Hat you can tuck your hair in at the back

Ooer - never posted on Style & Beauty before!

I am old and go to a weekly meeting with many similarly old people - women mostly - so this is unlikely to be fashionable in any way. One of the women has a really nice knitted/crochet type hat, rather like a longish beret which she tucks the back of her hair in, just showing her fringe. I have often admired it and thought - how useful for one of my many bad hair days. Anyway, today I finally remembered to ask her about it and she said she'd had it years and had been looking for another one herself but couldn't find one. I don't even know what to call it. I suppose it's like the idea of a hair net, but definitely a hat. Hers is black and has sparkles! I want to say snood but not sure if that's right either.

My god what a ramble - anybody got any ideas please?

Try searching for a slouchy beanie

Darklane · 09/04/2024 14:58

It’s a beanie, slouchy. Loads of free patterns on Ravelry if you can knit. Like this one.

From your description, I imagined it more like this sort of thing ?
This was on E - Bay .

This is the nearest, but it isn't as see-through - a more closely knit/crocheted one that you would wear in cold weather. The one in the photo looks more like one you would wear as evening wear. I wish I could think of the right name for it.

I like this - but it isn't quite the same. These beanies come down lower on your forehead and the hair goes more on top of your head rather than in the nape of your neck.

It’s a tam o shanter style.

Or a big, loose beret.

Slouchy beanie is your friend

Cheeesus · 09/04/2024 15:45

Something a bit like this? Basically a knitted or crochet beret.

Edited

Mostly they seem to be referred to as snoods - the open knit enabling them to stretch to enclose longer hair .
Have you tried an online search for 1940s style hair snood knitting/crochet patterns ?

Cheeesus · 09/04/2024 16:51

Are you sure it isn’t a knitted beret?

I don't know what it is - but I thought berets were roundish and I think of them as on top of your head, so I didn't think so, but maybe a form of beret.

Thank you everyone - am now searching for slouchy berets, snoods and tam o shanters to see if I can find something. PP is right - there is a 1940s look about it. She looks lovely in it, but I bet if I ever find one it won't look the same on me! 😄

If you have any knitting or even better crochet skills, they really are dead simple to make and you get the style you want as well as colour ways

fridgegrazer · 09/04/2024 19:07

Alas I have never been able to crochet, and I haven't knitted anything for decades. Judging by my previous attempts, if I did attempt a beret, you could probably use it for trawling in the North Sea. 😅

That’s why I specified a knitted one. Like this

Thanks @Cheeesus I like that one.
