Brushing my curls

DustyLee123 · 06/04/2024 08:09

My hair seems to be getting curlier as I age, and so I use products to enhance them now. But my hair is too knotty, i can’t get an Afro comb through it, I’m using the two prongs at the end of a comb. If I were to put a brush through it would frizz my curls.
What should I be using?

You can't really brush curls when they're dry.
I brush before I shower. Then use a wide tooth comb afterwards and pop it into bunches (wavy/curly caucasian hair).

What do you do on the days you’re not washing it?

If it's too knotty then it hasn't got enough conditioner.

It needs more conditioner than you think is sane.

jollyhollyday · 06/04/2024 08:21

Non wash days I wet it using a spray bottle, add product and scrunch
I don't brush when dry as it makes my hair frizz

Illpickthatup · 06/04/2024 08:22

Look up the curly girl method. It totally transformed my hair. It's all about getting moisture into the hair and will make it less knotted.

On the days I'm not washing it I use a refresh spray and dampen it with some water.

I use my fingers to ease out the worst of any knots from underneath my hair and gently over the crown to get rid of bed head matting. After that if it looks ok I leave it, if not I wet my hands and run them through and maybe apply a tiny bit more gel but not too much or I end up with too much build-up.

This, never ever brush your hair when it’s dry!

CheckeredAliceBand · 06/04/2024 08:48

I brush my hair in the shower, that's it. I never brush it dry. On non wash days I sometimes spray it with cantu refresh spray (can't remember the name), sometimes I don't. I tend to shake my head upside down and then ruffle it with my hands, if I'm wearing it down, or I shove it up in a pony tail. I have very curly and frizzy Caucasian hair and I use curly girl method. It's changed my life hair wise. My hair rarely gets very tangly now. I used to cry brushing it in the shower because it hurt so much as was so tangly, now it's super easy and doesn't hurt at all.

This. The joy of having curly hair is that you don't have to beat it into submission in the morning. I get up, scrunch and go.

Oh, I also sleep in a silk cap and only use silk covered hair elastics to tie it up. Makes a massive difference.

DustyLee123 · 06/04/2024 09:15

I look live got a birds nest on my head if I don’t do something. Already have a silk pillowcase. Too short to tie up.

Yes, it is tricker when it's shorter. Longer hair has weight to tame it. I'd recommend spraying and scrunching then as pp have said. I still wouldn't comb it at all personally and didn't when my hair was that short.

Elebag · 06/04/2024 10:43

dusty I shower every evening so it's always given a gentle wash.

umberelladay · 06/04/2024 10:46

There's a lady on YouTube, who is a chemist and gives excellent advice on curly hair (all four types) Curly history is her YouTube name.

She explains all about protein needs and moisture needs. She transformed my hair. I oil mine weekly and it really helps.

umberelladay · 06/04/2024 10:48

Curly chemistry - auto correct 🙄

Spray a bit of water and use your fingers

It curls into itself to cause the knots. It’s worse when I’m hot and sweaty, It gets knotty at the nape of my neck. It’s not dry hair, it shines.

But it doesn't really matter if it's knotty between washes, does it? You're not reshaping it into a style like with straight hair. I just de-knot when I wash it.

Cookerhood · 06/04/2024 20:02

I just sort of prod mine with my fingers to juzh (sp??) it up a bit. I brush it when it's got conditioner in it.

Yes, because when I run my fingers through my hair they get stuck

What is your curly hair routine currently? What products are you using? And do you know your curl type?

Even curly hair shouldn't be getting that tangled up if treated right.

Pigeonqueen · 06/04/2024 21:29

I have curly menopausal hair and I have to keep my hair fairly short and wash it every day as I can’t stand not being able to brush it. It’s got curlier as I’ve got older and I was always used to being able to brush it through the day but now I can’t do that as I just look like a brillo pad. So I just wash it and then brush it when it’s wet and then leave it to air dry with some curl cream. Job done. (It’s just above shoulder).

CheckeredAliceBand · 06/04/2024 22:29

Running fingers through curly hair isnt the best idea.

WaitingForMojo · 06/04/2024 22:40

I never brush my curly hair. I sometimes run a wide tooth comb through in the shower. Others are right, you need insane amounts of conditioner. I also use a leave in. Your hair should feel like slippery seaweed when wet. Try not to run your fingers through it!!
