What would you wear age 43, size 22, for a night out dancing?

As the title says really! I prefer dresses, knee length, short sleeves, budget ideally under £100 but would go over for the right dress. Any colour but prefer black/blue/green/patterned, not keen on white/cream/yellow/orange. I've been looking on Next, M&S, John Lewis, Yours & Simply Be but nothing's quite right. It's a fun night out so I don't want a wedding outfit look, but need something that flattering on me (not too tight, short etc). Any suggestions?

Try www.vivienofholloway.com

Every time I wear one of her dresses, I get compliments. But check sizing carefully, you will need to measure yourself.

Yellowpingu · 15/04/2024 10:08

I’m the same size and a bit older than you. I get my dresses from Boden or from Sainsbury’s (Tu)

The Scarlet & Jo dress just arrived and I LOVE it. I'll definitely keep it whether I wear it for my night out or choose one of the other dresses I've ordered. In fact if I had more occasions coming up I'd buy it in a few more colours as well!

I last went out dancing about 3 weeks ago. I wore a black bardot top, high waisted loose ripped jeans and some leopard print Nikes.

I'm 41 though.

treacledan71 · 15/04/2024 14:19

Bonprix have some nice stuff.

namechange0998776554799000 · 15/04/2024 15:48

Probably what I SHOULD wear is jeans and trainers, but what I WANT to wear is sequins and high heels. I'll probably end up in the scarlet & Jo dress, which is neither but will be comfy and will be all swishy when I dance!

Here is the 4th dress. They look better in person than in my terrible photos!

i like the leopard(?) print one.

namechange0998776554799000 · 17/04/2024 13:41

Yes I think the leopard one is my favourite.

Thank you all for all the suggestions, I think I had a much more successful shopping spree because of them!

1 or 4 :) love the sparkles!

The green one is a gorgeous colour which really doesn't show up in the photo, much more like this

I don’t agree with those who say Scarlett and Jo are frumpy. They are flattering if you’re plus size, and the colours and patterns are lovely. I would say they are timeless and classic, especially for wedding guests

Peppermintpatty56 · 14/04/2024 17:37

I’m a similar age and size- I don’t like Scarlett and Jo- they’re clothes are “flattering” but to me they’re “typical” clothes that seemed to be offered to plus size women as what we should wear. It’s a real pet peeve of mine!
Anyway, to answer you Op- I would go jumpsuit too, they can be really lovely on, you just have to find the right cut. I also think they can look more current than some dresses.

I always go more simple with clothes but add personality with accessories. I’ve I were going on your night out id wear barrel/wide leg trousers with a tee or cami and a blazer with a chunky sandal or a pointed sling black or flat and a really beautiful bag and chunky gold jewellery.

https://www.simplybe.co.uk/shop/p/wg433 again could be dressed up or down- denim is everywhere at the moment and this is a lovely shape

Speaking as one who is plus size, I don’t think the gingham one is kind to plus size arms!

Lj8893 · 17/04/2024 16:08

What a refreshing read! Most posts have suggested nice, age and occasion dependant dresses! Unlike several other posts I have seen 🙈

I love the leopard print on you OP, and the dress sequins 👌

namechange0998776554799000 · 17/04/2024 16:38

It's ironic that my favourite is the leopard print one, which cost a princely sum of £30. The black sequin one was £59, green sequins £83 and scarlet & Jo was £90. I'd say the quality is exactly in line with the prices, so in the long term I probably will get more wear out of the more expensive ones.

Glad you found some dresses you like.

Just wanted to add something - on the off chance you are wearing tights and can't find the right ones.

It occurred to me as you said you liked one website that had realistic models. Have you tried Snags?

I mention this as I stopped wearing dresses/skirts etc as I hate hate hate tights. Because they never fit, the crotch slides half way to my knees and I'm constantly tugging at them. We were just away and I knew I was going to need to wear dresses a couple of times and someone had recommended Snags so I thought I'd give them a go.

OMG!! (& I hate that phrase as much as tights!) Their tights are great! No tugging at all - good fit (& I'm a size 24) and a fantastic variety of colours and thickness. I got the 80 and 120 denier tights as well as a wool pair (as we were way north and I needed a warm layer under my jeans).

50 denier tights are for you if you like to show a bit of leg through your tights. They are naturally breathable and moisture-wicking. In sizes 4-36.

PurpleWhirple · 17/04/2024 18:29

Late to this thread but I am the same size and age so I'm going to go over the recommendations with interest as it's so bloody hard to find nice plus size clobber.

I also like the leopard print best OP

Wanted to mention that I'm also not a jumpsuit person but got a fab one from John Lewis recently. Wide legged, black and sparkly. The material was lovely and heavy and it hangs so much nicer than so many others. It's literally the only one I've ever liked on me and it's perfect for a night out dancing. I'll try to find a link now, I think it might have been phase 8

Yesss to this!
I wouldn’t buy tights from anywhere else.

MissBedelia · 17/04/2024 18:32

Leopard!

PurpleWhirple · 17/04/2024 18:32

It's gone from the website now but it was phase 8. Would definitely recommend you take a look
