When to change my Tragus piercing?

Hi all piercing people!

Can you give me your advice when go change a Tragus piercing from the original?

It’s been 6 months next week. I’ve had on and off little flares.

It still gets a bit crusty, sometimes it is OK. Definitely no longer red or itchy.

Do I wait until it’s completely fine or can I change it after next week?

I don’t want to mess it up.

Also, something I didn’t think of (went for a helix but my riding hat is in the way when I tried it on for the piercer to check so randomly had the Tragus as it didn’t interfere) was ear plugs.

Husband snores and currently I can’t attempt to put foam ear plugs in which means I’m not sleeping properly. The Tragus makes me happy so I’ll put up with it but can you now wear ear plugs and how long did it take?

Thank you for your advice.

Did you have a check for downsizing ?
DD and I had our tragus piercings done a couple of months ago and we need to go to get them checked (I've arranged to go in a couple of weeks ) I'd not had this with any other piercings

I didn't know this about tragus , I have a daith and a forward helix and not changed them at all.

DD had a tragus a few years ago but changed it too quickly got problems and had to let it heal ( this is the one she had re-pierced )

I don't wear ear phones or the like so no help there .

I've had one flare up with the tragus , but it settled with salted water .

No check for downsizing. I didn’t know it was a thing. I didn’t listen when she was talking to me afterwards properly I was thinking too much about it stinging. That’s interesting.

Thank you for your reply. I definitely don’t want it to heal up. It’s a lot of effort to lose it.

I wonder what they do at a downsizing appointment?

I'm hoping my check up is a Yes that looks fine as if not I have to buy a new piece of jewellery .

When they pierce they need to allow room for swelling but if there's too much space you can get "drift" especially if it gets knocked .
Mine is on the same side as my forward helix so I don't sleep on it anyway .

I got my tragus pierced two months ago, am I supposed to get it checked now? I keep accidentally sleeping on it and it’s going through a sore stage. I’d quite like it downsized.

Not sure what you do about ear plugs. I can’t wear my ear buds.

Had my tragus done years ago and I could/can wear earphones! Earplugs should be fine depending on the jewellery. What is it currently peirced wirh? I find hoops much less irritating.

I had my daith done last year and had to downsize after 3-4 months. If it is irritating you but not red/sore etc id probably downsize your tragus.

I bought some J Lab ear buds. They are the skin tone coloured ones and marketed as being smaller than standard ones. I have tiny ears anyway but can wear these with my piercing and they don't fall out.

I’ve had both mine done for over 20 years

i found that the bar with the flat disk on the back that they were pierced with was really uncomfortable and didn’t work well for lying on them or fitting earplugs etc but once I changed to the ball closure rings I don’t notice them at all now.

i think 6 months should be fine. Although I’m not a piercing expert.
it might be that if you have the bar in that’s it’s a bit too long to allow for swelling and lying on it is what’s possibly irritating it.

if you’re not sure then pop in to the piercing shop where you had it done and get them to have a look, they would be happy to change it for you.

Thank you everyone. You’ve all given me some top tips. I’ll leave it a few more weeks as I’m busy at the weekends with weddings then I’ll pop into the piercing shop and get them to take a look.

I don’t sleep on it as I’m a left side sleeper, but I do knock it myself in the most ridiculous ways. I don’t even put my smartphone to my ear. I listen on loudspeaker. Luckily I work from home. I’m sure nobody wants to listen to my mum telling me the latest debacle on whether her bin was emptied!
