Highlights or Balayage

What's the difference? I colour my own hair, otherwise I'd be grey all over. I've just gone from long hair to short. Now thinking of getting highlights/lowlights/balayage. But really don't know what the difference is.

Highlights the colour is applied from the root and makes your hair blonder.

Lowlights the colour is applied from the root but it makes your hair darker or deeper in tone.

Balayage is typically painted on freestyle and is not applied from the root for a more natural regrowth and finished look.

Thanks for taking the time to explain.

Balayage can go very wrong and it's very expensive compared to highlights

I think I works well if you're trying to grow out highlights because that is essentially what it looks like pretty much

Rather than worry about technique, I'd got on Pinterest and find a colour you love and think would suit you.

Then show it to a hairdresser and let them use whatever technique they need to , to create it.
