Modern sizing

I recently got an 80's Windsmoor skirt and jacket set from a second hand shop, it's really lovely in a deep green colour.

I am a size 10 to 12 and I saw it was a 14 but thought the jacket would be ok even if the skirt was too big.
The skirt was so tight I couldn't even zip it up, it was a size 8 if I compare it to my other clothes.

It looks like I might be a size 16 if it was the 80's.
Not 10 - 12

What is happening with modern sizing. Have they just moved the goalposts?

I find shoe sizing really annoying because I am a true British size 6, which has often been totally incorrectly translated as 39, when in fact it's actually equivalent to 39 1/2 (M&S gets this right, bless them). So in shops using European sizing I'm faced with 39 which is a touch too small and 40 which swamps my feet. I usually end up buying 40 but they're honestly too big ☹️

They try and say 39 is a 6, but it isn't, nor is 6 as big as a 40.

I think its 3 things TBH.

1- yes, its vanity sizing so we all feel better about being chubbier!

2- but also we have just gotten bigger over the years. Bigger frames mean you can be the same general size as someone much shorter.

3- the fashion for oversize at the moment plays a part too.
Depending on the shop or item Im anything from a M (14) down to an XS (8), it just depends on the fit!
It can be hard to judge with the oversized stuff as well....getting it so its not too baggy but the proportions still look decent.

I have my measurements from the mid 80s (mid teens) when I was size 10 - somewhere between a 00 and 4 today according to that chart! And I was very tall but considered slim, not ridiculously skinny.

Now I feel even more shit about being a 16 these days...

True! I stressed about my blossoming hour glass figure back then.

I love how these days the ... how do we say ... 'generous bum' is so in fashion 😃

I guess nowadays when young women ask ''does my bum look big in this?'' they're hoping for a yes!

Hah - definitely!
