Summer clothes for short 40 something Tom boy

Are we allowed to use the term ‘Tom boy’?

Anyway, I’m early 40’s, 5ft 2 ish, size 12, short hair and I need summer clothes inspiration. I mainly live in dungarees, spend a lot of time outdoors (walking, allotment, occasional cafe with friends etc..). I have just had a hysterectomy and a, just getting used to my new body shape, my tummy is a little bigger than I would like it to be but hoping to work on that now I’m feeling better. Not a huge amount of money so nothing too pricy and happy to buy from vinted. Looking for a couple pairs of shorts (not too short), maybe summer trousers and some summer tops. Nothing flowery or too bright.

If your a similar size and age I would like to know what your wearing/buying for summer, I need inspiration.

No suggestions, though I think we should still use the phrase tomboy. I'm not one.

Im an early 50s tomboy and plan on mostly wearing parachute/harem pants and plain vest tops....probably with trainers!

Not really a fan of gendered adjectives but this is S&B so I’ll save the side eye.

I wear wide-legged cotton trousers, and have bought some combats for the full 1998 vibe, as well as some joggers with cuffed ankles made of some type of synthetic silk material. Also have a couple of pairs of wide-legged tailored trousers from Jigsaw’s sale.

I wear blouses or shirts on top as slouchy trousers + slouchy top can look a bit slobby. If I were slimmer I’d embrace boho camisole tops.

I'm 59 and have always identified as a tomboy!
In the summer I swap jeans for knee length shorts, loose but well cut not baggy T shirts
Simple cut pure cotton/ linen dresses
Footwear choices are limited due to my disability but always trainers( Adidas superstars are perfect for me)
Clarks flat Mary Jane's(misshapen toes)
but I would have fisherman sandals if I could
Stick to your usual style but just less fabric!

Thank you. I prefer to use ‘Tom boy’ rather than the alternatives. I’ve never been very girly but am 100% female.

I think I will look at getting some combat trousers, I do have a pair from M&S that i love as well as their combat shorts but I have had those for a few year and they are a bit worn out. I have worn a few hole in my favourite dungarees from wearing them in the allotment but I might be able to cut the legs off and turn them into shorts. I usually wear denim shorts but last year found them too uncomfortable due to lots of women’s issues, not I have had a hysterectomy I’m hoping eventually I can wear them again. I struggle finding tops to wear with shorts, I used to wear vest tops but my arms are a bit chubby at the moment so would prefer a short sleeve 😬.

EMP do loads of shorts, and many are very unisex or otherwise non-'girly'.

I also like Cider for full-length combats and other trouser styles.

I'm a little bigger than you and also taller, but definitely lean more towards the tom boyish clothes.

My tummy is my problem area too.

I have quit big boobs, so I can't wear anything too boxy on my top half. I tend to wear fitted tshirts and then cotton or linen blend trousers.

Is this for wearing in the UK? Last year I didn't stop wear my jeans all summer 😒 as the weather was so crap. In other years, I've worn denim shorts (I have good legs if I do say so myself) a tank top and a linen shirt over the top. Either birkenstocks or trainers on my hooves

Lovemusic82 · 26/04/2024 17:25

I forgot about EMP, I shall have look and also Cider.

It is for the UK, I don’t think I got to wear shorts much last year but I’m remaining hopeful that we won’t have another wet summer. My legs are my best bit so I do like to get them out in the summer.

It may need to be via Vinted or other pre-owned sites, but

https://www.youmustcreate.com/

would probably be an excellent source for you. Quality is wonderful, the sweatshirts are miraculously well cut in particular.

Lucy and Yak do dungaree shorts that you might like, often available on Vinted too.

I'd look at Finisterre and Rapanui
