I'm in the market for some really comfortable spring/summer shoes.

Fitflops and Fly London boots (wedges) in the winter
Birkenstock sandals in the summer
I also have secondhand Vivobarefoots for walking/running

Orophile · 15/04/2024 17:05

I always buy a pair of supportive insoles to go in all my shoes and boots (apart from evening party shoes).

The insoles often cost more than the shoes!

Live and die in my saltwaters when the weather is nicer, they are so comfortable and if they start to feel a bit 'off' just get them wet and they remould to your feet again. I opted for the rose gold style and they are so versatile - you can wear with casual clothes or a pretty dress in the evenings. I do think the metallic colours lend themselves best to the dress up/dress down look though

@Realdeal1

I've found ecco a good brand. I spend long hours on my feet on a regular basis. Around the house I wear slipper boots with a really thick sole to cushion my foot

Skechers were comfy for a bit when the plantar fasciitis (pf) was really bad, but the shoes wear out really quickly (and aren't fashionable at all). But desperate times called for desperate measures! There is also some debate around whether memory foam could actually worsen some foot issues like pf

Generally shoes that are lace- ups with good sole cushioning are recommended as it keeps your foot more secure in the shoe and absorbs some impact when you walk. The theory is that anything with open backs/toe poles etc will encourage require your foot to tense the plantar muscle to grip your sole of the foot to shoe, putting more strain on it. I have found this to be true and avoid flip flops like the plague. There are some useful pf threads on mumsnet. Some people find different forms of relief, so it may be a case of trying something for several days to see what works for you.

@Pixiesgirl I have had really comfortable shoes from Clarks, Dune (though they seem better for boots rather than summer shoes) Rocket dog and Blowfish.

Have tried birkies but found the soles too hard and uncomfortable.

Portakalkedi · 15/04/2024 19:12

For me it would be the terribly named Reebok Work n Cushion trainers, currently on my 4th pair. Had Birkenstocks once and found them the most uncomfortable shoes ever, with the very unforgiving and hard cork insole. Also have had some very comfy sandals from Clarks.

SwordToFlamethrower · 15/04/2024 19:45

Primark crocs

LadeOde · 15/04/2024 20:16

@Pixiesgirl Love those sandals! Birkenstocks, which are very much loved on MN are the most hideously frumpy shoes ever.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/04/2024 17:29

I wouldn't wear them whatever age I was.

Nor me! Lol! just showed these to my 32 year old DIL and 23 year old DD. They wouldn’t wear them either.

Each to their own I suppose 🤷‍♀️

goingdownfighting · 15/04/2024 20:28

Birkenstock Mayaris. Prettier, and more supportive.

I’ve got some Think! shoes and they are the softest leather with the most comfortable insoles and the bendiest, grippiest soles. I’ve done long walks in them and found them to be more comfortable and supportive than my hiking boots.
They are expensive though. I got mine second-hand, but new they are not cheap.

I have several pairs of Think! shoes. Expensive yes, but well worth it. I know that I can take them out of the box, put them on and wear them all day without socks: never a blister, they never rub and they come in very quirky colours, the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn.

EmilyTjP · 16/04/2024 09:52

I don’t find Birkenstocks comfortable at all!

Lovemusic82 · 16/04/2024 10:55

I have a pair of Art sandals, they are very old and very comfy. I bought DM’s last year and they cut my feet up 😬. Birkenstocks are ugly mum sandals or as my dd calls them (middle aged lesbian sandals), I find them really uncomfortable too. I do own crocs but can’t walk far in them, Teva are pretty comfy.

I don’t find Birkenstocks comfortable at all!

They would get soggy in the rain.

HaveringGold · 15/04/2024 07:04

Birkenstocks
Adidas
Air and Grace
Bared Footwear

I did try Vivaia the other day looked great, ripped my heels to shreds

I was thinking of getting some vivaias. Is the material too stiff or were they a bad fit?

HaveringGold · 16/04/2024 11:13

@alwaysonadiet1 I definitely recommend sizing up and in fairness the material sticks to the feet well for ballet flats, so the sizing up isn't a problem.

I bought two pairs I found the pointed toe one much more comfortable. So the Aria, the Margot was hellish.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 16/04/2024 11:27

I find Vivaia shoes comfortable - they do half sizes ! That's half the battle for comfort for me. If I sized up they'd fall off! I can't wear Birkenstocks or anything like that as they seem to just fall off my feet.

I also find Gabor, Rieker and Caprice comfortable. If it's sandals that I'm wearing barefoot, the leather has to be incredibly soft otherwise I get blisters.

alwaysonadiet1 · 16/04/2024 12:26

I'll give them a go. I wear sketchers a lot because I walk everywhere but would like something a bit smarter to walk in.

alpinia · 16/04/2024 12:42

I'll add to the Allbirds. More of a casual trainer though. Only thing is, they don't last too long. I think I'm on my 4th or 5th pair in 2 years.
