Are skinnies acceptable?

henlake7 · 22/04/2024 11:29

I know this question comes up alot but Ive been paying attention recently and honestly apart from a couple of women in modest dress/headscarf combos most people were wearing skinnies!

or is it just that we arent thinking of skinnies in the same way....
to me 'skinnies' would include any type of skinny legged trouser, which would of course include leggings!
Surely its one of the most common items most people own!?

No, not acceptable, you dare wear skinnies and we'll release the hounds to hunt you down and bark at you at inconvenient times.

Wear skinnies if you like them.

The only person who can tell you if they're acceptable or not is YOU.
Don't fall for shops trying to sell you latest nonsense, they don't care, they just want your money

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 22/04/2024 11:54

I mean obviously if you want to wear skinnies you should wear the skinnies.

But where are you that everyone is still wearing them? I’m in Glasgow and feel that I rarely see them these days. I definitely don't describe leggings as 'skinnies'. To me skinnies' are skinny jeans,

henlake7 · 22/04/2024 12:26

As I said if you include leggings as skinnies then they are really very common!
Although I have def seen a few pairs of skinny jeans....maybe its where I live (def abit grotty and poorer income).

Also I have lost nearly 7st in weight in the last couple of years so you can bet Im gonna strut my stuff in a pair of skinnies every so often!!LOL😆

Skinnies always just meant skinny jeans to me, I wouldn't put leggings in the same category, they're usually dressed very differently and leisure wear is still pretty popular.

I don't wear my skinny jeans anymore, they feel too dated (though I do have some mom style jeans that are slim and I turn up the bottoms so have a similar affect), I wear leggings for exercising and long haul travel!

But of course, wear what you want!

Eggsontoastisyum · 22/04/2024 12:39

Hi, when you ask are skinnies acceptable, it depends what you mean. If you’re asking if they’re still in fashion, then no they aren’t. They’ve reined supreme for a very long time, but many people have now moved on.

Is it still acceptable to wear them? Of course. Wear whatever you like.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 22/04/2024 12:45

I don't.

Divebar2021 · 22/04/2024 12:48

Crikey surely the last thread on this is still going. I don’t know where you live but in my bit of the south east they do exist but generally on people who are maybe not so concerned about trends and are to my mind not that stylish.

justanotherlaura · 22/04/2024 12:48

I won't stop wearing skinny jeans just because they've fallen out of fashion, I look huge in anything other than skinny jeans, my legs are my thinnest part. As long as the shops are selling them, I'll be wearing them!

InAMillion · 22/04/2024 12:50

Skinnies are fine if you're wearing boots otherwise no not really

But wear what you like

Legoninjago1 · 22/04/2024 12:57

The fact that this keeps coming up time and time again and the overwhelming response is usually anything from 'I love them but they don't suit me' all the way up to 'I live in my skinnies, they'll have to peel them off my cold dead body' suggests that those desperately trying to stop skinnies being popular, (for whatever reason), by trying to force them out of fashion, are failing miserably! Skinnies are great with any footwear as long as they suit you!

Indeed, the fashion industry want you out of them OP but the peasants are revolting!

WhereAreWeNow · 22/04/2024 13:07

I know they're not officially in fashion but when I look around at what girls and women are wearing on the tube in London, it's obvious that they are still really popular.
Personally I've tried to branch out into mom jeans and wide legs but I still keep on coming back to my skinnies.i find them comfortable, easy to style, and flattering.

mitogoshi · 22/04/2024 13:09

Who cares? Wear what suits you. Plenty on display around these parts

TuesdayWhistler · 22/04/2024 13:10

I'm sitting in a cafe looking out the window.

I've noticed a thing..

Women are wearing all kinds of bottoms. I've seen leggings and skinny jeans and wide legs and dungarees and more.

The most.common 'look' has been black leggings, white socks and trainers with a knee length puffer looking coat.

So.. I dunno what that means. 🤪🤣

Legoninjago1 · 22/04/2024 13:14

Haha @EatCrow exactly! I'll put my hand up - I am revolting and proud of it 😄

There’s always two ways to read that! We can be revolting together. 😁

TheOGCCL · 22/04/2024 13:54

Skinnies are a classic and very practical so they aren't going anywhere. But where I am (London) most people are wearing looser shape bottoms, or leggings. Leggings are not the same as skinny jeans as they are more the athleisure trend (I'm just back from the gym/Pilates - maybe).

Skinnies can look a little dated if they are worn with other fitted clothing. But if they flatter your figure, I can see why you wouldn't give them up anytime soon. I think they are generally leg lengthening.

Skinny jeans are often not as comfortable as other shapes so that's driven things too, in the pandemic pursuit of comfort.

The falsehood is that skinny jeans flatter a lot of people. It's very easy to look very top heavy and therefore out of balance. And currently it shows a lack of interest in fashion - but that is absolutely fine!

henlake7 · 22/04/2024 14:55

Maybe I just find it curious how leggings get a free pass when it comes to the potential fashion faux pas of skinny bottoms!

But then Im old enough to remember the birth of leggings when we all thought they were hysterical and made women look like Max Wall!😆

jobsjkfo · 22/04/2024 15:00

Leggings are a different style of trouser though, made from different material with a different purpose? Not really comparable in the way you're saying. As someone else said they're part of the athleisure trend and why they're still fashionable, wearing them with a dress is what would be the fashion no now.

AllTheMiniEggs · 22/04/2024 15:02

I don't really understand these threads.

Acceptable to whom? Who actually cares what you wear?

Read any interior design magazine and it will tell you the grey is now out of fashion but try telling B&Q that!!!

If skinny jeans/grey paint is still be sold, people are still buying them!!

Wear what you like Smile

Floisme · 22/04/2024 15:04

This is turning into a rerun of all those threads about leggings and tunics.
