“Ceremony Harness”-WTAF?

I am 50, thought I was vaguely aware of fashion but was totally thrown by this harness being advertised to me on Facebook. I initially thought it was some S&M thing and clicked for a laugh, only to find that the retailer is closer to M&S than S&M, and they recommend that this be worn over a beige blazer…!

What have I missed? Are harnesses as office wear a thing now?! Do I need one? I mean, when I was first at work in the 90s, knee-high boots were a bit racy.

Also, any idea what the “ceremony” bit refers to?

The girl looks like she is wearing a parachute!

Harnesses have been a thing for years now.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 10/04/2024 13:59

New to me. What's the point? Doesn't look great over that blazer because it's rucked it up. Seems a bit S&M crossed over into the mainstream.

Does that mean me wearing a rucksack with a waist strap, and especially, presumably, chest and waist straps, has always been fashion forward?

Who knew?

Mochudubh · 10/04/2024 14:03

Has it got reins on the back?

Totally passed me by. And I live in London! But don’t get out much…Tell me more about how to work this trend…

I think it's awful

I've seen one person wearing it in really life

LadyHester · 10/04/2024 14:18

Is that Carol Vorderman wearing it?

There was a woman all over my TikTok last year who wore them. She was quite edgy and very glam and it very much went with her look. It sort of toughened up otherwise girly looks. I would have been all OVER them when I was a goth!

I live in a deeply uncool town though and have never seen one in real life.

Overtheatlantic · 10/04/2024 14:24

Is that like what the Bavarians wear at October fest?

Lederhosen, traditionally worn by men.

Versions now sold for women, colloquially known as 'ladyhosen".

I actually like it! I guess it's sort of like a waist belt, but, with added structure. I don't like it over a blazer though!

Chersfrozenface · 10/04/2024 14:51

I've seen goths wear them, with the whole goth outfit.

But with ordinary street clothes they look like toddler reins, as a PP suggested, or dog harnesses, or blanket / picnic roll straps.

ADoggyDogWorld · 10/04/2024 14:52

Does the ceremony bit come from standard bearers' harnesses? I know the old British Legion chaps wear harnesses to carry the standards in our village.

ADoggyDogWorld · 10/04/2024 14:54

obvs non functioning as no receptacle/cup* for the standard ferrule to rest in.
*no idea what this part of the equipment is actually called.

Pink wore something related on the Graham Norton programme in February last year.

Same shop same manufacturer- there is definitely a sex element even if the models are wearing clothes 😂 https://www.wolfandbadger.com/uk/rhoia-leather-body-harness/

See, I don't get a sex vibe, it's more an urge to grab the straps and fling them into the luggage van.

I may have spent too much time around heritage railways.

It's like she's wearing braces but forgot to attach them to her trousers.

StarlightLady · 11/04/2024 07:38

That will keep you warm on a chilly night. 😀

Or maybe you could wear it to travel to the Roman bathhouse.
