermatitis has completely cleared up!

CoolShoeshine · 25/05/2024 13:51

These can be purchased from Amazon and contain selenium sulphide- you can only buy small bottles so use sparingly

They work just like Selsun btw and are similarly orange coloured. Takes away the itching which totally drives you mad! Wish they hadn’t officially discontinued such an amazing ingredient.

LoopyGremlin · 25/05/2024 13:54

My dh buys it from Thailand. Sorry you haven't found it to be as good.

Are you outside of mainland UK? I buy the shampoo regularly from Amazon. I just checked and I can even have it delivered tomorrow.

isthismylifenow · 25/05/2024 14:45

It's still available in my country (SA) so I'm not sure about it being discontinued worldwide.

Lots of ideas to try so thanks and will report back for the benefit of fellow sufferers.

That's very good on the left also Nizoral daily .

Hi all.
bought both of CoolShines Selsun style shampoo suggestions.
Used the second suggestion -selenium sulphide Selsun - but for me it wasn’t any improvement on the prescribed Capasal Shampoo from the gp. I’ve since been prescribed Betacap by the gp which is less user friendly than an all-over shampoo as you only apply it direct to areas of outbreak but it definitely appears to be working, so I’m hopeful that using it as and when required in conjunction with the other shampoos will sort this out.
fingers crossed and thanks to all who helped out.

Seem to have missed ‘Dercos’. Will try that too. Thanks

You could checkout Selmax Blue Anti-dandruff Shampoo online or on Amazon. It's 1% Selenium Sulphide Shampoo

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/08/2024 22:36

I've discovered head and shoulders for ITCHY scalp works a treat for me after selenium being the only thing that's ever worked for me, I've never had such a clear scalp after accidently discovering it when staying with a relative and it was in the the bathroom.

I have no idea what my earlier post meant, I promise I wasn't pissed but my phone has a mind of its own 😂
