What can a mother of the bride wear that isn't boring? I don't want a dress and jacket that I'll never wear again. Don't want a jump suit. I'm a 5ft 3, size 10 redhead with a slightly flabby stomach. Orange and yellow and bronze or gold are my favourite colours. Budget up to £200. Help!

They don't have the Reiss dress in a 10...
So I think I'll go with the bee idea 😅🤣

Actually, @IPartridge , I've just ordered the size 8 and hope it's a bit on the generous side!

Have a look at Wolf& Badger www.wolfandbadger.com/uk/category/women/clothing/dresses/?colour=Gold&colour=Rose+Gold&colour=Yellow+%26+Orange&price_max=250

Or The Outnet is usually good for things that are not standard department store MoB style

W&B have some lovely dresses, but the maxi dresses are really long. A midi on the OP would be like a maxi!

Look at the dresses in Monsoon. I got a gorgeous floor length sparkly dress in dark grey.

I'm a size 10, but my satin would cling to my lumps and bumps...

This? May need taking up.

Will be interested to know how it rates on the boring scale 😁

Snippysocks · 15/05/2024 10:49

@IPartridge The dress was a wonderful (non boring) colour and a beautiful shape I'd have earned it with an artfully draped pashmina....but size 8 was too small 😬

It's very hard to pick out something for you without knowing more about your style: grown-up, floaty and romantic, cute...

But, seeing as you liked the Reiss dress, I'll make a few suggestions based on that but maybe slightly less boring.

It's worth trying some different things just to see.

In my experience women get to a point where they know what works for them and stick to it. Which is fine but fashions do change, so it's worth pinpointing exactly WHY particular things work (cut, colour, fabric drap, length?). Endlessly repeating the same look can leave you looking dated and older than you are.

Yellow Abigail Frill Wrap Dress | WHISTLES | Whistles UK | (sold out in size 10 - but always phoning head office to see if they can find.)

Metallic Maxi Dress | Gold – Jigsaw (jigsaw-online.com) ( definitely not boring but still quite classic as the interest is all in the fabric and the cut. It nips in under bust like the Reiss one.)

Arabelle Linen Dress | Hobbs UK | (Great orangey-red colour. Would be lovely dressed up with gold accessories Little Mistress Gold 2 Part Wedge Heel Sandals | New Look ).

Aspiga Ladies Sustainable Katriona Satin Blue Dress (this type of blue might suit if yellow and orange are good on you. Again it nips in under the bust, but a more flowy feel than the Reiss one. Nude-colour shoes and a blue or green hat (hire it) and it could be a knock out.)

Good luck.

@GamineQueen Thank you so much for taking the time to help me find something! I really appreciate it. I practically live in jeans, so choosing a dress for a wedding was always going to be a challenge. And I'm north of 70 so a one shouldered dress isn't going to be a great look for me. I love the yellow dress but the bits on the shoulders don't fill me with joy. I don't like shirt collar styles - prefer a deep scoop or v neck. I love the metallic material but not the style. The Aspiga dress is beautiful for a holiday but very 'beachy'. Gold sandals? Lovely. Again - thank you!

I think Katriona is the one- elegant, nice length and sleeves, and flattering.

That Reiss dress is just gorgeous OP, I don't think it's boring at all the fabric looks good quality and the structure gives it the formality you need for the occasion but it's also managed to look a bit floaty at the same time! Wearing it as you suggested with gold accessories will be fab. Enjoy the day Flowers

Yes, I don't get that it is boring, it's classy, simple, and can be dressed up with accessories...not boring! Unless your usual style is more like the bumblebee costume (which made me laugh out loud!)
