It’s for a smart (not quite black tie but close) work event. I can’t wear heels and have wide feet and I honestly have NO idea what to wear! I usually wear Docs or trainers, neither of which are going to work with this. I don’t want to spend a fortune as won’t wear them often. PLEASE HELP!

Thanks 💐

Navy trainers with posh laces. Trainers will be fine if all navy and you will be able to wear them again as they will be practical

ashiningbeaconinspace · 03/05/2024 22:34

Pricey but comfortable and sustainable and they come in navy....

Replace the laces with something like this if you feel the need to be more dressy

I wouldn’t be suggesting trainers for a smart event and not with velvet trousers. my thought would be silver heeled sandals but with your requirements- Something flat and plain. If your feet are wide and you can’t wear heels a pair of dark grey or navy pumps. Simply B have some wide fit velvety navy pumps for £12 (Nova). Maybe with dark grey pop socks.

Loafers?

Uncooperativefingers · 03/05/2024 23:19

Absolutely not trainers for "almost black tie". Can you get some pointed ballet flats? The slim point is quite elegant and helps to balance out the trouser volume. Not in black, get navy or a colour that matches your top. If you're in all navy a pop of a bright colour, like pink/orange could look good

Uncooperativefingers · 03/05/2024 23:27

I like these from Next. They have other options in wide fit too if you need that

Please don't wear navy trainers to a smart do and with a velvet suit.

What about some silver brogues?

FirstPastThePostOffice · 04/05/2024 03:18

Oh dear! I was wondering if I could get away with navy trainers as the trousers are pretty much floor length but seems not.
I’m not keen on ballet flats, I need a chunkier shoe to balance out my rather hefty legs. I’ll have a look at loafers, see if anything appeals. Being navy limits things a lot though, should have thought of that before I bought the trousers (and had them adjusted so can’t return them!).

Oh and I wasn’t sure about sandals with velvet - velvet seems quite wintery to me, would it look ok with sandals?

You need a pair of glittery stone trainers!

But you won't see your legs in the wide leg trousers? Imo, unless it's the look you are going for, you need to get careful with shoes that are too clumpy with wide leg trousers. And tbh, I tend to feel that it's a more casual look.

Loafers are a good middle ground though.

Trainers are way to casual for "almost black tie". Black tie is men in dinner jackets and women in cocktail dresses, so a step down from that suggests men will be in lounge suits?

Bobskeleton · 04/05/2024 07:07

If you like Dr Martens why not go for their Adrian Loafer.

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 04/05/2024 07:12

Loafers, ballet flats or a smart lace-up are all fine.

Heels are not necessary and look stupid anyway. I really think heels belong in the dustbin of history.

Velvet wide leg trousers sound a good choice for you for this.

Chilledtorybeats · 04/05/2024 07:15

I know you said no heels but velvet wide leg trousers would look great with a platform metallic sandal. I bought a pair of these shoes with a 3 inch heel recently and they were so comfy I was shocked that I could wear them all day and didn’t think about my feet once. I think Oliver bonas also sell this brand.

Navy patent brogues? Or depending what you are wearing with the trousers patent colour or gold brogues.

Embassy London have these navy and pink ones.

I don’t do heels at all but I could be tempted into some on that website @Chilledtorybeats lovely

'I know you said no heels but what about these heels' is not that helpful!

Merrymerrymerry · 04/05/2024 07:22

What about something like this? DMs but smart? I think black is fine with navy — what are you wearing on your top half?

Although that Esska website has a section of flat with lots of good options that would be perfect with wide trousers.

But stick a platform on the front and you can almost get back to a level surface!

You still have to clump about in those.

I don't think people see how they look when they walk.
