Help!

now approaching mid 40’s, have been a parent for 14yrs and for most of that have avoided buying clothes as I have been going to lose weight 🙈
Now I have a wardrobe full of clothes that not only still do not fit, but are mostly way out of fashion. Really don’t know where to begin to sort it out. I’m going out tomorrow night for a friends birthday - dinner and possibly dancing, and I honestly have no idea what to wear. I could possibly do a rush trip into town to get something new but I’m so devoid of any fashion knowledge at this point I don’t even know where to go and what to look for. Summer I’m ok with as can happily do floaty dress and pumps/sandals, and possibly Christmas as I have a sequin top but what on earth does one wear to this type of occasion at this time of year?

Oh same OP, just turned 40 and suddenly hate everything in my wardrobe and have no idea about what looks good, what's fashionable or where to shop.

Do you prefer dresses or trousers for a night out? Heels or flats? Which celebrities style do you like?

Honestly I don’t know! I rarely go out out, we are talking maybe once or twice a year to a bar/club, the rest of the time much more low key restaurants, friends houses etc. I love the black skinny jeans/nice top and heels look but struggle with tops as everywhere I look they are so short and I don’t want to show off my mum tum! Jackets are a problem too, I’ve got relatively broad shoulders so I have never really felt comfortable in a tailored jacket/blazer, but I fear wearing a cardi these days as it makes me look like a grannie 🙈
I don’t really know any celebs tbh, maybe I should spend more time observing but tend to have the attitude that I won’t pull off similar outfits as they are skinny and I’m not! I’m currently (just about) fitting a 14, sometimes a 16 on the bottom, but in my head I identify as a 12 which I always used to be.

If you have a style conscious son or daughter they might help you go through your wardrobe …
