What do you actually wear over a swimming costume on holiday?

I feel like I never get it right although I couldn’t actually tell you what other people wear. So what type of clothes/ cover ups do you actually wear when you’re going to and from the pool, going for lunch etc.

I have two cover-ups; one is a floaty white linen tunic, the other a black t-shirt dress. Both around knee length. The trick is ease of pull over, and not turning dark or see-through with a wet suit under.

The white linen does need to be treated in the laundry because of sun screen stains though. In hindsight I would get a patterned one.

I just use a sarong. It can be styled in several ways (safety pins required) and works as a lightweight picnic blanket.

I like the idea of a knee length tshirt dress, any suggestions on where to get one? I can’t find any long enough.

I have a sarong, and a striped linen kaftan style dress

I will caveat this by saying I am neither young nor cool and wear what suits me regardless of fashion. I
used to have loads of different types of cover ups but then I tried on one this style of dress. Now can totally understand the reasoning for so many different size women wearing them, they’re super flattering and I love how comfortable they are and how quickly they dry if you give them a rinse through. Am on the lookout for another one to coordinate with my new bikini.

M&S cotton beach shirts, but I cut the arms to a shorter length. I’d put shorts or a dress on to go for lunch though.

I wear a kind of oversized top that's almost knee length (a bit like a shirt dress). You can get them them anywhere. They sell them next to swimming costumes at places like Next, M and S.

Various shops, inc Primark, have 'beach trousers' this year. Lightweight cotton, wide legged. Found mine very useful, and good for a cover up in full sun.

Long floaty maxi dress thing I got from Monsoon years ago. Still going strong.

Yep - umbrella dresses. I have half a dozen, you can also remove costume and redress whilst wearing them😁

I wear different things for going to lunch rather than just walking to the pool.
For just walking to and from the pool I have a very lightweight, loose dress type thing which I bought ages ago to match the swimwear I bought. It pulls over my head, it’s brightly patterned and has short sleeves and is above the knee.
Going for lunch I have 2 sundresses. One is a striped stretchy cotton. Capped sleeves, knee length bright colours. Pulls over the head. The other is blue and white cotton. Zips up. Sleeveless, knee length.

I have one chiffony- kaftan type cover up. Also have some light-weight pull-on palazzo style pants. (To be honest, it's largely my arse and thighs I want to cover up. Top half is in respectable nick Grin)

unsync · 30/09/2024 19:07

Cotton A line dress works well.

LoobyDoop2 · 30/09/2024 19:30

Beach dresses. I’ve been collecting them for years. Criteria are not synthetic (sweaty) and not white (get ruined). If you do this and are reasonably careful with them- hang them up on the umbrella while you’re sunbathing/swimming, and dry off properly before you go for lunch- you can get two days’ wear out of each one. Monsoon/Accessorize and M&S are the best places to get them.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 30/09/2024 21:27

I have a sarong I bought in Ibiza or I just stick on my shorts/skirt and a vest.

But I don't do lazing by the pool much as I get bored easily.

OopsieeDaisy · 30/09/2024 21:45

I have a floaty leopard print play suit with a zip up the back so it’s really quick and easy to get on and off, and an orange patterned beach dress which I haven’t worn yet and in hindsight is quite bold, not sure how comfortable I will feel in that 🤣

BrendaSmall · 30/09/2024 21:47

I just put on a strapless dress or something similar for lunch, or else walking to the beach or pool just wear costume

Rina66 · 01/10/2024 05:47

I like sarongs, strapless playsuits, oversized shirts, pull on magic shorts and dresses. This year I also bought a denim skort from Zara which I wore the most and they looked good with vest tops and linen tops for being out and about.

Rina66 · 01/10/2024 05:58

This years holiday over swimwear hits - Zara skort and Next bandeau playsuit

I wear a block print cotton kimono either a long one as in the pic or a shorter one above the knee

I have two sarongs, an embroidered kaftan-like dress, or just wear shorts and a t-shirt.

It depends if I need to keep the sun off my shoulders & arms or not.
